My missus deals with these surprisingly regularity at work: You have an at fault crash in a moderately valuable classic that's MOT exempt but has undeclared mods. The insurer sends an engineer out to inspect and determines your insurance wasn't valid because of the mods. Insurer pays out and then they come after you for all the costs. It's called 'assignment and agreement' if I remember correctly. You only need to crash once and you're suddenly poor/taking the bus.
