Y'know sometimes you wish you hadn't gone looking?

https://www.carandclassic.com/car/C1442516

If I sold both my cars, some other belongings and maybe a kidney, I could probably work out a way to stretch to this. I'd be skint, but happy skint.

I've lusted after a GT6 ever since I found out what they were. Prices are high, but a man can dream.

Can someone section me before I start putting my life on ebay?

Have you driven one? I don't like them - and not at that money but I was around these when they were just second hand cars so maybe I'm biased.

So to 'section' you here goes:

They are a 'bitsa' lash-up built by a woefully undercapialised Standard Triumph out of myriad small pressings and rust everywhere.

They creak and groan on the road like an old galleon with loads of scuttle shake.

They have a terrible claustrophobic and cramped driving  position and a cardboard transmission cover.

I'm not sure which suspension set-up this one has but they are all pretty lethal.

They are hot, noisy and not that fast.

The one for sale has a fibreglass bonnet, a failing gearbox (they were never up to much I think it came out of the Standard 10) and non-original wheels.

The Ford Escort and VW Golf came along and made this pile of old bits completely redundant.

Feel better?

I'm sure a contemporary Elan (etc, etc) would be a hundred times better car, but it just doesn't make the noise.

I know what you mean about the noise. When I was 16 my Dad had a mid-life crisis and bought an, at the time, 6 year old 1973 GT6 . Even then it wasn’t that fast but it sounded amazing. I was living in Birmingham and him in London, we both went back to mid- Wales most weekends, on a Sunday night he’d let me drive as far as Llandrindod Wells, which meant about 50 miles of B roads and the Tregaron to Abergwesyn mountain road.To a 16 year old this was like the Targa Floria or something, he’d encourage me to go faster and not be a wuss, I didn’t need much telling! Probably not the most responsible parenting .

Some weekends I’d hitch to London then go from his flat in Wembley, the journey on the M4 was hell, so unbearably noisy and uncomfortable. He’d often take whatever company car was lying around the office just so as not to have to endure that pain. It must have been bad when a Marina 1700 estate or Renault 12 was a better option and he never encouraged me to go faster in the Marina on the Sunday night, that’s for sure.

I probably wouldn’t fit in one these days , but there’d still be a place in my Euromilions garage for a white Mark 3 on steel wheels .

Currently in the South of France staying with my goadfather who has set me the task of finding him a classic to buy. Found a GT6 "light project" for sale in the town and god it was dog rough. It was a Canadian import and while it started (with a jump from the Audi 80) the interior was tatty, and the bodywork was awful, albeit not rotten. It was quite sad as it was clearly a car that had been loved once (there was an old photo of it in Canada) but had since been neglected. But I also got the impression that even though it had deteriorated, build quality when new would not have been the best. Something about Triumphs have always reminded me of kit cars when it comes to fit and finish and general quality. I can see the appeal, but if I was going for a Triumph I'd go for a 2500S (my friend has been running one as his first car aged 17/18, the cheapest running one in the UK and it was very very rough). It used to be a brand for which I cared little, but over the past few months I have really grown to appreciate them, and if I was resurrecting an old British brand today, I think Triumph would have the best chance of making something of it.

We walked from this one, and ended up with an Innocenti 1100S Spider

The Triumph straight-6 is a fantastic sounding engine.

Evidence, your Honor:

I know they're not great, but you'd forgive it everything for that, wouldn't you?

I agree, they're lovely cars but my P6 does the "70's saloon" job just as well, if not better. I really want my next classic to be more of a sports car when I decided I've had my time with the 3500.

Go get your ears sorted, and then properly listen to your Rover.  Much better than a GT6 in so many ways.

My advice to anybody is try and drive as many cars as you can and if you are after something of any make  - try driving a couple before buying - see if you like.

I was lucky enough to drive a lot of this stuff when they were just cheap old cars - and restored they are probably better - but a lot of stuff is just a bit crap. But each to his own.

The Datsun 240Z is a much better car and outsold the Triumph in it's main market in the US. They are really fun to drive.

The kit-car comment is right - Triumph had body supply problems - so the clever small-panel and chassis design of these saved tooling with outside suppliers.

I don't disagree, but where the V8's relaxed burble might be soothing, the rasping howl of a carbed straight-six at full chat really makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up...

Yeah, to be honest, I'm not sold at £16.5k and some are far more than that so I've missed the boat there. But I still would if prices had stayed sensible. Its the smallest possible body wrapped around that engine.

To be honest the one in the video above is a bit harsh, I love a Chris Witor exhaust on a 2000, that's perfect but a bit big for my garage. It would fit if the rest of the garage was empty but I've built the shelving around my 1300TC so I'll have to stick with that. Being a TC it has the Spitfire spec engine with a bespoke exhaust so it sounds about as good as any four cylinder engine ever will.

No four cylinder sounds better than a Subaru Impreza (92-05) with the right exhaust.

And yet some say it's a Fiat twin cam. This should start a whole new thread rather than clog the ebay thread but then a Triumph straight six is better than all of them so we'll leave it there.
