If it's of *that* vintage where you don't need an MoT, you could well be. And omit the welding.

While I wouldn't do it myself, I can see the appeal. Last time I made it to France for a climbing trip there was a guy near us on the campsite who had traveled from the UK in a 3 series but was sleeping in a hammock with a very rudimentary rain cover over the top. 

I can see that Panda being a far more comfortable proposition in the evenings or in the event you get rained off for a few days.

Seems nice in theory, but try anchoring that on soft ground. That overhanging bit seems to be only supported by the ladder!

Then there's the faff of climbing into a tent at ground level, imagine that faff but at the top of a ladder...

 

It seems like an answer to a question nobody asked. Why not just take a conventional tent with you?

Those roof tents do have their uses in specialist circumstances, mind. Like those ones you see on massive extended wheelbase 4x4s in the Serengeti, so you want to sleep up there so you don't get eaten by the local wildlife. Otherwise they just seem silly.

Trailing arm mounts are the weakest point.  The torsion bars tend to cling on rather longer.

That's the bit I meant (sos), and don't I know it ☹️ The nearside outer mount on my 16 parted company with the body but luckily, Dad and his welder plus the local auto factors came to the old girl's rescue.

Whichever bastard at the Régie thought it was a good idea to leave the inner sill extension to which the trailing arm bearing was attached open to the elements and act as a mud and road salt trap on all those cars deserved to be given a strict diet of nothing but andouillette without any sauces for the rest of their natural.

(and yes, I have eaten them.)

I found I needed a boatload of mustard and frites to make the damned things edible - but at least I can say I've eaten them.
