Exporting from italy seems less expensive. Still much bureaucracy to deal with for old owner. It is best if car is transported out of italy as number plates have to be removed by previous owner. I am no expert on export from italy,  it scares me too much.

Maybe from a dealer things are easier.

Apologies if you explained this before but can't the new buyer drive out of Italy and send the plates back when they get home?

Automatic Peugeot 205 for £500.  Needs recommissioning but one owner and 35K from new.

And what a part of the world to buy a car from.

I'm struggling to think of a less desirable car than a Skoda Rapid convertible. Absolutely horrid things. The sub-genre of cars designed as saloons and then turned into convertibles has definitely produced some of the worst vehicles ever built - Visa convertible, anything by Crayford, Skoda, PT Cruiser, various Astras and Escorts... I can't think of a single one I wouldn't be deeply embarrassed to drive, and I used to own a Reliant Regal van.

note  - a Skoda Rapid coupé is an absolute stonking motor and I'd love one

I had a Visa convertible. Was quite ok and properly engineered by Heuliez who produced a lot of the special bodied Citroens, particularly the estate cars.

Crayford on the other hand did not do stuff particularly well.

Buying from private individual.

The previous owner of the car has to do the paperwork to export the car, until he physically hands back both number plates he is still liable for the possession tax here. The car also has ro have a valid mot less than 6 months old.

If the previous owner was mega trusting in new foreign owner then 8n theory the plates could then be sent back to old owner. This is unlikely to ever happen as the risks to old owner a too great.

If the plates never turned up thw old owner would either have to do police report for stolen car or apply to scap the car, both of these have costs and time issues.

I believe it is possible for temporary number plates to be issued, but i can not understand how a foreign non italian resident would ever be issued with these as a non Italian resident can not buy a car here.

I will try to find out how it works as soon i will be regulary travelling back and forth italy/uk, maybe i could start import old pandas to the uk.

In summary, using a transporter would be relatively easy to export an italian car.

A question. Is it possible in uk to temporarily insure an italian number plated car owned by someone else ?

It's definitely possible to insure a foreign plated car, I have done it.  The owned by someone else is the issue I suppose.
