Nicole....? Papa....? Early Renault Clio diesel, classified ad price £250. Local registered car too (Norfolk).

natually aspirated diesel...for extra misery

A 1.9 diesel in a car that's well under a tonne actually results in very reasonable progress, it's not exactly refined but they have absolutely no trouble keeping up with traffic. They have the usual lovely French car ride and decent grip once it's rolled on its side a bit. My old one used to do well over 50mpg on my suburban London commute and I once drove (very slowly) to Ashford in Kent and back on not much more than a gallon, for 70+ MPG.

Someone GIB.

They also have a really weird intake manifold casting.

Looks like a decent car, won't take much to make it really nice.

Look at this! It's a first-year model in an appealing colour and a low-ish spec. Must be all but extinct in the UK? Sadly it's a Cat N (whatever that is) and needs a fair bit of work to sort out, but wasn't at least somebody on here breaking a Mk1 Clio recently?

I don't know why, really, but I'd love to see this thing saved. Look at those steels! And most importantly, it's a manual!

This is now up for sale for £4k. Doesn't look like he's done anything to it at all.

Incidentally the guy selling it is the same chap who was telling this lad selling a Reliant Robin that it was a Rialto.

That Clio is the exact combination of basic trim, unpopular colour, small engine, imperfect cosmetics and tarnished registration status that afflicts our 306, and which would have killed it years ago in the hands of most sane folk.

I like it very much.

I remember first seeing the Clio when we were on holiday in France when I was 13 or 14 before they were sold over here.

I was taken aback by how small they were. They seemed much smaller than the Renault 5. There were a few of them about, I remember wondering why we didn't see them in the UK, but we did the following year.

I also distinctly remember finding a lizard just after I saw my first one, picking it up and its tail coming off which scared the fucking shit out of me.

Virtual pat on the back to whichever V-dub botty fondler is thick enough to pay even half the asking price for this dreadful creation.

Dutton Melos is an anagram of 'On me tod, slut' .  Might come in handy if you bump into your ex-missus one day and she asks if you've moved on yet.

WTF. I had one of those in a fetching grey that I bought for £700 in a posh part of London around 8 years ago. It was immaculate albeit slow, thirsty and wallowy in the corners. Yet it had this alluring charm to it. Sold it to a work colleague for a little bit more than I paid after retrofitting front fogs. Pretty easy as the wiring loom is already there.

I'd be interested to see how this handles, my understanding is that if the majority of a vehicles mass is within the triangle created by the tyres contact patches then there's a good chance it won't fall over. There can't be much weight to those ally panels.

This looks like a poor replica of Postman Pat's van taken from a small seaside town's carousel. The little carousel in the shopping precinct, not the big one at the seafront.

Painting over your brake fluid reservoir not actually a bad idea on a P6.

Insurance company: "Any modifications to the vehicle?"

Owner: "No. Oh, wait, yes - I removed the glovebox and replaced it with a secondary heater which makes the car look like Dr Kevorkian tried to turn it into a euthanasia machine"

Very reasonable and honest appearing advert and quite cheap I think for what it is. If I hadn't just bought a new car I'd probably be all over this!

Don't look at its MOT history if you're wearing tight shorts in a public space.
