Aah, the only one left with paintcode 399. Am sure that's going to snap the knicker elastic of lots of young ladies.

And the handbooks have been signed by Dr Wolfgang Drizxll. Fuck knows why and what relevance that has but there we have it. She is in pristine as new condition apart from a few faults you would expect on a 17 year old car. Please send 40 bags by return post.

Still for sale. Don't all rush at once.

Means a low trim one, those recessed ones are the Lucas catalogue offering as used in allegro's / viva's / povvo Maestro's and probably some other old rammel as well.

FFS, this is the worst effort I've seen in a long time

Apologies - I don't have all the details to hand, so some things may not be accurate. This is a good little car that still runs very nicely. There is no power steering, so it's fairly hard work to drive, but it's reliable and neat. It is very like the car in the picture, which I couldn't resist putting up, just because it's funny (and quite like my car).

Year: 1992

So nothing like the car in the picture then.

Look, classic car prices have gone absolutely mental over the last 18 months.  I've heard stories about it being due to investments on the floor, pensions are worth nothing and interest rates continuing to fall but even so it's difficult to imagine a hedge fund manager advising his client to take a punt on a Hillman Minx or to have a Vauxhall Cresta in his portfolio.

Perhaps it's because of a few star performers, stuff like E Type Jags, Porsche 911s and Mk1 Escorts are now outperforming the Financial Times' best predictions and maybe they're dragging the values of other stuff with it.

Whatever the truth, old cars are now out of reach unless you spend serious coin so what else is available for reasonable money?

The owner of this XJS is looking for £3300 despite being only a six cylinder.  The paintwork looks a bit rough and let's be perfectly honest, this is from an era when Jaguar's reputation was not at their best.

Let's not worry about E Types, they're at least 10 times the price for something that will devour £30k in restoration costs.

But for the same money as that XJS you could have this XK8 with its lovely V8 and much nicer styling.  Which is more likely to get you laid?

This is the car most likely to be parked outside the local autospares shop in the '80s.  Driven by wide boys and wanted by teenage lads everywhere.  This one's up for TWELVE GRAND and it's far from the only one at that kind of price.

Newer wide boys with a penchant for oversteer choose these E36 Beemers.  This shape is a pretty car in 2 door form, has all the tail out action you could wish for and at 2 grand seems like an absolute bargain.  Plus you won't have to be welding up the strut tops next year.

What does a grand buy you in terms of classic VW Beetle these days?

How much do you fancy driving that through the winter?

Or for the same kind of money you could have one of these.  Dull, but for the same money it's a much safer bet for actually getting somewhere.

I dunno, a nice Super Minx Convertible or PA Cresta could probably go for 6-8k these days and the only way is up...
