Invacar MK12 - I has V5!

aye it updated sometime this evening as late afternoon I checked on it and it was not taxed then

(did so after I had a quick and dirty look for any Mk12's after the last known Mk12 block (which is PEV401K-PEV500K) I didn't find anything but im not surprised as theres a just under month gap between the end of the last Mk12 block and the first Invacar Model 70 block (PPU521K-PPU600K), which makes sense as I imagine it would of taken them about a month to get the Model 70 production line up and running after ending Mk12 production, I did go up in steps of 100 so there is a chance there could be a smaller then 100 cars block of Mk12's hiding in there but I dont think so)

Hagerty have confirmed @Six-cylinder was correct that the car won't show as insured on the Motor Insurance Database, as if you have laid up insurance, the SORN should be a given of course.

So anyway, tried to SORN again on the same 11 number code, which was fine but...

Hagerty man said the MID isn't that fast, so I'll just try again to SORN in a few days, or give my old mates in Swansea a call again.

I could fill in a V890 SORN postal form for a belt and braces approach, 'tax is in the post guv'nor'

id just wait a few days then SORN it again as you say

id also not be surprised if it SORNs it self from your previous SORN attempt like what happened with TPA

as always Ill keep my eyes on it :)

in celebration of getting the V5 in hand etc, here's one for the list :) 

PWC801, the oldest known surviving Invacar Mk12 :) (complete with engine size shenanigans like yours LOL)

rather curiously its chassis number is 81617 apparently which puts it right next to 81618 XGX224, what are the chances of that :) (and rather amusingly PWC801 is owned by ian hellings in the US LOL)

(for some reason the plate PWC801 looks awfully familiar like I have seen it before but I cant quite figure out where)

so just for giggles I put your Mk12 into the website I use to check previous owner count and current keeper acquisition dates

and rather amusingly for some reason it thinks its had 4 previous keepers and that you got it on 1st of the November 2006!

(i checked with another site and that also says 4 previous keepers)

(side note I checked some early Model 70's through it and they also say "NOT KN0WN" for the engine number so it looks like your Mk12 is not alone there after all, but most other Model 70s wheres no engine no just have that field blank)

Thanks - it's a 'data quality' nightmare. As I'm in the auditing trade, DVLA would be getting bad marks for their data accuracy :-).

Oh, No news on the tax class change - every day I start the 'tax a car' process - if it still works on the old V5 11 digit number (and says disabled tax) then I know they haven't re-issued it let..

I better go over to the lock up and check its still there to be honest, it's been weeks again...

I found out today you can do online chat with the DVLA, you can even save the transcript - though that didn't work for me, and it just saved a blank text document.

Anyway, I spoke to Michael, because

Well, I hadn't had any news about my tax class change from 1 October. Michael could see that I had been to the post office (I guess when they scanned the V5) but they hadn't actioned the change, so he 'raised a case' and I should hear in 2-4 weeks. IIRC @Zelandeth had the DVLA eat his V5 as well when he changed the tax class to historic, but im not sure how long it took for him to get it back tho

but the main thing is you have the car in your name etc, so you can Tax it again and go for a drive without anyone giving you any funny looks if you wish!

(I believe the DVLA says you can use a vehicle while its undergoing a change etc)

tho obviously a vehicle has to be road legal etc!

(well I imagine you will still get funny looks because Invacar :) but not funny looks from the police wondering why its not in your name!)

 

it will be interesting to see how things go when I finally do it with REV!

(its interesting to note that the previous owner of REV was not disabled, but he never changed the tax class or seemingly had to, mind Im not actually sure if REV was ever used on the road in his ownership!)

 

 

BTW although thankfully no longer relevant :) I figured this is worth posting just as some retroactive reassurance that no matter what happened we would of been able to get your Mk12 road registried somehow! 

in that here is a Mk12, that was re-registered under an Age related plate with a dating letter from the ICR etc, without knowing what its original reg was etc

(this was one of the last ones stuart did before he "called it quits", and only because it got dragged out over a couple years, hence why its October 2018, even tho stuart officially called it quits in 2017 sometime IIRC? it was sadly done before we discovered the whole Essex records and V62 thing hence why it is on an age related plate and not its original plate)

I dont know exactly sadly, I know back when it was registried it was described as a "rough old dog" but I don't know how it stands today

however I speculate it would of been done before the Mk12 was recommissioned 

for the same reasons you wanted to get XWC registered before commencing restoration/recommissioning work

(in that you wanted to make sure you could actually register it in your name/drive it on the road, before putting in a load of work right?)

Isn’t there some facility at DVLA where (if you have all the relevant evidence) you can surrender an age related mark, if the original mark isn’t assigned to another vehicle, and get that original mark back? Or alternatively transfer the age related mark to another vehicle, assuming it’s not got the “non-transferable” restriction on it, and get the original reinstated that way. I’m sure if someone went to the trouble of going through local office records to marry up chassis number and reg mark, they’d be sympathetic to reissuing the original mark if available.

aye yeah thats called a V765, plus a V55/4 if your also registering the vehicle rather then just claiming its registration number

what you did was different, you did a V62,  which was "Just" applying for a V5c

however as XWC468F did not show up on the DVLA checker online most people thought the DVLA had no records of it still, so people thought you would have to V765 and V55/4

but luckily that was not the case!

 

as far as the DVLA is concerned you never "claimed" XWC468F for your vehicle, they just dug up the records for XWC468F stuck it back on the computer, and then sent you the V5 for whatever XWC468F was attached to!

its just your V62 was a little bit more complicated then most!

Aye - what I was banging on about is something that’s live, on the road but lost original reg somehow. I know someone with an old bus that had a “cherished” mark put on it at a few months old, then transferred off some years later and the original mark wasn’t reinstated - the local office issued a fresh mark on the same year letter, which I think was standard practice back in the early 90s. He’s now keen to get the original back, once he finishes restoring it.

assuming the original registration has not been issued/transferred to something else

if it has then I guess you need to sweet talk whoever has that reg in giving it back to the vehicle it belongs to!

Don't think the V5 vanished on the tax type change, the first V62 vanished into the aether though.

They did randomly just decide my Xantia was untaxed though, despite my having not touched anything nor them having stopped taking the direct debit payments...first I knew was when I got the angry Untaxed Vehicle letter from them...

I just recall asking you in person about if the body type changed or not (since I saw that the engine capacity changed but the wheel plan etc never got updated, so I was curious if the body type changed since I know at first you did try and change it to Tricycle) , and I remember you saying something along the lines of chasing up the DVLA to get the V5 back

but perhaps I miss heard,

(thankfully soon after that I discovered some online tools that told me the body type, which thankfully is still invalid vehicle for TPA, so in this case DVLA shenanigans actually did some good! LOL)

Woo glad to see things are moving!

its interesting to note that when the guy with 4 Model 70's called the DVLA about getting their V5's

the guy on the other end said for the tax class on the V62 to put down "historic" for the tax class in the V62 application form

which seems to indicate that you can change the tax class with the V62?

would be interesting to try and see what happens!

if it does work, it would streamline things a bit and reduce the risk of things getting lost in the post!

Ah I didn't. I did it at the post office a few weeks back, there have been delays which I followed up 10-11 days ago with the DVLA.  That follow-up seems to have led to action.

When I 'normally' try and tax this vehicle it comes up with tax class disabled (using the 11 digit V5 and registration number) - now it comes up as historic.

ohh yay! :) did the 11 digit V5 number thingy change or did that stay the same?

now once ya decide which engine your using/get running

you can fill in the engine number and correct the wheel plan/engine capacity

and send it off once again! LOL

interesting to see that indeed it is Historic vehicle rather than just "historic" 

(BTW does it really say 1 previous keeper? because my comercial HPI tool says 1 total keeper, which would indicate no previous keepers, also says 1 V5, although I dont know if a taxation class change counts towards the V5 count or not!)

Brilliant news. Although it’s taken a while, glad the “hunt through the local archives” suggestion has led you to this stage. Just need some fuel in the tank and you can pop down the shops in it!

Well thanks for everyone who has helped get things this far.  I hoped to be at this stage in the spring! (32 page thread!)

Defo one former keeper, and a new V5 number.

If nothing else, I hope that this has at least ensured the future of the 38th known remaining MK12. But many challenges ahead before I get to cruise around Whitstable and Herne Bay (at least both towns are relatively flat!).

      Well I've been meaning to sign up here in forever, but kept forgetting. Thanks to someone over on another forum I frequent poking me about it recently the subject was forced back into my very brief attention span for long enough to get me to act on the instruction.

      I figure that my little varied fleet might bring you lot some amusement...

      So...we've got:

      1993 Lada Riva 1.5E Estate (now fuel injected, as I reckon the later cars should have been from the factory...).
      1989 Saab 900i Automatic.
      1987 Skoda 120LX 21st Anniversary Special Edition.
      1985 Sinclair C5.
      2009 Peugeot 107 Verve.

      Now getting the photos together has taken me far longer than I'd expected...so you're gonna get a couple of photos of each car for now, and I'll come back with some more information tomorrow when I've got a bit more time...

      Firstly...The Lada. Before anyone asks - in response to the single question I get asked about this car: No, it is not for sale. Took me 13 years and my father's inheritance to find the thing.


      Yes, it's got the usual rusty wings...Hoping that will be resolved in the next couple of months.

       






      Next, a proper old Saab. One of the very last 8 valve cars apparently, and all the better for it. I've driven two 16v autos and they were horrible - the auto box works sooooo much better with the torque curve of the 8 valve engine. Just wish it had an overdrive for motorway cruising...









      Next up a *real* Skoda...back when they put the engine where it belongs, right out the back. In the best possible colour of course...eye-searingly bright orange.







      Seat covers have been added since that photo was taken as it suffers from the usual rotting seat cloth problem that affects virtually all Estelles.

      Then we have possibly the world's scruffiest Sinclair C5...



      Realised when looking for this that I really need to get some more photos of the thing...I use it often enough after all! We have a dog who's half husky, so this is a really good way of getting him some exercise.

      Finally - again, I really need to take more photos of - we have the little Pug 107.



      Included for the sake of variety even if it's a bit mainstream! First (and probably to be the only) new car I've bought, and has been a cracking little motor and has asked for very little in return for putting up with nearly three years of Oxford-Milton Keynes commuter traffic, before finally escaping that fate when my housemate moved to a new job. Now it doesn't do many miles and is my default car for "when I've managed to break everything else."

      I'll fill in some more details tomorrow - I warn you though that I do tend to ramble...

      A Range Rover P38, which is turning out to be really rather good.
       
      And to mix things up even more I'm off on a collection caper today. Had first refusal on it and was expecting it to come around in a year, but things soon changed and no way was I going to pass up on it. It may well render the second Xantia redundant as I've got a really good feeling about this motor.
       
      In the meantime here are some snaps of the Range Rover. As usual it was a car I said I would probably never buy due to their reliability*. I have said the same of Jag XJR, XJS, XK8 and I have had all of those now. Basically the moment I declare buying a particular car is impractical or improbable, I end up buying one.
       
      Things to note on the P38. It's a nice colour with tidy body. The EAS has been removed. It runs and drives lovely and it doesn't have enough electrical problems to hinder progress. The main one is the driver's side window not working, but that should be fixable. I've tried changing the outstation, that didn't fix it. Might be wiring under the seat. Other than that I bought it and took it for an MOT the very next day, and it passed. Since then it had what seemed like a battery drain, but since unplugging the RF thingy for the remote locking and putting on a proper lead-acid battery, which the car can actually charge, unlike the modern lead-calcium batteries, it has been perfect. I will treat it to a full service soon.

      Then there's me, who after hitting the armagedden button when the 406 threw me a load of urgent work that I didn't have the time or money to perform by it's MOT obtained yet another french car!

      Current status? Well our very own Bramz7 is somewhere in the north of england (maybe even nearly scotland) delivering a car. At almost possibly maybe 4.30/5pm he will arrive in Derby and collect Bub's ZX. Following a very silent drive to my house in Oxfordshire as the ZX has no radio we shall convey ourselves to his house, and I shall drive home...

      Hi all, new to the forum.  Thought you might be interested in what I've got myself into
      I'd been after my first classic car for a while.  If it's big and made in the 70s I'm interested.  Looked at few things like P6s, Zodiacs, Victors, SD1s and various other things.  Problem was I didn't want to spend a boatload of money on something that looked alright but underneath was actually a total heap.  The solution was to buy a complete heap in the first place and spend the money fixing it.
      So in January I went ahead and bought this from a colleague at work who was moving away and needed to get shot of it.

      It's a part finished restoration (I prefer not started) and it needs a whole load of help if it's going to stand any chance of using a road again.
      Pros
      It's right up my street.  Granada Coupes are quite odd and certainly stand out from the norm.
      It still has the original engine, box, interior and most trim.
      It came with loads of panels I need to repair it (mostly original Ford stock).
      It came with so many spares I could probably build a few Granadas and still have stuff left over.
      It was cheap.
      Cons
      Most of the front end has been cut off.
      Most of the body structure is quite rotten.
      It's going to take me ages.
      I work at a restoration company and my boss kindly allows me to keep the car there.  So I've got access to all the gear I need to restore it.  I've been busy on the car for a while now so will post more pics over the coming days.
