I run it up to temperature every other week though and drive it round the farm. I dread stuff slipping into the Broken category as it always seems to highlight all the other faults that I have been ignoring and becomes in danger of being a Project. The better halfs avensis is not being used due to her illness and me unable to drive it in traffic as it hurts my leg. The trike is legal but too bloody cold. I'm running at 100% do I win a prize?! It smokes up therear wheels easy enough in the dry!It weighs about as much as a supertanker too.I bet you’d be surprised how well it does. Tall thin tyres and lots of weight. I over took my brother in his 320d when the estate was fully snowfucked. The nasty little 1.6 Pug diesel uses some fancy fluid in a little tank that can only be accessed under the car and nobody ever refills. When it runs dry, which this one did about 35,000 miles ago, it would seem, the dpf clogs up with ash. This can only be removed by a specialist company , allegedly.I am investigating some sort of bodge, savagery involving 'gutting' etc...Sounds like they are selling you horse feathers.If the Eolys fluid runs out the dpf will totally choke with soot long before 35000 miles have been covered as regeneration wouldn't take place.If they had the dpf out to clean it,why wouldn't they clean the ash out at the same time? twosmoke300 and myglaren 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I usually have 3 everyday cars but this winter I was down to 2, the L200 and the ever faithful Saab 9-3 but I had the Disco fully fixed and awaiting an MOT retest. The starter on the L200 has been getting worse and needs removing before a replacement can be ordered, and at the start of the week decided I was running my luck and took it off the road. Down to 1.5 Wednesday I hit a huge lump of ice that had just fallen off a wagon with the Saab, destroying the front, so coupled with its other problems, that came off the road. Down to 0.5. So yesterday, MOT retest on the Disco, drove up, passed test (briefly up to 1) then the fuel pump packed up on the way home. 0. The duster is chugging like a bastard when cold, it needs new glow plugs and the local garage can't fit it in until mid February. (Still under a warranty) I'll get the mot done at the same time, then sell a kidney or two to get the cambelt changed. The wife's Tivoli just keeps going, even with her "spirited" approach to driving... Saying that, it's probably what's keeping the dpf clear! Does value actually correlate to reliability? I am now down to 3 cars, and only 1 is road legal but not functioning 100% as it should. It's doing my tits in coz it's a nice car but it won't behave and I can't decide whether it's worth flinging more money at it. The Granvia is finally getting fixed for MOT and even it gave me panic attacks today because the oil leak, which we thought was a sump gasket is actually a cracked oil return pipe off the sodding turbo! Could have easily killed the engine of it had gone completely so this needs fixed properly. Cue a load of fannying about trying to find the VIN in my paperwork to find the right part number, coz import, and then needing to remortgage to afford a 10cm section of stainless steel pipe..... Fortunately managed to get one for £20 as it shares an engine with the UK Landcruiser. Big relief all round, but it's going to need a full set of shocks shortly too, mainly due to mileage but I want it right for the tow bar going on.... I've already spent the most on this car but I've kinda stopped counting now. We've been all over the UK in the last couple of years so I feel like it's reliable enough to keep going. Altho I would quite like an Elgrand....But really can't be arsed trying to find as decent an example as I have in the Granvia. The trick is to buy a car that is only fashionable with minted giffers, who care. most reliable cars I've ever owned are mk4 astras. Son has a Low miles 2 owner 1.6 16V Club W reg. Came from his Grandad with 19K - now has 60K. I had a 1.6 16V sport (most uncomfortable car ever). 33K took it to 50K in a year. 2 Problems. One - a leaking fuel filter - the original had gone rusty. and two- the coil Pack on Cylinder 3. So no FTP. Sold because Omega. Only reason it works is I keep spending money on it. All the issues have been related to previous owners not throwing money at it. Although they did. Just not the things that I threw money at. Only two fails to proceed in 3 years. one was a servicing error. one a worn out radiator. and I could have nursed it home I reckon, but not brave enough. I have added a litre of oil (once I got here, forgot to check it before leaving) and added some air to the tyres (ditto). The airbag light comes on occasionally but goes off again shortly after (this is a design feature to show the bulb still works) and the EML has come on (to remind the driver it does have an engine, there is almost no other way to tell). Lacquer Peel Posted April 30, 2019 Share Posted April 30, 2019 I bought a £700 Passat TDI off Jim Bell nearly a year ago, it's been totally reliable and has just needed wear and tear parts.It's not the most exciting car to drive or to look at but it's a reliable engine attached to a rugged platform (ignoring the 8 ball joints in the front suspension).
