What works?

Just phoned my mechanic to check which of my running but non-legal cars is closest to being MOT'd to replace the legal but wonky GTB. He says his wife took their Corsa to work this morning and he had to rescue her in his Clio because the radiator froze and the Corsa overheated. He now has no daily drive today because out of the 7 Clios he currently owns, only 1 of them both works and is road legal.....And I thought I was bad!

How many of us are in a similar position? lol

On Monday I had the grand total of 1 working legal car in the household.

Passat - FAB

ML- no MOT

Fiat 500- no MOT

C30- back in limp mode after £463 service and dpf clean. Needs ash removing - another £250!!!

E46 330d- auto box not changing down- ever!!!

E30- needs wheelbearing and MOT.

CLK- needs MOT and paint .

Since then the ML and 500 have been MOT'' d . Just need to sort C30 and get rid of 330d and buy something to keep daughter no1 mobile till I get e30 recommisined.

Simples!

3 out of 4 for me, Volvo, Mercury and Transit all road legal, working perfectly and ready to go if needed. The 4th car being the Capri which is still largely in bits waiting to be finished in spring once the better weather arrives. Then it’s good to go for another 40+ years!

It’ll take a major catastrophe (I’m talking life or death and even then I’ll have to think carefully!) for me to take anything other than the Volvo out on salted roads though. And the Volvo WILL be fully washed and valeted top and bottom after such use!

I am running all 3 cars on the road at the moment, 2000 Punto as daily, 2001 Sharan family car and 2005 corsa with a clicking driveshaft though they all have small jobs to be done on them but nothing critical/unroadworthy.

Motorbikes though.... sons Gilera Dna moped is good but my DNA 50 is in bits with mot and tax on it next to its big brother 180 that I am rebuilding.

My motivation is currently outside temperature/weather dependant

The Vel Satis is somewhere up North with the fair wife

The Scirocco took me to Loughborough & back this morning

The Jaguar is parked four doors up the road and was fine on Sunday

The Porsche is SORN'd, under the car port and all good

The T2 is SORN'd, under the van port and... And the MOT ran out yesterday.

The 1303 is in the garage, SORN'd and was running fine when I backed it in there about six years ago.

Winter fleet all present & correct!

50% for me, only two vehicles at the moment, Freelander fine except for a stuck handbrake shoe pivot (TADTS)

P100 still out of commission with knackered head gasket after disgracing itself on way back from MOT, can't bring myself to try and sort it at the minute, can't sell it knackered, ah well, spring is coming, then it can have some attention!

I currently have 4 cars SORN with valid MOT, and a couple that have lapsed MOT, but should* pass another.

I have 2 legal and running, w203 and e36. That will be 3 when I tax the Cherokee, and fix the brakes, hopefully tomorrow ;)

I feel uncomfortable if I have less than 3 cars available/on the road.

What did the dpf clean consist of if it now needs the ash clearing out?

Funnily enough, my mercury is fit for service too. I’d just have to tax it first. Same with the manta (for now). And the mercury is surprisingly capable in the omgsnowchaos!

I’ve never used mine in snow tbh. I’m not terribly sure a 7.0 V8 auto with rear drive is a good combo in snow and ice! It smokes up therear wheels easy enough in the dry!

It weighs about as much as a supertanker too.

The dpf clean only gets the soot out apparentlly. The nasty little 1.6 Pug diesel uses some fancy fluid in a little tank that can only be accessed under the car and nobody ever refills. When it runs dry, which this one did about 35,000 miles ago, it would seem, the dpf clogs up with ash. This can only be removed by a specialist company , allegedly.

I am investigating some sort of bodge, savagery involving 'gutting' etc...

But am I the only one thinking what kind of mechanic leaves water in cooling system this time of year? No sympathy I’m afraid

There was coolant in it but obviously not enough for the current temperature. Gotta have some sympathy tho - he was taking his Espace to be MOT'd and a wheel bearing started rumbling on the way there!

That's allowed, project cars excepted ;)

2 is the magic number for me. Always worried about having to do an emergency vet run so need to have a Plan B at all times. Do have access to another car atm, just not mine.

I’ve got 1.5 working landrovers currently.

That's the usual amount of working landrovers isn't it

I agree there, but then the thought is it worth spending the price of a bottle of antifreeze because all vauxhalls are shit m8

At the mo I'm 2 legal cars working, 2 cars with no m.o.t working 1 of which is in the body shop, and the 2 garden ornaments 1 of which the welding should be finished on as soon as the weather perks up not been able to touch it for 3 months now or it would be done
