10yr challenge

2009 started with the Lupo, which I sold and bought a mini, which shat the engine on the way home. Fixed it up, sold it and then buggered about with a perfectly good 106XSi putting a Saxo VTS engine in, Carlos fandango super wide wheels and some fibreglass wheelarch extensions:

2019:

Nowadays I'm fed up with cars and just seem to drive vans. Keeps me from driving everywhere at warp factor 11 like I used to.

My drive, 2009

post-5525-0-57459800-1547927821_thumb.png

The scirocco was rather heavily modified and put out about 200bhp, I bought it ready-done from a local VW specialist. The Suzuki Swift was a cracking car, having gone round the clocks almost twice it was rock solid. The Scirocco is with one of trigger's friends now, having developed a deeply worrying oil pressure problem and had a replacement engine put in, among other things.

and the ex-Vantman Saab 9-3 that i can't find any pictures of.

Some interesting stuff here - certainly nicer than the craze of the same name that's sweeping* Facebook.

I'm hugely impressed by those who still have the same vehicles: especially if they're still in running order (hello Mat and Mercrocker).

I was genuinely struggling to remember which car I had in January 2009 but I was pretty sure it was my blue BX estate, which was much in my thoughts today because I drove Aldo135's Xantia along the route that formed my commute when I had it.  Driving a hydraulic Citroen along that route pressed one or two nostalgia buttons, I'm not ashamed to say.  The BX estate is genuinely the old car of mine that I miss the most: if you could buy a modern BX, with air-con and modern soundz, I would.  In fact, I'm pretty sure it's the reason I like my W203 estate so much.  I say all the same things about it: it's the right size, it rides well, it's relaxed, you can see out and the ergonomics are good.  If the W203 had LHM it would be about perfect in my book.

Anyway, looking back at old photos I was right: it was the BX.  Here it is, having successfully got me to work in February 2009:

post-24362-0-48330700-1547927503_thumb.jpg

And now, the closest car I could imagine to replace it in 2019.  I paid a fair bit more for this one, mind you.

post-24362-0-44372500-1547927649_thumb.jpg

The BX was 19 years old in 2009: the W203 is 12 years old in 2019.  They have a similar mileage: I remember that the BX died with 125k on the clock and the W203 currently shows 97k.  Both have diesel engines, 1.8 compared to 2.2 but the BX was a fair bit thriftier: I don't think I ever got less than 45mpg, whereas the Merc is hitting closer to 35.  I used to use a spreadsheet on the BX but have a mobile phone app now, which broadly agrees with the built-in computer (that the BX obviously didn't have).  Other than that, the spec isn't much different: my Merc has air-con with climate control, cruise control and an alarm but not much else differs - you could have had parking sensors, voice activation and God knows what else on a W203 but the first owner of mine did not.  I'm guessing giffer: comfort spec, bigger diesel engine and no toys.  That's absolutely fine by me: I've added an Android Auto head unit and it doesn't need anything else.

Of course let's not forget what's been lurking in my Mum's garage all that time...

Pretty sure 2009 was the year I killed this....

post-21170-0-90787200-1547917573_thumb.jpg

....towing this....

post-21170-0-34650400-1547918046_thumb.jpg

...back from Plymouth to Glasgow. The Mondeo was a 2ltr LX which was the very first car I bought for myself and the gear box bearings started making an almightly racket whilst in Plymouth, so when I got home, it was replaced with -

post-21170-0-66009500-1547918267_thumb.jpg

My very first Legacy GT - Larry the Lemon! I was trying to find something that would match the Mondeo's 35mpg but slightly quicker, big enough to tow a caravan but still handled well when unhitched, and a good amount of interior space for the dog and assorted small furries. Thoughts of MPG quickly went out the window when I discovered one could buy a 260bhp AWD estate with a 0-60 time of 5.6 seconds for less than a grand....even if it was a bit rusty and had been utterly bastardised by previous owners. It has a massive loud exhaust which I would buy back if I could find it but the fuelling had been messed with so it spat flames and would never pass an MOT. The very first time I tried, I was told it needed over 12 hours of work on that plus all new rear suspension, an engine cradle was half rotten and I forget what else it needed but too much for DIY.

It did start my Subaru /Jap love affair as 2019 I now have these -

My white GTB was meant to be a stop-gap, bought in 2016 after I sold my other GT-V (the blue one in front) due to some weird cooling issues but it's been such a dependable car that it's still here. Now has some vaccuum issues so who knows for how much longer...

post-21170-0-48398300-1547921547_thumb.jpg

Finally bought myself a day van in 2017 after several years of trying to find one that A. I could afford and B. Ticked all required boxes - still Jap, still AWD, still high powered. Toyota Granvia with the same 3 ltr diesel engine as used in Hilux. Mechanic actually loves it coz it's so quick for a van but I HATE the body roll. Elgrand next, when I can afford it, but I've been on more trips this year in Bash than I have been in the 3 years I've owned my current caravan. Such a handy, versatile piece of kit. Will be getting some much-needed body work this year now we know it's mechanically dependable and I can't afford an Elgrand this year ;)

post-21170-0-68701000-1547925132_thumb.jpg

The latest arrival was last week - 3.0 petrol Legacy estate. Quite a nice thing despite being base spec, still plenty toys and the newest car I've ever owned! Should be returning from the mechanic in a couple of weeks so I can get to know it :)

post-21170-0-78845900-1547929124_thumb.jpg

My baby, my long-termer, Subaru Legacy GT-V, the one I'll never sell and can guarantee I will still have in another 10 years. The Fury.

Oh and the caravan now looks like this ;)

You say obviously, but...

attachicon.giftrip computer.jpg

You still had the blue BX in November 2010, as I remember tinkering with it when I came down to watch Show of Hands!

And I didn't realise you still had the Rover!

Ooh, is that from a Digit? It shows how forward-thinking Citroën used to be, they didn't become common until years later - and on much more expensive cars, at that.

NJGLeeds has agreed to buy the Rover but his collection vehicles are giving him issues. I've finally realised that I'm never going to be able to sort it myself.

It was fun to see you for that Show of Hands gig: join us at a festival one year!

That’s progress I guess... I wonder what the next decade shall bring?

That's a cracking first car and I'm enjoying your thread in the modern section. You should give it a little pat every time you see us old buffers getting misty eyed over a 205 or a Visa.

In 2009 I had this,

post-3771-0-63079300-1547933808_thumb.jpeg

And this,

post-3771-0-73093400-1547933857_thumb.jpeg

And this,

post-3771-0-12952100-1547933888_thumb.jpeg

And a V reg smiley Transit 190 2.5Di which I’ve lost the photo of.

And now in 2019 I have,

This,

post-3771-0-50102300-1547933991_thumb.jpeg

This replaced the smiley Transit in 2011.

And this,

post-3771-0-62427300-1547934074_thumb.jpeg

I sold the gold Volvo 740 above so I could have this. I love the Mercury but losing my beloved Volvo was a bitter pill to swallow!

And this,

post-3771-0-77863300-1547934223_thumb.jpeg

Couldn’t live without a 740 I’m afraid so this came up and in a roundabout way replaced the Granada.

And finally this is still here!

post-3771-0-68584000-1547934331_thumb.jpeg

The bronze Capri became the blue Capri, just with significantly less rust and filler and significantly more metal!

Hard to believe I’ve had this car almost 18 years now!

I think looking at this, it’s fair to say I don’t stray far from what I know and like!!

2019

Bought this in 2018. for £100 had 9 months mot with only 16 advisories, had a flat tyre and a flat battery, sorted them then drove it for 9 months, put t in for an mot in december and it passed on the second go with only 1 advisory most reliable car ive ever owned and only just clocked over 67000 last week. Was going to scrap it when the mot run out but i actually really like the thing now!.that much ive made it less pink, although ive not checked the oil or coolant ever.

The number of cars has grown from 3 to 6. Two of the current six were with me in 2009; the 323i and the 320i. The latter had been bought for £70 two years before.

The third car ten years ago was a 2008 Punto Tjet. A wee rocket. That was swapped in early 2010 for a 116d. That one drowned in France in 2010 at 6 months old and replaced with the one I still have.

2009: 2 cars

The 5 with a dodgy 90s grill...post-27066-0-00297200-1547975858_thumb.jpeg

And a GTV. Possibly the nicest car I’ve ever owned but not a sensible daily user.

post-27066-0-27860400-1547975913_thumb.jpeg

2019: 3 cars (or 4 with partners Nissan Nanny wagon)

The 5 is still going, proper grill now found and fitted and correct hubcaps eventually found on French eBay.

Plus two Tipos...

The Focus replaced the Fiesta in October 2018, sadly the Fiesta wasn't going to pass its yearly inspection without many coins being spent, I saw the estate advertised on Autotrader for £490 and bought it that night, 3 months and about 3300 miles later it's been fine. Best car I've owned.

The Panda was sold July 2009

Doubt I'll ever own another Cortina, due to Ford tax and OMGRUST. Good looking motor, though.

(Phase 1 Laguna behind is nowt to do with me, btw; I wouldn't have given one a second glance back then)

On a romantic assignment with the future MrsDC; this park was handily equidistant from our respective residences at the time. Yaris hadn't even had its first MOT at this point.

Mine was the blue one of this pair, the grey one belonged to my late friend Dave.  We often had similar cars...

April 2009 saw us moving to Cyprus, which meant a clean restart!

And now we're back over here, and I have...

The 205 was its Freecycle sourced temporary replacement which was far more reliable so stayed longer.  It is seen here with my work pickup just creeping into shot.

The camper hit the road in 2009 after 18 months welding and fettling and was mechanically quite good although the cosmetics were a little poor.
