Discovery 300tdi, 8 days MOT left £300?

As title says, 300tdi Disco. Just been used for house moving duties towing stuff (other shite mostly). Now in new house with too many cars so has to go. 

 

I was planning on selling it to the local Land Rover breaker but, if anyone on here wants it for £300ish then I'd rather do that. 

 

I'm at work at the moment so will add pics tomorrow. 

 

It's on around 240k, I've owned it for six months or so and it has been totally reliable. I did the head gasket at 223k when I first bought it as it was just starting to burn through on cylinder 4. 

 

Reg is S46 NGC but from memory MOT history tells you nothing!

 

It needs the usual welding to the rear of chassis and the boot floor is just starting to go although not badly. The steering box weeps, it needs rear calipers but there is a new pair included if it sells on here. It has had various bits of welding before I got it, none of which are particularly impressive - just mot bare minimum stuff really. 

 

It's a nice old bus and I was planning to weld it up and keep it. Unfortunately I have been told that there are already too many vehicular projects on the go (Transit, Phoenix, two minis, Berlingo etc) so this one gets the chop. .

 

It would need to be collected by next Thursday as it has to live on the public highway, I have it insured until then and I'll be cancelling the tax sometime after that. 

 

I appreciate that this is a crap ad for a vehicle with next to no MOT but here goes. 

 

Oh, by the way, I would possibly swap it for interesting mini related stuff (proper A series minis).

Can your pictures include this please. I need another discovery like I need a hole in the head, but this is very tempting.

Also.. should this fail to sell here on AS, I would guess with a well-worded advert it would make north of £500 on the bay of snot. I sold a 300tdi a few years back with no MOT for £600.

Took a couple of rubbish pictures today, it was pissing down as usual.

 

Chassis isn't as bad as I remembered, worst bits are the nearside as pictured.

 

Boot floor could be patched up in the short term.

 

Offside rear arch is the weakest.

That actually looks quite tidy, less corrosion than the one I had. I think you may be selling it a little on the cheap side, but if you just need it gone...

tis a bit of a bargain this; the weeping steering box can be fixed with 'neuretane' (or something) seals (white in colour) from a local engineering company- cheap; I did this with mine, and the box I bought off a scrapper which was also a leaker...

 

I think the boot floor repair panels 'complete' are cheap enough also.

 

...I sold mine with no test for €650 and Lazy rear brakes, but I did weld up its rear chassis n X-member; bloke that bought mine was a groundworker, n was intending on using it to move a 1.5tonne trailer with an excavator on it; his old 96 Tdi 'met its maker' when its rusty chassis split in two while towing!!...

For 300 quid I’d buy it tomorrow. But it would cost me that in fuel to get it home again.

300tdi will do high-30s mpg, possibly even just about maybe touch 40 if you accelerate gently and limit your top speed to about 55-60mph. Driven like the big, heavy, blunt Land-Rover that it is (and not like a normal car) they are nowhere near as thirsty as some people seem to be able to make them be. I *averaged* 36mpg when I had mine, and that had the A/C running most of the time.

...mine did 43MPG when I first bought it, I calculated, but it was hugely lethargic, n somewhat dangerous; it was mega lazy eg; pulling out of T junctions; my suspicions were the previous owner turned down the fuel screw on the pump for 'mingebaggery' reasons....

 

... I did some pump mods (as recommended/link to 'how to' threads on here); never averaged below 36mpg; even when towing heavy trailers   - the buyer on the test drive remarked on how 'liveley' it was, but I didn't go mad with the pump mods; a few turns of the star wheel n fuel screw ...

 

...the disco1's are a rare sight here over (bar the ones that are on 'vintage plates' -n allegedly on old rangerover chassis for 'cheap road tax)...

The ones that originate with the guy in Co. Tipp are genuine (there's a disco 2 and a 110 crew cab around here complete with build photos, one paid 9k for the td5, the 110 paid 11k)

 

There is some shocking ones though and ringing kits are regularly on Donedeal for 1k ish. But a genuine one is good value and they are well built from him

Only, the disco 3 I have would do 28 getting down there, and around 18 on the way back with it on a trailer haha

I live in South Co.Tipp, and there is a good few 'old reg' one knocking about here; Im not sure what some of these folk do for insurance but I spose they are on a classic policy...

 

theres a few doing it alright; a chap in Waterford has been doing it years, and was, I was told, locked up for a spell over the ringing/stolen gear in his yard/ n not paying his taxes (lol) - when he got out n he continued where he left off but now buys the chassis etc with V5's from UK, n they end up on ZV plates; he now accounts for n documents every nut, bolt n washer in his yard, all chassis's n body's have paperwork - as the customs inspectors now do bi-monthly 'spot check inspections' of his operation...

 

Theres another place doing it on the outskirts of limerick; a mate of mine who has a classic car resto business regularly runs into them at the 'blasters' - they allegedly do a 'good job' n the 'new/old disco's are essentially ground up rebuilds...

      I really need to unload some of the cars.
       
      Doesn't matter how much I try and justify it to myself, I've just got way too many at the moment.
       
      This is a large problem that became very apparent when I started looking at moving workshop to somewhere larger to consolidate where I keep my stuff and hopefully make some headroom.  The realisation struck me that I've got enough work to keep me going until retirement, and it's simply not worth it.  I need to cut some stuff out and make a clean break I think.
       
      Current list.
       
      1972 Beetle 1200 restoration (keeping and finishing, it's Sarah's car so probably doesn't count, to be fair I've done a fair bit on this)
       
      2000 beetle 2.0 (Sarah's car, needs a battery and some welding doing, but given she's not driving it's fine, and it can be quickly made into a car again.  I really need to keep this one too.
       
      1984 Caravelle restoration (keeping and finishing, had this forever and can't part with it.)
       
      1974 Subaru Beetle (can't really sell this one, made a promise on it and need to see it through)
       
      2006 Mondeo ST 2.2 Diesel (I'm keeping this, as it's my daily driver)
       
      So that brings us to the stuff I really need to get rid of.
       
      2002 Mondeo ST220 in Infra Red (I bought this because nothing appreciates like a fast ford, it's a project but an easy one, and I've not touched it for three years now.  It's in a dry garage, this can be for sale.  I keep missing the guy with the garage access to get the pictures done
       
      Here's one from just before it went into storage.  I can't imagine being that it's sat in a dry garage it looks a lot worse.  Battery will be shot, needs a window reg, they're about £20, I might have one.  It had a bit of a sump weep and needed discs and pads, and probably tyres too.  I don't remember seeing any rot in there, but it may have started to go a bit by the front wings.

      1999 Golf S 1.9 TD estate.  That's the one that was meant to go last week.  All working now, just needs me to put some coolant in it and get a battery, the chap was meant to bring one, then let me down, MOT'd till March 29th.  Might just get this re-MOT'd and park it down the unit as a spare "pool" car.  NOW SOLD

      W124 300E (m103 3.0), ex David Bailey car apparently.  Lost all the paperwork, probably worthless, refuses to run right, I suspect the K-Jet is shagged.  I just can't find the motivation to do this.  It's fairly solid, I've got new discs and pads in the boot for it.  Really should just get rid of this one.  if anyone wants this please get in touch, and I'll do some photos for you.

      It won't come on the 17's, as they're valuable on their own, I've got some original wheels, but I need to sort them out with tyres, I'll try and do that and get some updated ones.  NOW SOLD
       
      S124 200TE, rusty.  Currently at a friends in Corby who's been apparently doing the welding on it for me.  I'm yet to see evidence of this.  I've basically written it off as a bad experience.  If anyone wants this please get in touch.  It does drive, but it's rough as arseholes due to degraded ignition bits and very rusty, although it might be less rusty now.  I dunno, I'll arrange some photos if I can.  Reg is G878ERP if you're curious, as you can see, off the road for ages!  NOT MOVED SINCE I STARTED THIS THREAD, ANYONE FEELING BRAVE?  MESSAGE ME!

      Rather than starting a topic for every car I reckoned it might be better if I just dumped my motory musings in here.

      The fleet is rather unexciting these days, currently consisting of the camperised ex-roofer's van Hiace and the ex-Cavcraft/dieselnutjob Rover 420.

      First off, the Hiace, it's absorbed a fair amount of my life (and income) in the last few months. I've managed to turn it from a tatty, scruffy old roofer's van to a slightly less tatty basic camper van.

      Radical difference, I know. Two proper windows professionally installed and a set of hubcaps plus a new towbar socket and a bit of cleaning. Most of the changes are on the inside, I will eventually gather all my photos together for the work done to line and insulate it and do a proper post if anyone's interested.

      So, the Rover - bought with suspected HGF due to a problem with coolant bursting out of the header tank every time it warmed up, no wipers and a broken door handle, it has been perfectly reliable since after replacing the ill-fitting aftermarket header tank lid with a proper one and changing the knackered wiper mechanism. It has a brief thread here...

      Mostly all I have done is make it dirty and add over 800 miles to it. Finally, this weekend it was time for some maintenance. First off, a trip to the local tyre centre and the slow puncture was repaired by re-sealing the wheel.



      Investigation underneath showed nice newish brake pads and discs on the front and very little rust underneath. They confirmed that the noisy, rattly exhaust is down to a blowing manifold gasket and broken up rear silencer and cat insides. Most of the noise can be reduced with a new gasket and back box so I'll get around to that eventually, it's not bad enough to be a real problem yet.

      I had a spare hour so started to get servicing bits sorted, it hasn't had one since 2014 so it's long overdue.



      New spark plugs and air filter...





      Plugs didn't look too bad but shiny new ones are an improvement. Next up, cam cover gasket which seems to be the source of most of the oil caked onto the block.



      Finally, the thermostat needs changing as it never gets above 1/3 on the gauge and takes a long time to get there. This is where things went wrong. I took the housing pipework off and was greeted by this...







      There is a thermostat wedged tightly into the rubber pipe, causing it to bulge, and nothing in the housing. It doesn't look right to me and the 'stat is properly wedged in there, I couldn't get it out. I think I'm going to have to replace the pipe in its entirety which is annoying, unless I'm barking up the wrong tree here. More annoyingly, I removed the plastic bleed screw on top of the pipe to see if it would help in pushing out the stat but it didn't and now the screw won't go back in - it seems to have been threaded onto a nut inside which has now dropped into the pipe. Bugger.

      This is the new thermostat I have, which I now think is wrong for this model (it is the same one as correctly fitted the older 220SLi).

      Any thoughts on that? Anyway, with the screw not going back in, it's stranded on the driveway for now until I can sort that particular little issue out.

      To finish the job, it needs an oil and filter change plus a full coolant flush as the stuff in it now seems to be mostly brown water. The lumpy idle hasn't been fixed by the new plugs so I'll also change the ignition leads as they're possibly the originals and are caked in oil where they're attached to the ignition module. Removing and cleaning them seemed to improve matters slightly but it still sounds crap. That said, it revs cleanly and pulls very well, with plenty of power and smooth delivery so it drives extremely well despite this.

      As some of you may have already seen over on the For Sale forum, somehow I managed to win @barefoot's Renault Vel Satis.  This is a remarkable outcome, seeing as I didn't actually buy any tickets for it.  @loserone clearly identified how much these things terrify me, and bought me two randoms.  Normally, at this juncture, I'd be overwhelmed with gratitude.  After all, it's a free car.  But it's also a remarkably fragile french land whale, constructed almost entirely from unobtainium, which answers a question that nobody asked.  I have five cars here, one out on long term loan and two jobs.  I got the mother of all bollockings from Mrs Identity; unjustly seeing as I didn't participate in the raffle and I need this like a married man needs a second cock.
      Oh, and I've just realised the road tax is a kidney per year.
      Notwithstanding, I intend to run the car until the precise moment something breaks - at which stage I will raffle it off for charity.
      Firstly, does anyone fancy bringing this down from the land of 'cobs' and 'ducks' to my place in Cambridge?  @Ohdearme did come up with a scheme, but I'm not sure if timings will work out (perhaps they will).  I'm happy to go myself - but if someone wants a day out with it then I can cover expenses (my train and petrol would be about £50) and run you back to the station in a Ford Sierra bASe.
      Don't worry if it doesn't work out.  I'm just keen to get it out of Barefoot's way, and start the adventure nightmare of VEL SHARTis ownership tenancy.
      NB: It's Castle Donnington to Cambridge, effectively.
