As promised here is a topic for my 1985 Peugeot 305 van project

4s80w4cl.jpg

The van was bought by my grandad in 1986 and used as his main workhorse until his retirement in 2010

In 2012 we moved the van from his house to a friends yard.

Here's a photo from that day in 2012:

My grandad died in May 2017 and the van was left to me, in August I went to pick up the van which I hadn't seen and hadn't been moved since 2012.

Photos from that day:

I stripped out the interior and did some poking with a screwdriver which found an ungodly amount of rust.

Ive since sent the van away to be stripped fully, blasted, welded, and resprayed. I will update this thread as progress is made.

Any questions are welcome

Hope you all enjoy!

Also thanks to Cavcraft for the help with this post!

That really is quite green!

Looking forward to seeing the pictures of the restored shell. I’d love to do that to mine one day. It’s been leaking into the foot wells and this has given me incentive to make sure it gets dried out!

Please keep up updated. I can use this thread to justify the work on my van to my family. “Look, they’re really desirable. This man is completely restoring his!”

What year is that to be a 4 speed?

Here it is with almost as much greenery as yours!

Yeah the van is 1985 but apparently the 4 speed is rare, cant find any info in the gearbox at all! Cant even find a replacement gearknob, found one other 4 speed van in france but the gearknob was just as bad as mine.

Might have to find a piece of wood and turn it into knobvan no.2  :-P

Lovley van! nice color too!

Yes it is expensive, if it was any other car i wouldn't be spending the money but due to the sentimental value Im going all in

Good for you. I’m forever threatening various family and friends that they have been left my van in my will, once it has been used to carry my coffin to the church that is. None of them have seemed to be that grateful.

Loving this!

My Dad ran a Phase 1 305 van (920 CI) from 1983 till 1993 - it was white, and converted for family use with windows cut into the rear panels and the back seat from a Renault 4 shoehorned into the rear.

A disaster reliability wise, but he loved it and maintained when it was going well, it was the best vehicle he'd ever driven. Probably why I'm still driving Pugs all these years later :)

Also, for any Irish number plate lickers out there, HFI suffix registrations were issued by Tipperary North Riding Co Council between 3/85 and 12/85, so this van was most likely registered in November 1985.

It was a bit of a wheeze at the time to buy a car late in the year, and tool around with a cardboard 'FOR REG' plate until the new year, upon which your new car would get a plate a year newer than they should have. Whoever bought this originally was unusually conscientious :D

You're not far wrong! The van was first registered on the 8th of October 1985. By a Mr John Gleeson. Croke St Thurles County Tipp.

I still have the original Brown log book!

Welcome! Excellent vehicle you have inherited, I wish you well with it.

The gearbox on this should be a PSA BE1/4 with a diesel ratio set, quite a tough gearbox but can get sloppy in action as the years go by. This particular gearknob pattern was used on Peugeots and Talbots from 1984(ish) to around 1990, though the earlier 1980-4 knob will fit

A pre-facelift 309 with a 1.1 Simca motor will have the correct gate pattern (same 'box), as would a very early misery spec 205 diesel. This type does come up on eBay from time to time but you're more than likely to find one with a 5-speed gate pattern, but if the insert on your existing gearknob can be cleaned up it can be swapped out if your're careful.

Thanks for the info! I can do some research now, the gearbox on the van is quite sloppy as you mentioned still works fine though.

The gearbox was the bit I was most worried about as I didn't know if id be able to get and replacement parts or kits to recondition it.

If you don’t mind me asking the resident Peugeot gearbox on this thread, will a diesel zx gearbox fit my 1989 1.9 305 van? It’s a five speed at the moment. I was given the gearbox when I bought the van but I don’t want to keep it in my shed for years if it won’t fitA.

Some of the run-out (1990-1) 305 vans were fitted the later BE3 gearbox as fitted to the ZX, they are pretty much the same but some things may (not definitely) need changing over - the mounts, speedo drive gear, thrust bearing, shift mechanism and clutch. Ratios or final drive may be different.

Diesel BE1 & BE3 boxes are sought after in the track day community because of the tall 5th gear.

Unless the unit already in the van is borked, you'll not really gain much from swapping the gearboxes over.

Is reverse behind fifth on the van? Then it should fit no problem.

There's a knob (fnaar) on L' Aventura peugeot citroen site for 29 euros without the plate. A bit pricey.

You could try Dean who has shit loads of Pug stuff. Not cheap either. Can't remember what his site is

called but I have a phone number if you need it. D Spares has broken a couple over the last year or so,

he's the first person I call for spares first, so he might have one.

Well I've been meaning to sign up here in forever, but kept forgetting. Thanks to someone over on another forum I frequent poking me about it recently the subject was forced back into my very brief attention span for long enough to get me to act on the instruction.

I figure that my little varied fleet might bring you lot some amusement...

      So...we've got:

1993 Lada Riva 1.5E Estate (now fuel injected, as I reckon the later cars should have been from the factory...).
      1989 Saab 900i Automatic.
      1987 Skoda 120LX 21st Anniversary Special Edition.
      1985 Sinclair C5.
      2009 Peugeot 107 Verve.

Now getting the photos together has taken me far longer than I'd expected...so you're gonna get a couple of photos of each car for now, and I'll come back with some more information tomorrow when I've got a bit more time...

Firstly...The Lada. Before anyone asks - in response to the single question I get asked about this car: No, it is not for sale. Took me 13 years and my father's inheritance to find the thing.

Yes, it's got the usual rusty wings...Hoping that will be resolved in the next couple of months.

Next, a proper old Saab. One of the very last 8 valve cars apparently, and all the better for it. I've driven two 16v autos and they were horrible - the auto box works sooooo much better with the torque curve of the 8 valve engine. Just wish it had an overdrive for motorway cruising...

Next up a *real* Skoda...back when they put the engine where it belongs, right out the back. In the best possible colour of course...eye-searingly bright orange.

Seat covers have been added since that photo was taken as it suffers from the usual rotting seat cloth problem that affects virtually all Estelles.

Then we have possibly the world's scruffiest Sinclair C5...

Realised when looking for this that I really need to get some more photos of the thing...I use it often enough after all! We have a dog who's half husky, so this is a really good way of getting him some exercise.

Finally - again, I really need to take more photos of - we have the little Pug 107.

Included for the sake of variety even if it's a bit mainstream! First (and probably to be the only) new car I've bought, and has been a cracking little motor and has asked for very little in return for putting up with nearly three years of Oxford-Milton Keynes commuter traffic, before finally escaping that fate when my housemate moved to a new job. Now it doesn't do many miles and is my default car for "when I've managed to break everything else."

I'll fill in some more details tomorrow - I warn you though that I do tend to ramble...

Hi all, new to the forum.  Thought you might be interested in what I've got myself into
I'd been after my first classic car for a while.  If it's big and made in the 70s I'm interested.  Looked at few things like P6s, Zodiacs, Victors, SD1s and various other things.  Problem was I didn't want to spend a boatload of money on something that looked alright but underneath was actually a total heap.  The solution was to buy a complete heap in the first place and spend the money fixing it.
So in January I went ahead and bought this from a colleague at work who was moving away and needed to get shot of it.

It's a part finished restoration (I prefer not started) and it needs a whole load of help if it's going to stand any chance of using a road again.
      Pros
It's right up my street.  Granada Coupes are quite odd and certainly stand out from the norm.
It still has the original engine, box, interior and most trim.
It came with loads of panels I need to repair it (mostly original Ford stock).
It came with so many spares I could probably build a few Granadas and still have stuff left over.
      It was cheap.
      Cons
Most of the front end has been cut off.
Most of the body structure is quite rotten.
It's going to take me ages.
I work at a restoration company and my boss kindly allows me to keep the car there.  So I've got access to all the gear I need to restore it.  I've been busy on the car for a while now so will post more pics over the coming days.
      Cheers

      Car : y reg Omega 3.2 MV6 196K
Rocker Gaskets replaced last summer at about 183K with genuine parts.
Proper cleaned out breather tubes on top of engine. .
Oil changed at 193K with genuine GM Fully Syth and Filter. (Cast Housing)

No leaks until 3 weeks ago. Started small, I always check the oil before a long journey (and I do a lot of them) and I've been adding a bit more often but now on Thursday I had to top up after 100 miles into a Journey, and Then again 80 Miles later (on Sunday) and again this morning at 70 miles into a Journey, AND then another 70 miles this afternoon, and now 70 miles on it needs more. I calculate about 6 litres for about 450 miles. That's a lot of rust proofing on the exhaust and lots of it on the floor.

I've not had it up on the ramps, (as Snow and rain and doesn't fit in my garage) but had it running and had a look at the filter housing area, and seems to be pouring down the back of the engine.

At first I wondered if the little wiring plug next to the Oil Filter Housing is likely to leak? but seems to be above that. (Car is too low to see without ramps)

When the Rocker gaskets were leaking before it was all very slow. Yes there was an advisory on the MOT, but nothing like this.

And it hasn't been leaking in at least 12K since I did them.

So what are we thinking ?

      I blame JohnK !!!!!

There is oil on the rocker cover because Spillage

About two weeks ago this vehicle was inadvertently advertised by stinkwheel on here. Having recognised this vehicle from my time as moderator on the 2cvgb forum, and having seen it change hands then, I was interested.

A flurry of pm's saw a seed planted in my mind. We've got some building work to do at home - so what better way to help this than to buy a van that hadn't been on the road for 8 years?

Amazingly, my wife thought it a good idea too, and we discussed the proposition with our children. A family fun bus? Why not! My 5 year old son was keen, my 9 year old daughter much less so.

Anyway - wingz123 delivered the mucky beast to my drive this afternoon. Thank you very much sir, lovely to meet you!

So here we are, project acadiane after a quick jetwash.
