insurance question - how do some of you guys do it?

Ok here is the story - I currently have my trusty mk2 golf gti which I am using as my daily but I have been given back my old 1990 audi 80 td from a friend who was using it for the last couple of years so the plan is/was to start using the audi as my winter "hack" and keep the golf off the road during the winter.

Unfortunately it has hit a snag via insurance - I am insured on the golf with the AA so thought i would see what they could do for me with an additional policy for the audi - there were a few problems which surfaced when I called them...

1. they only do fully comprehensive policies - i only really need TPFT as the car is not really worth much.

2. most of the insurance companies they deal with point blank refused to cover it (age of car).

3.for some reason even though i have about 19 years NCB with them they said they couldn't use this with the other policy hence I would have zero NCB.

So the quote the gave me....£1592!

Bearing in mind i'm a 45 year old married home owner with a clean licence i was more than a little shocked with this - even the guy on the phone was surprised - even to the point of recommending i try some on line go compare type sites!

Anyway what do some of you guys do with your cars? classic policy? cheapest one on gocompare?

And just because a thread is nothing without pics here's the cars in question.

My cars have been insured with Esure, they do a multi car discount and share no claims etc.

Every time I call them they end up giving me money for some reason. They also paid me 1200 when my Ford fusion was written off (I paid 700 for it I think).

I would go for a comparison site and see what pops up, we do that every year for our dailies, and my mini is insured on a classic car policy for minimal milage.

Declare them as at least £1000

This x1000 Merc insurance went from £600 to £290 with online quotes.

Also I'll second the classic route for the second car, they'll then take into consideration your history with the main car. I done the XM this way and it came in at £150 for the year.

Footman James.

I have my GTV Insured with them, agreed valuation £4K, 4000 miles a year. £380/yr. when the wife bought me the 145 as a wedding gift I called FJ, and they agreed to add it to the policy for an admin fee (£20 iirc) so long as the cumalitive mileage stays below 4K.

I’ve a daily anyway so no way I’d go over miles.

Only thing you need to do is make sure you declare the value as greater than £1k or they won’t insure you.

Try ringing just kampers, I am very happy with the price for the insurance they are offering for Mrs fps run around that we are picking up next week, just over £300 fully comp with both of us on there adding me cost nothing, fresh policy with zero no claims, I know for definite they are high risk motors

I would say raise your value though maybe around £1500

I have just bought back my son's 1994 Fiat Tipo 1.4ie which he sold to a local friend as a stop gap car in August 2018.  I do have a modern car as my daily, bought in November 2017 and will be using both cars when the Tipo's formalities are complete.  My previous insurers were not competitive regarding quotes and I went with Confused.com.  The Tipo was £207 fully comp, social and commuting, with my son as a named additional driver. I did not try to transfer NCD so this is for a zero NCD quote and 6000 miles per year.

TPF&T policies are out of fashion for some reason and usually no cheaper than fully comp.

I would therefore recommend, as others have, to go for an on-line comparison site quote. Save it if you are not insuring for a day or two because the quotes can vary considerably if you keep enquiring for the same vehicle.

Edited to add NCD and mileage details.

Generally, but I have had mine "mirrored" before. Depends on the company and their underwriting gods at the time.

Yeah I'm pretty sure esure just matched mine when I briefly added a second car last year , didn't think much of it at the time as I'd never had to do it before.

thanks - lot of good suggestions here - the golf should really be on a classic policy with agreed value - my insurance is up for renewal at the start of march so will probably go with a different insurer them - it has only covered 51000 miles so using it every day through the winter is doing it no favors plus it is racking up the miles - was only 36000 miles when I first got it two and a half years ago!

It is strange that comprehensive is cheaper - the audi isn't really worth much - three years ago it was rear ended whilst parked up - that pretty much wrote it off there and then - the other vehicle did it and buggered off - see the pic below for how much it was damaged...

We pulled the back of the car out using another car and with ebay i got two new rear lights but the whole back end is out of shape - car is still a very good runner otherwise - its an early 1.6 turbo diesel which i have effectively owned for 9 years - it is a perfect winter beater with (unusually) an excellent heater for a diesel and 45mpg regardless of how you drive it!

The cheapest quote I have got so far is £144 with lancaster insurance - i'll try footman james as some of you have suggested to see what they say.

Best to insure fully comp regardless, many charge more for third party for some strange reason.

If you are keeping the Golf off the road, why have it insured?

I was nervous about doing this but my uncle ( the oracle) said " given a choice of the cars on your street who's going to pinch any of your old shite". A fair point well made I thought

I would not worry about declaring it as worth £1000.  Values of cars more than 20 years old are so vague that it wouldn't be dishonest.  They're all worth what you can get for them and it looks clean enough.

That was some rear ending while parked up though.  You must've been well miffed.  I certainly would've been.

I've got a fleet policy with Bishop Calway. I can have a mix of moderns and classics, but I've only got the 2CV down as an actual classic - it being the one car I own that's actually worth something. The premiums (each car listed individually) make no sense at all to be honest. The Matiz was under £200 for a year, while the Favorit cost a bit more than the Rover.

Even if your car 'isn't worth fully comp' there are other costs greater than the value it can cover. The first car I ever insured fully comprehensive I rolled, writing it off and closing a road which got the boys in blue out to use their preferred recovery solution followed by their storage yard etc... With all that happened I was more than happy to leave it to Elephant to deal with the aftermath.

My view is you pay enough in insurance that you want it to be good when you need it. Obviously if you're 17 and insurance is 4 figures so 10% difference is substantial it's a different ball game.

I have only once found that 3rd party f + t was cheaper than fully comp on the big comparison websites.  I have had great service from brentacre on classic insurance and I think they are pretty VW friendly, and then my other cars I put on whatever bargain basement comparison website company is cheapest. I don't think I'd like to actually have to use my cover with some of the companies I've used, but they are cheap and keep the car legal.

Sheilas Wheels have mirrored my NCB for my modern(ish) Vivaro, so pay a low price.

My Saab is greatly changed from standard, with modifications to the engine, turbo, exhaust, suspension, wheels and in car entertainment. Costs less to insure than the bog standard Saab I had immediately before it. I was told by the insurers that modified cars are more cared for by their owners, which is true in my experience.

It’s worth a go with admiral multicar as I’ve got the house and 3 cars with them and that is full comp with SDP all in for £360 and that’s for a Z3 and a E36ti plus a E36 cabriolet plus a bungalow for good measure but the cars actually came in at £300

Don’t go through the comparison websites though as it will be a lot higher than going direct.

It’s worth a go with admiral multicar

I was with Admiral for one year until I discovered some really frightening small print on the policy.

The £250 XS I'd selected actually became something like a £750 XS if I didn't use their selected/recommended repairers.

For an elderly 944 & a T2? - Away from the right sort of specialists, I'd expect a guaranteed write off every time.
