dollywobbler
Great stuff! The 205 stuff is great, but then you added a BX! Full of the win. The 1.4s are really nice, if a bit short of gearing - probably not all that bad after the 305 GTX mind you.
Padz
christ, all this top garlic, 205 and Bx look as ace as the 505. How i've still yet to spot any of them locally is beyond me, must look harder!

The BX unfortunately has shat it's fifth gear and synchro - so there is an opportunity to raid the PSA parts bin for a bit more ratio to cure that! The 305 was just plain irritating, perhaps could be cured by a larger tyre though (on the original wheels of course...) Thank you everyone for the kind words. Work continues and the fleet will evolve as time and funds allow! I've got my eyes on J7 and J9 vans at the moment, and of course GSA's.

I'm either in the 505 or the other 205 I have (red Dturbo), I need to add that on here too!

MrSchwifty
Update time! First of all, I'm afraid nothing has happened to the BX yet (soz much lolz m9) - many things in life have occurred, all of them dull and all of them preventing me from getting started on the BX. However. Some 205 progress has happened! First off. The rear dampers and subframe. For some reason I decided that I wanted to properly Dinitrol the underside of the car at the rear. This of course meant I had to drop the rear beam/sub-frame - which, whilst quite an easy job, is still heavy and awkward. Still. Out it came and I cracked on with wire brushing, rust converting and then covering the underside of the boot floor, rear valance, inner arches etc with Dinitrol. The result was quite pleasing. This was using a combination of the Dinitrol Cavity wax for seams and cavities and then the black panel wax to go over the larger areas. I will be keen to see how it holds up over the coming years. Whilst the beam was out, I fitted new dampers and also re-did the rear brakes with new cylinders and shoes. The wheel bearing races were also cleaned and re-packed with new grease. Next. Bumper porn! Now the purists will know that Ph1 205's had grey bumpers and external trim. I am no purist, I do what I like - and I like black bumpers. So I set about cleaning and re-dyeing the front and rear. Here's a before and after shot of one! Much better. This was done using black trim dye which you can get off eBay. I've used it on several cars and have found it to be pretty long lasting. As part of the bumper process, they of course had to be removed from the car. Whilst doing this I unfortunately snapped a couple of the retaining bolts - they were exceptionally rusty and I don't think I would ever have got them off in one piece without a LOT of heat and in such close proximity to rubber and plastic that was not going to happen. So, I then had a little conundrum as the bolts, of course, were special Peugeot ones with a special headform - bastards! You can see the brown one alongside a complete one. The thin section rectangular head is pushed into a black plastic cap which is then heat formed around it. Ordinarily, I would trawl eBay and breakers yards to find another. But, over Christmas I acquired a Lathe (Myford ML7) - so I figured this would be a great introductory project. I am not machinist, yet, so this took a couple of attempts and rookie errors but I eventually got a result. On the right is the new bolt turned down ready to have its thread put on. The rectangular head has also been filed to shape. And this is it completed with the plastic cap formed back over it using a combination of heat gun and araldite. Very happy with the result! After this I moved on to tackle the leaky radiator - which grudgingly I had to replace with a new unit. Whilst doing so, I took the opportunity to rust protect the inner wings and front slam panel. The area under the battery tray was starting to bubble and rust, so I cleaned it back, neutralised the rust and resprayed it. The front end is now waiting to go back on, as the evenings get lighter later I will be able to progress quicker once again. Other than the major bits above, I also got the vacuum advance on the distributor reconditioned by H & H Ignition Solutions. They operate a mail recon service and I cannot recommend them enough. They properly refurbished the advance capsule for a very reasonable £25 including return postage. I didn't even know there were people that could still do that! And finally, a big thank you to @Daviemck2006. Thanks to him, I now have a gorgeous set of 1.6 GTi pepper pot alloys on the car. Quite a transformation. Very happy with them. A 505 update will be following shortly. But for now, that's it. Cheers! Daviemck2006, tobyd, Dick Longbridge and 7 others
Daviemck2006
Glad you like the wheels and it's good to see a lowly 205 5 door getting love. I have had 3 205s, a 1.6gti, a 1.1 5 door and a 1.6 auto. Thep 1.1 5 door was actually the one I enjoyed owning the most. It was just an old banger, only cost me £100 and still drove really well. The gti was good but as I'm a fat git I couldne get comfortable in the sports seats. The auto was absolutely mint condition but was boring. It was bought by a localish lad who wanted a rust free shell to build a track slag. I'm not expecting to have another 205 now, but if I do I will be pissed off with myself for selling the wheels lolSent from my SM-T585 using Tapatalk MrSchwifty
MrSchwifty
So yea, lockdown happened and I found myself at home. Luckily I had hoarded quite a few bits and with the additional time I suddenly found I had, I was able to crack on and get the little blue 205 back on the road. I had a complete nightmare with the carburettor, with constant over-fuelling and fuel just pouring into the inlet manifold. After much head scratching and sanity checking of the carb rebuild I finally traced the issue back to the replacement float needle not seating properly and not shutting off the fuel flow when the float level was correct. I popped back in the original one, BURNED the crappy replacement, and off she went. Unfortunately, I have been suffering with autochoke issues ever since. Through trial and error I have found a compromise setting where it will start and run hot of cold, but if ain't great on either! I am hoping to do a manual choke conversion soon - for which I will post a detailed guide so that it may save others pain in the future! Elsewhere, I have started slowly working through the BX. It has a new gearbox installed and I am about to replace the valve stem seals - more of a write up to follow. Anyway. When lockdown lifted, quite a few of us went a bit mental. Some went to the pubs and got hammered, some argued with staff members in supermarkets about wearing masks. I though, got drunk went on eBay and bought 2x Peugeot 104's. Yes, 2. No I don't know why. I just thought they needed to be saved. 1 is a 1978 GL model, in blue and was properly RANK having been sat under a tree for several years. This is as it arrived at the unit I share with 2 friends. Covered in algae and missing some of its face. Yes, it didn't have an oil filter or a carburettor. However, it did turn over. It was subsequently pressure washed, hoovered and oiled then left for a week whilst I took a look at the other 104. This one, is french - as in French registered and LHD. I did what you really should not do, buy an unregistered import with no paperwork. Why? Alcohol. This one was similarly cosmetically challenged, including a whopping parking dent. But, unlike the blue one, had spent it's life in Bordeaux so is very rust free. It also happens to be an early 104 - meaning it has a crap saloon style tailgate rather than a hatchback, which makes it really impractical! It's just perfect! Originally, I intended to make a good one (using the white one as a base) out of the two. Subsequently though, it turns out the blue one really isn't that bad - rusty yes, but repairable. So now I'm a big stuck as to what exactly to do! For now, the goal is to get both running and stopping. Then I'll worry about what to do next. Today, I was able to get the electrics to behave on the blue one. Next stop is, will she run? The original Solex carb was missing, so I have improvised with an SU from a dolomite. Hopefully it will do the trick. More 104 and BX progress to follow. Plus, hopefully, more 505 content. binhoker668
Lovely stuff. Loving the 104s! I have broken my leg and as a consequence would now love to have an automatic again . The 205 is lush! The bank balance is possibly rising again. Hmm. mk2_craig

carlo
Absolutely love those 104s. Surely the French one would make a great donor car, seems like you've already utilised the lights and wipers! Plus the blue one will be RHD which will be nice.
Macscrooge
Love those 104s. I had two 104SL (1124cc, bigger headlights) in the ‘80s. They could run rings round a 1.3 Metro or Fiesta. Rusty buggers though.
MrSchwifty
So me and Mrs Schwifty are no more - such is life in these Covid times. So I have a bit of a storage headache on my hands with the unit I recently started renting having space only for 2 vehicles and the blue 104 already occupying 50% of it. I am still working out what to keep and what to offload and when. The 205 or the BX need to go, but with the BX now sans MOT it's a little bit tricky. If anyone would like a very rust free (as in 99% GROT FREE) BX 14E project then please get in touch. Anyway. 104 update. The blue one runs! A manifold to fit an SU from a mini was fabricated, the points changed and re-gapped, all electrical connections cleaned up and off she went! A bit more work is required, including cleaning out the fuel tank, to get it to run continuously but happy progress nonetheless!
barrett
Those flappy-boot 104's are solid gold autoshite! Brilliant stuff. I was looking at them on LBC the other day and trying to decide if I'd rather have one of those or a 204. If it's very cheap I might be able to find a home for the white one, just not for a little while... Registering it shouldn't be a problem as there is decent UK club support. I wish I could offer the BX a home as I really want a 14, but I can't do any more projects really.
