Local mobile mechanic booked to replace the bearings on Friday.

So the e30 was readied for a road trip, I'll just nip into the boot of the merc and grab the tyre inflation device and jump leads.

Oh.. Wait.. Bastard isn't opening......

More fun to look forward to when I get back!

Local mechanic turned up, (late) and looked at the job, his plan was to take the knuckles off and press them out at his garage... We both decided that was fraught with danger/broken bolts/bushes etc.

So he went out to see if he could get a bearing puller tool..... 4 hours later, a phone call... He couldn't.

FFS!!

Anyway, he's ordered one up, and is coming back to do it next Friday.

Also got the boot open, looks like the actuator isn't strong enough to open the lock!

Great*!

So it's disconnected to allow the tailgate to open.

Following on from the week prior, the local mobile mechanic arrived on Friday (late again) however, with the correct tools this time.

He set about stripping the driver side down, only one tricky bolt, but that was sorted.

Then the next joy..... The company whom I had ordered the bearings from, and had been assured that they would fit..... (by providing make, model, year and reg number) had supplied bearings that were too deep to fit correctly in the hubs........... Great*...

Some more phoning around found a couple of local factors wanting £86 plus VAT for each bearing..... That's a no... Eventually found a local factor, which could order them in for £33 plus VAT a side.

I have ordered these, and they should be here for collection on Tuesday, so I should be able to get a chance to compare them with the original ones.

The mechanic is booked to come back on Friday, all being equal!

Also need to get the incorrect bearings refunded...

A wee vid of the bearing...

Also, this meant that the merc is stuck in the garage, which means that the E30 insurance was invalid, as it had to be in the garage overnight when parked at the home address, that was then sorted by a 45 minute call to the insurance company.... As well as a £30 administration fee....

You're a skilled bodger, don't you fancy doing the job yourself?

I am indeed, my main motivation for getting someone else to do it, was it was initially planned for my week off work, and I thought I would treat myself, plus my tools were at the unit 45 miles away, and I didn't think it would make it, also had no other call to head to the unit at the time. I'm heading through this weekend, so I'll probably grab the tool and see if I can get it done...

'a skilled bodger'... That's the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me 😂😍

So, given the last message from the mechanic, my general cynicism and the fack @320touring and I were at the unit yesterday (briefly joined by @Supernaut) I collected my bearing tool.

Sunday morning was spent enjoying the Le Mans coverage, which I had paid* for, the feed then went down, so I had nothing else to use as an excuse to procrastinate any more.

To the garage to be greeted by the below.

Had to do a little change of plate to drive it home fully.

The mobile mechanic dude had removed the backing plate and handbrake mech, which actually went back together fairly easily.

Driveshaft was a bit of a faff to get in and on, but got there eventually. Mainly due to access!

To round off the day, then bastard wouldn't start, having run out of electricity. I pushed it out the garage to reveal some* branflakes.

Took it out for a run, the new bearing is on the driver side, it still seems to be getting warm... Caliper looked OK. HARRUMPH!!

Took the opportunity to get a top* quality* picture of shite!

It's at least moving now, which means I could get the e30 back in the garage, so the insurance will be happy again!

Think I'll release the mechanic from his duties for the other one.

I think I have had enough of it now, if anyone is interested in it. Let me know. I'll mull it over for the next few days and likely fire an advert together soon.

V5 change done online this morning. Awaiting insurance company opening at 08:30 furtae cancel the policy. (to avoid buying anything else)

Boy who bought it has a 190e that he's taking off the road to restore and using this as his daily.

Shame to see it go, but cest la vie.

Associated tinkering/professional bodgery can be found here.

So long!

I actually never thought you 2 would ever sell this one, such was its tremendousness, but it did look like it was getting a bit needy for daily use.

Farewell!
