1995 BMW 518i (E34) 163k MOT sold

Recommended Posts

So, today I had the task of bringing back home the E46 (yes, that E46) Touring I had been given as part payment for another car.

On the way back it dawned on me it would be a better daily than this old heap. Heap is mean, but the newer BMW is far better for day to day driving in my opinion.

It's a reasonably painful sale but I also have to pick up something else next week and there really isn't any room for this now. In an ideal world I would keep it but I can't own 4 cars anymore, I can't really own 3 to be honest.

Okay, so I have had it a week. No FTPs so far, nothing too untoward but please make yourself aware of the issues before deciding whether you fancy it or not.

The Good.

-Oxford Green paint largely unmarked, no lacquer loss I can see, but there does seem to be a key mark down one side.

-Alloys (non original) are in good shape. Tyres are okay. Not sure about the brand, but reasonable tread.

-No bangs or knocks over bumps, and not suffering from saggy bum like a lot of old BMWs.

-Engine is quite peppy, and good around town.

-Majority of the interior is in good shape

-Odometer and dash lights all work.

-No signs of any cooling issues.

-Has the timing chain M43, not the belt M40.

-Long MOT.

-Quite devoid of rust. Sills covered but apparently are solid.

The Bad.

-Starter motor sometimes doesn't engage and just spins, completely random as to how and when it does it.

-Crack in windscreen, which will need sorting.

-Passenger side electric window works but doesn't go up too happily.

-Engine fan always on

-Spare is perished and cracked, so would really recommend getting that changed

-Some bits of grot

-Drivers seat and steering wheel showing wear. The seat has lost a bit of fabric and not as padded on the base as it should be.

-First gear quite hard to get in when the engine is cold. I found putting it in second and then first (without lifting the clutch) helps.

-Sounds like a pulley is a bit whiney under the bonnet, hot or cold. Belt looks fine.

So with that in mind, it is priced accordingly. Probably one of the cheapest E34s in the UK, but read into that as you want. It's fine to use as is, but with a bit of work this could be a really nice example (yeah yeah still a 518 lololol) and it drives pretty tightly given the mileage on it.

Oh yeah I haven't tried the sunroof, because sunroofs are pointless.

I am in Basingstoke, can deliver if you insure it (E46 will be going on the policy when it's MOT'd), pay fuel and train fare back, again I get heavy fare discounts so that helps.

That’d be right up my street if id got a banger rally in the pipeline.

Don't, that's what happened to my e34 520 last year. The cheeky fucker only went and did his banger rally then put it back on Car and Classic for almost twice what he paid me, admittedly I sold it for 3x what I paid for it . Bloody thing must changing hands for Ferarri Daytona money by now!

I think I prefer a 518 to a 520 as manuals, always felt livelier.

The 518 is supposed to have more bottom end torque than the 520, so is a better drive round town. 520 is not much more powerful but considerably worse on juice. I'd rather rock a 518i than a 520i.

Probably worth mentioning this had a lot of suspension parts replaced for the recent MOT.

Would this roffle at £10 a pop? I suspect not.

I would absolutely have my usual number 52 if it went that way.

Happens all the time im affraid, usually to other people. Used a V70 T5 last year, man that thing was quick.... but with a little over 200k on the clock, after returning it struggled to sell for a fraction of what it owed us... bearing in mind it had a brand new radiator in the centre of paris at huge cost. Even offered it up on here for 600 quid.... no one wanted it. Sold it to a mate who ran it for a month then he sold it to a bloke who wanted it for the engine.....for a 240..... shame.  First one we did in 2007 used a 518i of shark nose vintage (D plater). Should of kept that, we payed 100 quid for it and sold it on for not much more after the rally. It went on to do another rally with someone else. As far as im aware its no longer on the road.

Moving this over here in case anyone has missed it. Needing this gone within next 2 weeks due to losing parking space. Couple of faults but nothing major. Its mot'd til jan and in good running order. Price drop to £300 as is for quick sale, otherwise i fix the faults and stick it on bumtree for twice that amount! Would make a good winter beater for someone

Going to try this on here before the fun that is eBay or similar.

My mum has recently replaced her trusty old SportKa with a newer 500 and currently it’s just sat in the garage.

It’s only done 38k with I think mum being the third owner plus a very large file of bills. As you can see from the MOT history ‘a lot’ of miles have been done in the last few years....! Has the leather interior, an aftermarket Bluetooth kit, Air Con that works and four good tyres plus working remote key.

It has had some attention by a welder in the past but the filler area is solid and other than a few obvious bits on the sills and corners of the rear bumpers is in nice condition.

If anyone is interested please let me know. I’m back there later this week so can look at the paperwork or anything else on the car in more detail.

      She’s looking for about £750-800.

Car is currently SORN and located in deepest Lincolnshire (near Spilsby).

Departarting from the norm, I'm being lazy and have actually managed to convince the seller to deliver to my house at no cost. It's only the other side of town but haven't got the time to collect today.

2 hour countdown starts at 9am

Hot on the heels of last week’s collectioneering of a Xantia, another collection starts here and now. Well it is probably a collection as long as the car is as described, but I am optimistic.

Clues. It’s enormous yet quite cramped. Never had one before and it could be considered blessed, saintly even!

      It's the green one.
If you're proper horny for it then PM me, but anyone with cash can buy a car any time. Meh.
Would roffle, but CBA with the admin.

      Therefore, funtime!

      Another KruJoe-spec 99p start AUCTION...

(GBP (Pounds Sterling) bids only, no licked Twixes (John_F, I'm talking to you), bid increments 50 pence or more, that's up to you. Auction ends 24 hours after the last bid. Other T&C's may apply if I haven't thought of them yet.)

      It's a risk, but I'll take it.
I've thought of a number as a reserve, roughly bridge price plus today's £50 MOT fee, so above that, I'm happy. If it doesn't work, we'll re-think, but his is will be a cheap car for one of you lot.

      Location:

Central, so close to everyone on mainland UK.

Collection: most days/times are possible, evenings are good. Relaxed timescale, storage is not a problem here. I can bring you to it from Skipton bus or rail station.
      The Car.
My dependable daily for two FTP-free years. Ex-JohnK and Bramz.
1.4 Rti run-out model, lots of toys.
Cheap tax and cla$$ic policy friendly (£140pa, Carole Nash. A.Flux quoted similar).
Tested until 31 May 2020, advised on two back tyres.
Not yet 62,000 on the dial. Likely to be SORN'd before June. V5 here, with loads of history.
New oil and filter last week.
Good batt, exhaust, brakes etc. There are a few minor niggles, I've just lived with it. Character, innit.
Squishy-comfort velour in fine fettle. (Almost) everything works.
The bodywork scrubs up well but there's some bits of rust if you really go looking. It doesn't stop it being a respectable motor… until… last week one of my favourite brothers rubbed a tractor down the side, damaging two doors and the mirror.

All still work fine, and I still have the (undamaged) plastic strip from the door. I don't have the arsedness to try improving it cosmetically and I'm ready for a change of daily anyway. The worst would likely push out from inside. As would the small bit on the arch – it's single skinned there. Until that happened, nobody has ever turned their nose up at it, and it has attracted a lot of positive conversation.

      99p anyone?
