The Jaywick Chevy

If it had been left in that state for years, I’m sure it would be found to be breaking some law or other if the police/council really wanted shot of it - Causing a danger to other road users/Public nuisance/Vehicle abandoned in a dangerous condition etc.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the letter to the Automobile is some giffer/nutter’s attempt to moan about the police impounding it. Maybe he paid for it to be released and put it back in the exact same place!

Shame the old boy seems to have lost the battle. At least he got the car back but its a piss poor show having the police remove it then return it with missing bits. I'm guessing he means the parts were removed by the tow company or someone there. If so the police should be investigating.

the police are too busy protecting the wealthiest to look into crimes affecting the plebians

Nice.

Let's not turn this into a 'my opinion of the police is...' thread.

Some lowlife has hit the car, wiped out the back end and driven off.

Someone else has stolen it and stripped some of the harder to find parts.

The elderly owner has been reunited with his now utterly ruined car.

He can't afford to bring it back from the brink and basically his only option is to let go of what was once his pride-and-joy.

I feel gutted for him. What a shite situation. If the car were a little less terminal-looking, I'd be pinging an e mail to Tim and Fuzz right now to see if they could help out the poor old chap.

At long last the car has now gone.

I'm still totally perplexed by this whole thing. If the car got nicked, where does this snap of it being removed under police escort last June fit into the picture? Somebody should ring the boke and ask him WTF is actually going on (I'm not sure even he knows tbh)

That is a great idea.

I wasn't knocking the police. I just wasn't sure if police removed it or not but you have clarified that which I appreciate.

Tim and fuzz may be a damn good shout

yeah that was my mistake, drink may or may not have been involved, not that it justifies it

Could it be the car on the transporter is being returned? Regarding "abandoned" cars, earlier in the year spotted an 04 reg Ka that obviously hadn't moved for some time. It had a notice stuck on the windscreen from the council saying that it was in such a condition that it should be scrapped and would be removed by a certain date. It didn't really look any worse than any other 17 year old KA,and a quick check revealed it had tax, Mot and insurance. I quite fancied it for a project and knocked on a few doors, but no one knew who it belonged to and were keen to see it gone as it was on a busy road where parking is at a premium. A few days later it had gone, so that was the end of that. Wonder what powers there are to remove such vehicles.

Surely it’s pretty clear a car isn’t abandoned whilst all those three things are in date? Was it legally parked? - because if so it seems like a clear case of having been illegally towed. I know people aren’t travelling as much as usual at the moment, but unless someone knew otherwise, the owner could easily just be unwell or away or something.

Didn't make any sense to me either. The only obvious safety fault I could see was a small reflector missing from a rear light. It was parked facing the right way on an admittedly busy road, but no parking restrictions of any sort. Since parking was at a premium, I would guess someone from one of the nearby houses had complained about it. Any ideas how to find out who owns a vehicle in those circumstances? Did contemplate leaving a note on it with my phone number, but it wasn't in the most salubrious of areas so I thought better of it.

Just remembered, it was mentioned as being up for sale in a classic car paper a week or two ago for 2k,with a phone number. Apparently the owner had left it out overnight to go to a car show in the morning and it had been run into. It was then stolen and trim parts removed, then returned by the police, which would account for the photo of it on a transporter. Owner is in his 80s and hasn't the heart to repair it.

Has anyone else seen the trailers for Kathy Burke's new two-part documentary about "money"?  It looks like she went to Jaywick as part of the filming, and there is a clear shot of a 1960 Chevy part-covered in a garden.  Too close for coincidence?  In last night's episode she didn't go to Jaywick, so I'm guessing it'll be next Monday.

Just started to watch the first episode on catch up and came on to say the same thing but you're way ahead of me! It's definitely the same car

It positively hurts to say this but... I don't think that poor old car will ever see the road again.  The after - crash pics are distressing for me, never mind the owner!  I know these cars have a proper chassis like Huggy, but it's still serious damage.  And now, how long since the crash?  And the car is still in a garden of sorts, under a cover of sorts...  Not looking hopeful, is it?

I'm sure all the bits for this are easily available in the states, including a second-hand rear wing, and being one of the most popular cars of its era I can't imagine the bits are expensive. If it's for sale for £2k that doesn't seem like a big investment if you really did want to get it back on the road. I reckon for £5k you could have this back in use without too much hassle - a pocket-money 50s Yank. Worst case scenario you'd get your money back (eventually) by breaking it.

im with Barrett on this one

surely this could with the right person and a little bit of them things they call moneys

could relatively easily be returned to the road

I mean cars with far worse bodywork damage and missing all mechanicals have been/are being restored on this forum alone!

as they say, never say die!

it just needs to find the right person who has the drive to want to fix it up etc :)

I don’t doubt it ‘could’ be fixed, most things can be, but it’s not just a rear quarter. You’ll need a new quarter panel, all the now missing or bent chrome/brightwork, possibly repairs to the trunk lid, any bent quarter frame/inner wing metal will need replacement or straightening, there’s almost certainly going to be rust repairs needed given the overall appearance of the rest of the car… it becomes a bigger list than the obvious. Plus, most if not all the bits will need to come from the US so that adds shipping and taxes.
And if I’m honest here, given the place this car lives in I’m not sure the owner is likely to be very flush!

Id love to see it get done, I’d give it a go myself if it were mine, but it’s unfortunately got the look of a car that was a bit rough anyway and now it’s suffered the collision damage and parts robbery I think it’s days are going to be numbered. It’ll probably sit for a year or three under the cat piss tarp slowly rusting even more, then who knows. Oval? Engine donor for something then scrap? I don’t fancy it’s chances sadly.

Id love to be proven wrong though!
