Do any of you guys notify your insurance when you change wheels etc?

Just wondering because every time I asked they tended to say I needed a specialist policy, or engineers report, or......

No one ever said 'that's fine sir'.

20 odd years ago I put TSWs on my 205Git and dutifully told the insurance company and their response was "if they are stolen then we will only replace with standard parts" and that was it.

I'm really not convinced that was right, but that was the response they gave.

I think I would just go with the "as bought" defence. How are you supposed to know what wheels we standard fit?

(I know we know but they don't know we know.)

Even worse than fraud wheels!

I don't trust spacers, all that extra length on the studs etc. It just doesn't seem a good idea to me. I've got a feeling buggering about with offsets upsets the castor/ackerman angles too, but I don't know any details to prove that.

Yeah, none of that is correct. Caster is independent of offset, Ackerman is cancelled by equal changes on both sides, studs don't care about length - they are torqued down perpendicular to the hub face and don't experience any side loadings.

I'd say don't do it, for no other reason than they're minilite reps and minilites are fucking awful.

If however you find wheels you want in a different pcd, then 15-20mm adapters are easily available for around £100 a set.

Probably not bothering with wheels unless something unmissable comes up.

I finally bothered to straighten the steering wheel today (I'd mounted it one spline off).

I love these and the R8 rovers because so much glass. Lovely light airy interiors, with minimal amounts of dashboard = lovely

In fact jaguar have ripped this off to great effect recently. How the main dash is low and minimal with the sort of wrap around bit that extends into the door tops. It's my favourite modern interiorb5846c3f529ea8aa07528e37701efb4c.jpg

Honda used the same idea (but way more showy) in the Prelude of the same era.

After about two weeks of fucking about, the guy selling me the parcel shelf and headrests claims to have posted them.

Progress, if they don't show up by Friday I might have to go nuclear though. the Civic FB groups aren't that interesting anyway.

  • 1 month later...

This has been working faultlessly recently. It's been used for a bit of all sorts, couple of good long runs to stretch its legs. My parents have been using it more than me, though I told them to be careful (I wasn't keen on this) as I didn't want them just running about locally in it, not getting up to temp etc, in case the worst happened and it HGFd.

It HGFd.

Water channel as ever because D-Series.

Somehow we ended up with the wrong gasket kit so the Civic is just sitting in the garage with no head while we work out what to do.

Turns out the carbs have never been cleaned either.

In happier news I've sourced front headrests.

Man maths in action. New rear tyres are needed for the steels, but at £40-50 a corner before fit and balance, and seemingly no way to get them cheaper (even on 13"s?) I decided on an alternative approach. I've been toying with the idea of some nice subtle wheels for it to chop and change with the steels as I feel - I figured some Watanabes would look nice but I'm not made of money.
I discovered the next best thing, in the form of Panasports. Much easier to get hold of, a bit cheaper (though a lot of sets going for £300, unrefurbished and fucked tyres etc) and as good looking. Common fit on MX5s too.

I found a refurbished set on eBay with four nearly new Uniroyal RainExperts on them, £320 bin or auction with reserve. Didn't sell, I bid them to £110 and reserve not met..
14", the right offset, right width, and the tyres are almost exactly the same diameter as the standard 13"s on the Civic. Couldn't ask for more.

Found the same guy on an MX5 sales page and offered him £250 for them, he accepted so I popped off to the Midlands for them, of course the satnav took me past my old uni halls and the Molineux stadiums in Wolverhampton, the one place I vowed I'd never go again after my hellish few months there in 2014.

For the price I'd say I did pretty damn well especially compared to the £110 or so two 13" tyres would cost to replace. The Volvo is performing faultlessly and returning good MPG on the run too. da076b8636152c1cdc743702a733bc4a.jpg33f2e61e42ef8324a312bfdec57a95bd.jpg5755595ea6299c89394abb06ee64fefa.jpg

Panasports are good lightweight wheels.

A few years back (Before kids etc) I spent ages painstakingly refurbishing a rough set and documented the process with my old 'RandomPrecision' handle on MX5Nutz....

With good tyres on them that sounds like a decent deal you've got!

Tried to fit a rear wheel on the Civic out of interest. Needs smaller wheelnuts but I knew this anyway.
A slightly more pressing matter is the fact the centre bores appear to be the same size but don't want to mate up. More investigation required, I suspect the powder coat on the wheels is at least partially to blame.
I'm an idiot and I had my centre bore measurements backwards. The Civic one is 2mm larger. File, or something?

Old Man found a 56mm aerosol cap in the garage, so we used it as a bore template to use a round file on the bores.

I then found that the only thing stopping the wheelnuts from going on was a removable plastic collar which I presume was to hold the wheeltrims on to the steels. This just unclipped and with that the front wheels were fitted. There's no space to fit the back ones yet. a7d6ea517512d965423286b41eadc9d8.jpg54ef57016832004ca2dc741e96304596.jpg

Meanwhile, the head is off. It would be on but we were sent the wrong gasket kit (I'm not sure if this is Old Man's fault or what). f49a88da02282872c2623ea90fda7a1f.jpg

How are you holding the car to the roof of the garage?
