Plan of works tonight.

MGF is being picked up by the fragging man tomorow afternoon. It's currently in my garage with two wheels and a caliper off. Re-assemble and roll out.

Garage is covered in cat litter which was soaking up veg spills. remove all this.

Also full of empty veg bottles. Flatten these down and put in boot of MG, better than taking them to the tip.

Then get the 205 in, two bottom arms being delivered for it tomorrow so depending on how time is going, get it up on stands and at least one of the current bottom arms cracked off.

We'll see how much of this actually gets done.

So I of course came home and fell asleep on the couch.

Did eventually stir.

This was the scene at the garage.

Eventually got the MG back on all fours and rolled out into the open. Taking full advantage of it going for scrap:

Well its cheaper than a skip.

It's now waiting outside the lockup looking sorry for itself, truly on death row.

Advisories on MOT for front ball joints and a noticable knock. New front arms procured.

First a roll

All in all, very happy with this wee car.

Starts first flick of the key, does 55mpg giving it a reasonable shoeing round the doors, 65 on a run.

Little tinworm to be found and is great fun to drive.

Unsure if I should take veg steps, it's a Lucas pump but hoping it would cope with a conservative 50/50 mix of new veg to diesel, would certainly give the 405 a run for its money in the ppm stakes that way.

A Bosch pump and injectors should be easier to find and cheaper for a non turbo XUD if you want to go down that route. I have killed a Lucas pumped Rover 218D running it on veg, but I was taking the piss - 100% veg in the depths of winter. It lasted for several thousand miles. The ex-320t/reb Polo mit Lucas pumpe was run on veg for a while and did a lot better with careful* use.

  • 2 weeks later...

Been a busy couple of weeks, here's a little recap.

The 405 was due to undertake a 500 mile round trip to Liverpool airport last Sunday, for the benefit of my three passengers I thought I'd clean the detritus out it. Got carried away and as documented elsewhere gave it a fair polishing.

The car ran a treat on 100% chip diesel and conveyed us in complete comfort on both legs.

Prague was fairly disappointing as far as chod spottage went, most streets looked like this, rows of Skodai;

Did spot this beauty though;

I returned on Wednesday to find some dick had shunted the 205 and of course just fucked off without leaving a note.

Every cloud and all that, I took the opportunity to upgrade* to gingercators;

Yesterday saw a run up to Crail, it was one of their standard drag race days but with a small selection of French machinery. There weren't too many cars there, but some nice beasties;

The eagle eyed among you will have noticed numbers daubed on the 205 and @320touring's GSA. Can only mean one thing...

Neither were fast, but they were very, very close. Times below (think the one that shows me in the RH lane towards the end was in fact one of the GSAs runs as other than the first run I was always in the left hand lane.

The second one includes me running through the staging lights, having to reverse whilst the lights changed and remembering the handbrake as I went for 2nd...

The 205 was consistently faster, and launched better.

Me getting ahead in the first vid was due to young Davehedgehog31 being asleep at the wheel.

The quarter-mile times are very interesting. I suspect that the CX would be slower than 20 seconds over the same distance as the 3-speed automatic is slow-witted most of the time and doesn't take kindly to being hassled.

Sounds like a race against the 320T Merc could be interesting. I suspect 24 seconds @ 56.3mph

As quick as that?

3HP22's glacial progress could be a "struggle-to-keep-an-eye-opener". Actually, come to think of it there are glaciers out there that move faster than a 3HP22.

What mileage did that polo end up dying at in the end? I was fairly sure it was done for after my complete lack of mechanical sympathy while delivering in it.

It didn't die but the MOT test expired, and I couldn't see it passing another one. Went to the fragger.

Given I tried to jack it from the jacking point and the arch came away, you're probably right. I found myself getting nostalgic for it the other day, but it really was grim rot wise.

Aye it's a shame, the engine and gearbox were fine and it went well, it took me all over the place while I had it for very little money.
