Fleet changes have been afoot.

The 205 sadly left to a new owner, already been hinted at but sure they will make themselves apparent shortly.

The Saab has had it's first full tank;

Not too terrifying, certainly compared to the Jeep.

I find myself with scarce time for the fleet nowadays, which is a bit shite. After all the duties of work and family are taken care of I've maybe got a couple of hours a week.

Just as well the Saab and Jeep continue to just work. Since I bought the Saab I've put about 1500 miles under it's belt and it's taken it in it's stride. Comfy, fast, working air con and a good stereo, perhaps 35mpg if driven nicely. Not bad.

I have rewarded it with a councours restoration;

After progressive sandpaper;

Nipped over to @320touring unit to assist with transfer of parts from donor saab to @blackboilersuit Aero. Thanks for the screw cover!

It also met it's younger Swedish cousin;

As an aside, a quick question for anyone with knowledge of the B205/B235 engine.

My car burns a bit of oil on startup if it's been sitting overnight (was advertised as such), needs topped up at a rate of roughly 1L/1000 miles. It has been running on 5w/30 fully synth which I believe is the recommended grade.

I'd like to try some 10w40 at the next change to see if it reduces consumption any. However, I know the oil pickups are a known issue on these, is the thicker grade likely to cause any issues there?

107 has done some 600 miles since I picked it up on Friday night.

Gave it an oil change;

IMG_20201028_164304.thumb.jpg.60fbae3dd4ba417d673bb073228640d2.jpg

Went through to u-pull-it at Inverkeithing with a shopping list of;

Towing eye cover, passenger side interior door pull, parcel shelf, wheel trims.

I of course got absolutely fucking none of these items. I did however spy two high spec Aygos with nicer interior bits. I pecked the two of them for a nice alcantara type interior and a leather steering wheel and gear knob.

The remains;

The haul;

The desperation;

IMG_20201029_140924.thumb.jpg.277b5a8ff2d693bba238580c6fce22f2.jpg

It fitted somehow;

@domekindly offered a sheltered car port to fit the interior. Out with the old;

IMG_20201029_174420.thumb.jpg.dd94e06b6865b77b611ab98e383903c4.jpg

In with the new;

The peugeot branded airbag fitted in place of the Toyota branded one. It's a nice chunky leather steering wheel and feels much nicer than the plastic item. The airbag isn't quite as much of a clash as the photos make it look;

Happy with that, total cost for the haul was £72 and has given the interior a big lift. The seats are in really good nick too.

Worth keeping an eye out for the last version of that shape for the stereo.  It's identical in fitment but beings useful additions like Bluetooth connectivity and a USB port.  Biggest limitation out of the box is that the factory speakers are pants.  However fitting better ones means hacking away some plastic behind the dash as they helpfully put a bit of moulding right in the way of fitting a speaker with a deeper basket.  With a better set of speakers it will sound way better.

Had my 107 for a couple of months shy of 10 years and 60K plus change miles.  Great, capable little cars.  Even if changing the radiator is a royal faff.

That much better, are you planning on changing the stereo ? I have a fascia plate adaptor I can lob in the post if you want ?

That would be great actually. Let me know how much it will be and I'll send you pennies and my address!

I had that thought too. They look quite expensive on eBay though at £100+. Do look much neater than an aftermarket unit.

That's a good innings on your 107. This is my third one (well, two previous C1s). Can't see by them for cheap transport really. Yours looks like it was a good spec, did it have A/C?

Had a productive lunch hour* today. My blower was only working on setting 4 of 4. Resistor is helpfully buried under the top of the dash.

The part;

After about 30 minutes the dash top, complete with airbag etc was out. Nothing too fiddly.

The resistor is here, with the black plug on it;

New one popped in, dash reassembled. No airbag warning lights or anything. And...

I had an Aygo black as a courtesy when my 107 was in the shop, and the interior is so much better. Plus the Aygo Black has speakers in the doors, so if you go back to that place you were at you could get the door cards from them and fit them on to the 107.

Also, one thing I will do on mine, the heater knob has always pissed me off in the dark. You can drill out the little dimple on the knob, put a bit of clear plastic in it, and it will light up indicating what level you got your heater at.

@gm Yeah, it's been an excellent series. Not sure on their definition of budget but it's all relative! haha

@sgtberbatov I did actually think about that. The door cards weren't there. There was a 5 door with them but assume they're different. Not sure if the wiring would be in the doors anyhow. Sounds a good trick with the dial, I'll give that a whirl.

I think the 3 door is slightly longer than the 5 door, so probably not.

  • davehedgehog31 changed the title to Hedgehog Motors - The Japanese Mercedes

So Jeep oot, sold remarkably easily with a Gumtree ad and the first viewer offering me what I was after and taking it away.

Look at the Low Cost, High Liability thread they said, it will be fun they said.

I have this thing I say about Lexai..... it's like the Japanese Mercedes. I was keen on a GS initially, but eventually got to looking at RX's. Not really something I'd considered before but spied a really nice looking one on a Lexus forum, sent a tentative query and after back and forth, photos and videos received a collection was arranged.

Fittingly it snowed on it's first day in Glasgow;

IMG_20201203_102703.thumb.jpg.cb38b4ea6124ae2fa7e20cf825c486b9.jpg

Saab has gone to live with @loserone at least for now, which tied in with the collection.

It's an RX300, so 3.0 V6, no hybrid. SE-L model, so has much added jeopardy in the form of air suspension, electric tailgate etc. It certainly seems to have been a well looked after car though, so we'll see how it goes.
