Multi-coloured shite swap

There is an increasing trend on Facebook/Gumtree for owners to offer their car up for swapsies with the immortal lines WHY (what have you) or WYG (wot ya got), and 'cash my way' or, sometimes (but rarely) 'cash your way'.

Thing is, I really don't understand how this works - how do you compare one shite car with another ? is there some sort of magic formula applied by the parties involved ?

For example, is someone with a fucked Peugeot 206 expecting a rusty Ford Ka as a comparable swap, or are they expecting a Golf GTI ?

I find these 'swap' ads incredibly frustrating - oftentimes the swapper won't even consider selling the car outright, and you can guarantee it's always something you fancy, but no they will only consider a swap with a 7-seater MPV because 'fambly, innit bruv'.

It would be interesting to create a ready reckoner to enable us to understand decent comparisons to offer in a swap deal

eg

Rover Metro = Peugeot 106

And, selfishly, what the hell would be considered a decent swap with a PT Cruiser ? A pile of dog shit maybe ?

As one particular Autoshite legend put it:

When I am King, every thread on Autoshite will be a thread about people swapping Rovers.

http://autoshite.com/topic/17328-great-rover-swappage-event-to-be-continued/?hl=rover%2Bswappage

Anyway, this is basically just a shameless and very tenuous plug to remind people that the gorgeous Rover 45 that I swapped in the above thread is back up for sale...

I think you are missing the point.

If it's anything like my local FB selling group, everything is either totally fucked (m9) or offered at more than new retail price (and often both).

So what the swappers are expecting is a brand new Q7 and cash their way for a fucked Ka.

Allow me to answer this . I’ve swapped numerous cars over the years and it’s usually because I can’t sell whatever I have, but usually it’s easier than the grief of selling and buying.

But, I’ve messed up in the past and swapped a good car for a shitter. I have also swapped a shitter and got a good car so it’s swings and round abouts.

Some examples

MGZS for pink Audi A4

Gold Saxo VTS for 21k Rover 220

Rover Coupe Turbo for shitbox BMW 318

Above 318 for 325

Rover 214 cabby for 2.8 A4

220GTI for 200VI

BRM 200 for diesel Mk3 Fiesta

Something I can’t remember for a Civic MB6

Xr3i for something

T5 V70 for something

306 gti6 for xantia estate (which I loved)

ZT for a Mk5 Fiesta

220gsi for a Metro

Metro for a Vectra B

Most swaps don’t even involve a test drive either as you both sort of know they have issues and you’re swapping to get rid / something else

With the exception of the 2.8 A4 they all had issues which I would have begrudged changing on the current car and yet the new car deserved the money spending on it somehow.

I think it’s the excitement of getting a new car tbh. Stupid really. Also consider all the insurance swaps and tax money etc. I’ve sort of grown out of it now.

Having sold plenty of sub £1000 cars the amount of swaps I have been offered is ridiculous, its always a tracksuit wearing benefit claiming yobbo who thinks a fucked zafira with 2 weeks mot is a fair swap for a tidy mk2 focus, FB is awash with them, I have also listed bikes on swapz, and folk were still asking to swap cars worth around £400 for a £4k bike, I did however swap a mint Versys for a nice Hayabusa, which worked out well.

One occasion I remember is that I agreed to swap my wife's old Zafira for a similar age Clio provided the Clio was as described and had no lights showing on the dash, the Clio owner was adamant his car had no issues and duly drove from outside Birmingham to Kendal, when he arrived almost every light was on on the dashboard and he offered me £20 as that was all it would cost to have them extinguished, I bet he had a long drive back with a stern faced wife and bored kids in the car.

I eventually swapped the Zafira for a mk4 Golf Gti, which was a good car, but I did have my concerns at first as the brake light switch was held together with masking tape and didn't work, a new switch was all of £8  :? but it proved to be a solid car.

I don't bother any more as I can't be arsed with most people, I'll price what I am selling low and the first person with the cash gets it, life is too short to be dealing with dickheads.

My best swap was in about 1990, I swapped a Mk2 Escort estate that had scruffy Fishnet Recaros fitted , with a Gipsy for a Mk4 2.0 Ghia Cortina estate. The Cortina was immaculate but the inside stank , and he'd been nicking caravans with it. The latter fact I only became aware of after Mrs N was stopped by the 5-O a few* times.

Hence it had to go, so I swapped it for a Mk4 Zodiac Executive , found in The Midland Autotrader, with a guy in Leicester( about 60 miles away, so well out of the area )

The Zodiac shit its transmission on the M1 on the way home, I got the arse and phoned up the seller and had a right moan at him, harsh words were exchanged.

Next morning he was outside my house with a car load of mates, I looked out of the window, phoned a couple of my brothers for backup , hoped they'd arrive before I was killed , then went out armed with a baseball bat...

The lads jumped out of the Cortina and went to the back, to get weapons , I thought. Then appeared struggling with a BorgWarner 35 ! He had found and bought a replacement transmission brought it all the way from Leicester and even offered me £20 for my trouble. I quickly hid the bat in the hedge.

As I was thanking him , suddenly one of my brothers screeches into the street like a Sweeney villain , jumps out of his green S2 Daimler Sovereign shouting " Come on then, who wants it!?"

Tiny bit embarrassing .

I have a friend who used to swap cars constantly, usually getting a few quid his way in the deal! On one memorable Friday we went out in his Renault 5 and swapped it for a Fiesta (In a backwater on the moors) and did about 10 miles before he realised he'd fucked up in grand style, so back into the freeads/AutoTrader and another likely option was found close by (couldn't go far, the new car was fooked!) and an MG Midget was acquired and we departed quickly. Later, the same day, he swapped that for a Dacia Duster jeep thing that was about 10 months old and on the way back he swapped that for a ... Renault 5!

A MUCH newer/nicer Renault 5 and so he went out in a 5 that was worth about £100 and came back with one worth about £1500 and had a ton in his pocket!

I do get the swapping thing, I have ASD and I absolutely hate selling cars, can't think of anything worse, the stress of dealing with strangers, the stress of selling something which has previously performed well but "what if there's something wrong with it after they buy it?"

But with a swap, there's a risk on both parts, which mitigates the guilt if something does go wrong.

Also, I sometimes get bored of a car for whatever reason but don't really have a clear idea what I want, in which case a swap means I might get something interesting offered to me without having to pay out any money.

For instance, my pickup is currently broken (head gasket or cracked head) and I'm fed up with fixing it, a swap might be a good way for me to not deal with it anymore, not spend any money and get something I'm not yet bored of fixing.

I used to use swapz years back, but got fed up with offers of things I specifically stated I didn't want or were horrendously over valued.

And of course that whole story about the guy who started off with one red paper clip to swap is pretty cool

Someone offered me a Nissan Almera Diesel for my mint Astra Coupe a couple of months back, no cash offered as a top up.

Although the advert clearly stated the price of my car was £1000 and I would only consider a larger car in a swap such as a Rover 75, there he was.

Later on the Almera was up for sale for £500.

If you don't ask you don't get I suppose but there is a line beyond which you start to get a bit frustrated.

Ive never really understood the swap situation when your swapping something effectively like for like. I remember my dad selling his Sierra and someone wanting to swap it for a Citroen BX. The cynic in me would suggest a lot of the time it’s someone swapping something that’s fucked for something they hope is better.

In response to the original post, a Chrysler PT cruiser is a car I'd like to try on day, perhaps I'm broken....

What, even a noisy diesel with a gear change akin to waving a finger in the Royal Albert Hall, and the sound of any other wobble-boardist who isn't Rolf Harris a constant accompaniment to your journey as you lurch along the road ? You're welcome to it....you broken man.

Confident prediction: in 15 years' time, shiters will be crossing continents to rescue some shitheap PT Cruiser.

And we'll all want a go in it.

:-D
