Additional additional...you have checked that the carb itself is flat haven't you?  It wouldn't be the first time I've seen a carb (especially where it's fastened to a softish mounting block) that's been overtightened leaving the carb base itself shaped like a banana.

Nope, but I'll do that next time on a flat surface.  I've been careful not to overtighten previously, although I'm hoping on the last attempt I didn't overdo it and warp any of the bases.

A job for Saturday when the roads and shops turn to bedlam...can't be arsed even looking at the damn thing at the moment.

I've bought that for the sake of a tenner, so what I'll do is:

-Try the thicker gaskets first.

-If no success, then the new base plate.

-If still no success, definitely give up on it.  Or perhaps remove that heatshield no. 2 for one last fettle.

Trying to help Rob out by googling around this issue last night brought up a lot of R5 stuff - so I think you might be right.

Also did the AMC built ones use the same Carb set up (I know they used a 1.4)? @PhilA might have an idea about that...

Unfortunately no. What happened here was the 1.4 got used in California only, with multi point injection because the carb models couldn't pass Cali smog requirement.

The rest of the country got the 1.7 with a carb to begin with, then the 2.0 with throttle body.

There's even less listed for the Alliance range than what you have. I have to go cross reference and look up stuff for the 5/9/11 to get parts.

Hope you can get this sorted Rob. Can’t help but going to mention that Renault specialist off  Lewisham Way just in case they might be able to help. Will google the name and add it when I get a chance.

Yep I've tried him in the past for advice when I had those noise issues, but it only went as far as emails.  He's a Renault 4 specialist and doesn't really get involved in other stuff.  Plus he always seems to be busy, which is good for him!

Sorry, late to the party here but this is the same 1.7 OHV engine as a contemporary Volvo 300, correct? Can Brookhouse Volvo in Ipswich source anything? Does Volvo 340 carb base plate turn up anything on ebay? @tobyd - do you know offhand? Might that Mac chap in Needham have something that could be of use here? That carb looks familiar?

Thanks Stanky but I've bought one now (the one egg found after doing some parts searching).

I'll see if a new base plate is the miracle cure before loading the C&C advert.  Bit sad to be giving up but the interest has evaporated...next pleasure* is the broken Carlton.  Recored radiator is pending collection, so I'm keen to get that bugger mobile again!

Ah, not to worry - I'm 95% sure its the same engine and same carb so whether its installed in a Volvo 300 or Renner 11 it should* work. Sorry I'd only just seen this though!

Seems cheap if you dont mind paying a pro to just 'get it sorted'. If it was a Manuel (sic) I'd be tempted (and I had £500). GLWS!

That's the thing, I don't really.  Plus it'd need to get transported to wherever the pro is.  I've had 18 months out of it so haven't done too bad - old car can shat itself at any moment disclaimer etc.

Don't undersell it on C&C Rob - I remember this car got a lot of attention at FOTU 2019...(but I know attention is different from someone putting their hand in their pocket).

You never know, Gavin from Petrolblog may well publicise it for you if you ask on Facebook or Twitter as he is a massive Renner fan and has a lot of #frenchtat followers...

Now sold to a trusted shiter and it'll be in safe hands.  That's a weight lifted too, as I'm not very good at having broken cars sat around unless they're under cover or out the way of nosy neighbours.  Which does limit what I can buy to a degree, which is no bad thing I suppose...
