Jonathan's Saaab Tech2 wanted in NW

I thought I might as well start a thread to put updates in rather the polluting the news 24. I've been over to Manchester with work today which has given me a good run out to get used to her and whilst it's mostly good there are of course a few niggles. I do like the way it drives and I have to say in spite of the mismatched rear shockers it handles better than I though it would given its dubious ancestry and obscene amount of power through the front wheels. Also the ride isn't as stiff as I feared (although it's probably as well I came at it from the stiffly-sprung Primera rather than a Citroen...) Sitting in the leather armchair cruising along it's a very fine place to be listening to the excellent stereo and generally feeling like a winner.

Of course not all is rosy and I have so far detected the following issues:

Heater problem; I suspect a broken flap or linkage because although in the front cabin the temperature so far seems temperate it often seems to be fighting itself with cold air (the air con does work) coming out of the front vents and hot air out in the rear passenger cabin. Just as well I rarely have rear passengers because I bet this would be a delight to fix.

Suspect engine and/or subframe mounts. When you're in drive with your foot on the brake there is more vibration than I think is normal and sometimes there is a suspicion of a knock when you're being heavy handed.

I think I am going to be buying a DI cassette. The misfire was absent driving to Manchester however on the way back after some time in heavy traffic I was able to get it to misfire when I booted it when the boost needle approaches the red. After the car had cooled down for a couple of hours and I drove home the misfire had gone again; that it's a problem when hot makes me feel pretty convinced it's the coilpack. I might chance it until September's pay day and buy a brand new genuine one if the car hasn't exploded by then. Or is it the case that they are usually damaged by bad plugs and a second-hand genuine one would be a good bet? Advice appreciated.

So with these things and the other side of the back suspension to grapple with I have a few things on the job card (oh and of course an ATF change and oil and filter) but ultimately I think I've done well. It's a bloody nice car.

The heater is likely the blend flaps. The output on the motor is a socket the flaps fit into and it cracks so it spins without adjusting the temp.
Hold auto and off on the ACC panel till it goes into self test and the codes may confirm it. I say may as mine had this fault but didn't cause a code.
The proper fix is a kit with metal outputs etc. I epoxied the flaps in the holes and sorted it.
It's not too bad to fix if you can fit in the footwell to get to it.

Oh nearly forgot. The rear heating comes off the passenger side of the dual zone climate. So you should be able to work out which flap is the twat from that.

The faults are all well known and can be prevented with a bit of care (e.g. making sure you always use good fully synthetic oil).

This is my one - it's cost me plenty already in new DIC, new alternator, new wheel bearing, sump drop and bodywork repair (after I managed to rip the bumper off on a wall), but touch wood, it should be fine from here on in and give me years of tip runs and IKEA trips.

  • 6 months later...

I think I'm about 6 months in and despite costing a fortune to run I can't think of anything I'd rather be driving; the ridiculous power has completely corrupted me and driving anything else seems hopelessly pedestrian. Of course it's not all been without issue. I had to buy a new DI cassette at great expense and now I'm fighting with the ABS. I had all the warning lights come on and the fault code was one which apparently tends to indicate that the ABS module is borked. I had this rebuilt and although there is a degree of betterment (the speedo works again) still no ABS/ESP.

Before I send the module back does anyone in the North West have Tech 2? It would be nice to see if there is something else broken. There does seem to be full voltage to the ABS fuse; if I can't find someone with Tech 2 my plan B will be to try and find the PIN codes for the ABS connector block to see if I can find any voltage drop/open circuit wheel speed sensors.

Delphi or Wurth WOW will diagnose ABS issues on these, and give live data. You can do most things with it apart from changing settings.

9-5 Aero estates are for life's winners.

Don't get a brand new Saab original DIC, Neo Brothers do an equivalent to the original spec for half the price.

Get a Saab original DI if you are keeping the car, chinese copies are really bad news,i have just got a genuine new DI for £200 all in.

Cheers Barry, how’s yours going?

All good so far, just working through my list of fixes and niggles. Just the subframe bushes to do before starting on cosmetics. The bushes are pretty bad and make the car really unpleasant to drive with a bit of verve. Big clunk on startup too. Have half an idea to stick it in to the local garage to do, but don't know if I can bring myself to do it! Otherwise I love it! Need a dog guard ASAP... Bassett drool and ignition switches are a bad combination..

Cheers however I’m sorry to say it’s gone completely haywire today, instruments and heater going mental and engine and gearbox both in limp mode so I’ve had to book it in to see the Saab specialist who will start with Tech 2. I think it has to be lack of voltage somewhere but battery is good, alternator healthy and there seems to be full voltage at all fuseboxes. Earths checked and cleaned too.

Frustrating.
