Carlosfandango
So, I had one of these when my daughter came along many years ago and while i loved it - it was rather shite and I felt like a old bloke smoking around in it (late 30's at the time). The shite bit was that it was supremely unreliable - which caused consternations in the domestic household with a young baby. Starting problems & generally crap so I was soon shopping it in for something more sensible. I think that I got another W124 at the time, can't quite remember.. So, many years later & the daughter is now a teenager and I've switched to more reliable motors, like erm.... the P38 and I'm starting to enjoy cars again.I have a daily shitter three cylinder polo which is absolutely brilliant in almost every respect except for the fact that it's a three cylinder polo. There was quite possibly an over consumption of alcohol consumed on Saturday night last and an offer was put on a 'non runner' '97 Xj6 which had a full history and smallish miles (89k) and when I woke up on Sunday morning I felt different somehow.. I couldn't quite figure out what was wrong? The whippets were still skinny, the P38 was still riding on air and when I looked out the window, the Polo hadn't been stolen. Carlosfandango
However, when I was looking at the usual crap on the phone over breakfast, I see an email from a local small ads site seeing that my offer was accepted on a Jag. Bollocks. The pain soon subsided and I began to get rather excited. I had paid a pittance for it and had convinced myself that something rather excellent had happened. I was again taking risks with shite old cars that no one else wanted. I felt bloody great. Carlosfandango
The last one I had was the XJ8 but this was the much more reliable XJ6 and as a bonus, its a erm... 'sport'The seller connected up the battery with a set of jump leads to his daysul daily and tried to start. No luck so I'm suspecting a screwed fuel pump. However, I was able to check all the electrics and everything works, including the sunroof. SiC
Non start could also be a crank position sensor. Apparently these nom them pretty often. Also check that the check engine light stays on with the ignition on. If it goes off, it could mean the immobiliser is active. Broadsword
Snap! These cars really don’t like sitting around, which often leads to you one day trying to start it and it not firing up. Fuel pump definitely a candidate. I have heard of body control modules failing leading to non starting. There is a video or two on YouTube where someone deals with that problem. Might be worth considering. Carlosfandango and djimbob

Carlosfandango
So, as opposed to dragging a transporter behind the P38 on Saturday morning, for a 250kms round trip (I'm fucking CRAP at reversing with a trailer) managing small country roads, I've engaged a pal to collect this on his low loader - for just over half what I paid for the car itself. However, peace of mind and all that. I'm not going to purchase anything until I get it up on the ramp & have a proper poke around it to see what it actually needs, despite having spent about six million hours since I bought it looking at xj6 goodies online! Ahhh.. Middle aged porn. So much better than boobies. Well, not really but you know what I mean. So, still trying to establish the type of wheels that are on the XJR pictured above. Also, if anyone happens to have a nice XJR mesh grille for sale, shut up and take my money. In other CFD stable news, today I managed to buy two sets of alloys for other cars - the Range Rover is getting returned onto proper OEM Hurricanes and I found a tidy set of 15"s for the polo. It might make it slightly less hateful to own. Carry on. CFD uk_senator and Dirk Diggler

Carlosfandango
Evening shiters. Had this collected today. As mentioned, I had planned to drag the trailer behind the P38 but I've a great pal who is very reasonable and properly professional. Stupidly excited - it was delivered to a mates place, so going to see it tomorrow. Even though I don't have the keys. Planning to do a list of external things to be done. Carlosfandango
The day started well with only a slight hangover which soon passed following a walk with the sight hounds. Nothing better than a happy dog to put you in good form for the day. I went to view the new acquisition and started a list. In my excitement (despite having bought many may cars over the years) I didn't check the door locks when viewing. Back door, drivers side is not opening. The car needs a lot of paint. The roof is totally fucked, with the seller saying that it was Parker under a tree with lots of crows landing on it to play paint the Pollock. More like 'bollocks' if you ask me. Never seen anything like it. Looks like some sort of 'crazing' paint reaction. Suffice to say, the whole roof needs painting. Looks like the wings were painted, badly - can't for the life of me see why someone would go to the bother and then make such an arse of the job. The arches are generally good with just mall repairs needed at the tips The interior is generally good but the usual drivers seat bolster needs repair The dashboard is rather cool, couldn't turn it on as I didn't have the keys. Flippin love the sunglasses holder So, few things need doing, mostly paint and detail. Sunroof has a crusty blister that while annoying, doesn't cause concern. I'll do a list tomorrow. Carlosfandango
Sooo...After many hours of pissing around, turns out the fuel pump is good but there was a considerable amount of water in the fuel. There's two possibilities. One, there's a crap 'petrol station temporary cap' on the fuel filler and the drain line was blocked so the gulley where the fuel flap is (if that makes any sense) filled with water when the car was standing over the exceptionally shite winter we had and filled with water. The water seeped into the filler as the 'petrol station temporary cap' is not air / fluid tight. Or, some wanker poured water into the tank. I'll never know but what I do know is that the whole fuel system was full of water. A LOT of water. I'm lucky permanent damage was not caused. Fuel system flushed (with €50 worth of fuel!!) and car running sweet. Two injectors were bogey but appear to have come back to life. All coils working correctly and oil pressure good. So, following all that drama, a full service was carried out in anticipation of an NCT (MOT) and it's now booked for the 12th of September. Drove the car home today, left the P38 in the workshop, and I'm completely smitten. It is gorgeous. Swift, smooth and as luxurious as a late night bordello. Gave it a wash and it looks a lot less 'pikey' These are incredible cars and if possible, I'm going to improve this over time and hopefully hold onto it. Zelandeth
They are lovely old things. If it weren't for the complexity of them and tendency for parts to be rather pricey for my liking I'd have one on my drive most likely. The generation before this is my favourite though, and one of my biggest regrets car wise is not buying the L plated 3.2 Sport that a friend had. British Racing green, gold pinstripe, tan leather and red carpets. Scared the hell out of me first time I drove it on a damp road and suddenly had wheelspin on a straight road at 55mph when I put my foot down for an overtake... uk_senator

Carlosfandango
Car is running absolutely sweet and went for the NCT (MOT) but unfortunately failed on a poxy bulb! To be fair it's actually a good result - knowing that everything else is ok - just unfortunate that the bulb went when I was at the NCT centre. Where I get my cars tested, I've always had a positive experience with the testers. They are sympathetic to the old shite I normally show up with, in fact with the Jag, the tester spotted that I was trying to sort the bulb when in the queue and when he got it inside, spent ten minutes to sort, without actually fitting a new bulb. I thought that was pretty cool. I've done about 600 miles in it since i got it running and the more I drive it, the better it gets.Yes, I've a few bits to get for it but really just cosmetically. The passenger door is a bit of a bastard, seeing as it won't lock on the central locking - when I press the button, the doors lock/unlock/lock only to leave the passenger door unlocked - any ideas? I reckon I need to strip the door at least. The driver's side window is slowing down considerably when it gets to the bottom - so I usually stop it as I don't want to burn out the motor.Again, suggestions would be appreciated. The OEM stereo is flipping' deadly, except for a blown passenger door speaker so I'll defy have to sort that. When I go back for the retest on saturday (28 euro, robbing bastards) I'll have a fresh ticket so it will then be time to start saving for paint. richardmorris
The lacquer on my merc is going like that on the roof and rear quarter. Sort of crazy paving with parallel cracks. It looks like a previous repaint over ten years ago has given up. I’ve polished some out but it needs painting. Carlosfandango
Guest Hooli
The door lock might just need lubing, if the resistance is too high the motor probably stops to prevent burning itself out.
