New lad here. Owned plenty of chod before, some of which would be considered "classics" now I suppose but I've only ever spent over £1000 on one car and I still have that.

Previously owned shite includes 10x old BMWs from the E28 to the E46, Porsche 924, Audi 80, other old VWs, Alfa GTV, countless Volvos, an XJ40 and a few Rovers.

Current shite - note the inexplicable leaning towards metallic red paint.

Rover 45 TD - Bought blind off ebay for £300, I grew very attached to it so despite the fact that it's failed its MOT and has an unresolved overheating issue, I WILL be fixing it.

IMG_8651.jpg

Saab 900 - Current daily hack, this will be going as soon as the Rover is fixed. It's nice, too nice.IMG_9158.jpg

Jaguar XJ Executive - This was my grandad's, it's not going anywhere and is impeccably maintained. This is the reason I can only afford shite but I'd not have it any other way.IMG_9309edit.jpg

Anyway, hopefully I can offer mild entertainment on the forum during my stay. I'm also on the Facebook group and post my spotted shites there.

Hi my name is Wayne.

Just joined so I though I'd say hello.

I've got two cars, they are a MK5 Escort that's very late on a Y Reg and a boy racered ST170. I want to replace the ST170 with a scorp Ultima. I know it's probably a better can than my MK5 but I like the rarity of the mk5. Joined because I used to be in a few Facebook groups and want to be involved in a proper forum! I'm a ford addict and slimmed down the collection. Last year I sold a mk3 grannie and a mk1 mondy.

Cheers,

Wayne

Hello,  inaugural post was about to be made elsewhere but I thought I should see if there was one of these on the go first...

I recently started watching HubNut on youtube and found reference to this place through his videos.  Can't believe I've missed this, just shows what happens when you have a newish car to use daily and get distracted with stuff that isn't old cars for a year or so...

I have a long history of autoshite but some all of my standouts, in muddled order are:

1966 Hillman Imp

1972 Mini 1000

1981 Mini 1000 City

1982 Suzuki sc100

1973 VW 1303

*1970 VW 1300  First car I had after passing my test.

1984 VW Polo breadvan

1986 Nissan Sunny 1.6 GLXZTRTLXZ or something. PAS and a sunroof anyway.

*1972 VW Type 2 Devon conversion with an Alfa boxer engine so it goes better.

*1983 VW Scirocco CL.  Mid derustification/ restoration, has been in this state for some years...

*1988 VW Scirocco Scala that had been shortened 18" in the boot by an Isuzu Trooper just before I bought it.  Mouldy parts car. (front parts only)

1982 VW Golf Driver

1987 VW Passat Estate Topic.  The best car I've ever owned.  I loved it like no other,  Cost £77 and was brilliant for 3 years or so. Miss it years later.

1988 Merc W124 300TE

1955(!) VW Beach buggy of mostly Volksrod provenance. Horrific. Shite. Sold it 6 months before they announced pre-'60 MOT exemption...

1994 VW Passat Estate TD

1988 BMW 325i Touring

*1986 Audi Coupe Quattro.  Awaiting rust remediation and maybe some bits from the next car.

*1988 Audi 90 20v  Good for about a year but dings and shot suspenders/ brakes meant I moved on.  Kept it for the engine which might go into the above.

*1974 Landrover 88" petrol.   All weather daily and firewood chaser (when it has an MOT)

1990 Audi 80 2.6 Avant Quattro

*1985 VW 1200 (Mexican beetle)  Fair weather daily and the only car I've ever restored completely including paint. Not so shite.

*I still have these ones but only a few are viable any more - I have a tendency to think I'll find the time to restore or fix broken and rusty things one day...

Okay, that's all of it apparently except the two newish moderns I've been compelled to buy for high mileage work use in the last few years; Octavia VRS and more recently a 330d touring.  I have no real love for these cars.

I want a hydro Citroën so much it's now dangerous.  I don't think hanging around here is going to be good for me...

I didn't see this thread till after I made my first post.

I've never bought a car over 2K and only bought two for more than 1K, many far less than that in over 20 years of driving so it seems I may not be alone here :-)

Brief car history in rough order.

R reg Series III Landrover derv SWB

2x Mk5 1600cc Cortinas. Both total rot boxes. One ended up with front met blue, brazil brown rest with a vinyl roof. Turned out that was to cover up the fact it had been cut and shut when it had a value. It ended up as a field car until I snaped the gearbox off the engine!

A reg Vauxhall Carlton 1.8 Saloon

? reg 850 mini (borrowed while Carlton was fixed)

Y red Datsun Cherry New Coupe 1,3? - Field-car

? reg Rover SD1 V8 auto - Field car (some fun that was! but oh so rotten even 25 years ago)

Vindicator kit car.

A reg Mk1 Golf GTi Campaign 1.8 in silver. Fave car to date.

Then a change in circumstances led to.

G reg 205 NAD 5 door. £250

F reg Audi Coupe 1.8 in Cadbury's purple (cost 20 quid)

B reg rotten Aude Coupe 2.1 (cost 75 quid)

306 td Phase 1 in Miami blue

Audi 80 1.9 TD saloon in black.

ZX Volcane TD 5 door minter in Metallic green (sadly written off by a third party)

306 td saloon

306 td Phase 1 in red.

105 1.5 NAD that had an extremely violent ending.

Currently got a 405 SRDT in gun metal grey which I really quite like :-)

^ Wow! A SCTSH without any Volvos...! I didn't know such things existed!

Welcome in :-)

I've had Volvo by association if that counts.  As a child I was ferried about in the back of a 240 DL in powder blue which my mum loved but sold to....

An antiques dealer in Edinburgh, I kid you not.

I also welded up the sill/ footwell of a mates 240 GLT a few years back after being treated to volvovlovolvo snow driving to get to his shed for the aforementioned work.

My dad ran a string of Lancias until they pulled out of the UK at which point he went to Rover.  The Lancias made more of an impression than the Volvo but I may drift that way if I can wean myself off the motorway modern and get back to real motoring.

I have a propensity to keep returning to VAG because it was my first love and I lack imagination.  :-D

Posted in here a few days ago but all of my links were buggered because I'm thick, so reposting.

New member stopping by.  Fascinated by shite, don't have the space/money to run any proper shite but here's an introductory video to my car.  An 05 reg VW Golf MKIV Estate TDi 130PS (thankfully):

Dedicated members might spot my other half's car.  It's a Ford Focus MKII Studio.  Yes.  A Studio base model with a quoted 0-60 of about 14 seconds.  Nice to drive in all other respects though.  Not going to introduce it more than that, as it's not my car!

Hi all, I had no idea this thread existed! I was looking for an introduction section initially.

Anyway, hi!

I'm Ade from Merseyside. Never paid more than £1k for a car, average is about £300-400.

Particularly into older Ford's.

I tend to get bored easily, so in my 20 years of motoring I must have owned going on for 350 cars, in fact I almost had my insurance policy cancelled a couple of years ago because I changed cars that much they thought I was a trader!

Loving this site, found due to watching Ian's Youtube video's on his Invacar etc, so cheers Ian!

My next venture could possibly be a van/camper project so watch this space.

Good evening Autoshite, new to the forum, I found it through another forum (VW based) and have found it about elevenmillionty times more interesting, entertaining and down to earth than most other single marque sites.

I have a fleet of elderly VW's mainly water cooled nowadays, the dailys a MK4 glof which has various electrical issues that sometimes decide to not let me in but at 16 years young it still keeps smoking on.

Will hopefully be able to contribute more as time goes on!

  • 2 weeks later...

Best say hello really, given that I'm new round here.

Member of various other single marque forums, but find myself attracted to the diverse shite on here.

Long time VAG botherer, but can't stand the scene people with their pineappled nonsense, or even worse the merchant bankers who buy splitscreens for a millionty pounds and think they are cool hippies.

Shite to date includes the following gems*:

1982 Mk1 Golf Auto - a lacquer peeling vision in silver. Repeated HGF due to me an my dad not fully appreciating stretch bolts, and the reuse thereof.

1969 Beetle - brassic student motoring, with my very own structural* fiberglass floor. Sold on to a dreamer when one year the MOT man cottoned on that the patch repairs to the floor weren't actually metal...

1990 Mk2 Golf Driver 1.6 - suffered repeated FTP. Not as quick as I thought it should be, given that the twin headlight grill added 45 BHP at least. Sold to a neighbor who promptly scrapped muttering something about it being to dangerous.

1995 Omega 2.0l Poverty Spec - Bought from a dealer who cloned my card. Lovely, arrived in a waft of armchairy comfort wherever I went. Never seen so many blanking plates on  dashboard before or since. Developed a great quirk of engaging limp  mode at random intervals, normally at speed. No codes, nothing. Scrapped after one too many sudden loss of speed on motorway.

2006 Mk5 Golf 1.9TD - Company car interlude. Blew a turbo every 10,000 miles and ate rear tyres. Awful, but didn't care as not really mine. Clocked up 50k miles in 18 months, then moved company and had to give it back.

1999 Mk4 Golf Estate - given to me free by mate of a mate of a mate. Full of bits of cornish pasty and vomit when I picked it up. FTP at least once a month. Replaced everything on the engine, still FTP. Tried to weigh it in, but they made me pay to leave it there.

1985 T25 1.9 petrol - bought using the proceeds of a bucket for donations at my wedding. Bought it, changed the oil and  later that week drove it 3,000 miles to Norway on honeymoon. Had it 5 years, but it rusted away. Sold for more than I paid for it with a week left on the MOT. Bonus.

2002 Astra Club estate 1.6 8V - mistake. Daily commuter vehicle, 60 miles per day. Thermostat failed routinely, but it was behind the cam belt. Ended up with a renault 5 thermostat zip tied in the top hose. Went for scrap as it need new tyres but it wasn't worth it.

1970 Beetle - came from Blackpool, had that rust that only salt air can produce. Wifes daily until arrival of third child. Constant source of dismay to the world that we would put our children in it. Somehow got a clean sheet MOT on it, flogged it to a man who didn't look underneath. Result.

1973 T2 Westfalia conversion - in original condition. Slow, cold and constant FTP. As a family we now don't even like camping. 6 year old genuinely believed you could only come home from holidays on a big yellow taxi. Currently being sold, but having to deal with eBay test pilots and other general low life.

Now down to one single piece of modern shite, where I believe I have excelled myself - a 2017 Citroen C3 Picasso in Metallic Purple.  It looks dire, but the only car that met the company car allowance scheme, number of sprog seats, wifes wish to drive something small and my overwhelming wish to pilot something that looks like a massive quality street.

I'm after my next project now though, so am looking at petrol vans under £2k which have no or limited scene tax. Very tempted by a 3.2l V6 chevy that apparently only needs minor* welding for MOT...... Limited wish list, needs to have heating, 5+ seats and do at least 70mph if anyone has any suggestions....

Alright Geezers,

Scotch shite enthusiast here.

Pleased to be part of this cracking community you have here and hope I can contribute something.

The car in our household is frustratingly un-shite. It's a low mileage, last off the line Peugeot 407 with pretty much 0 quirks. I am however on the lookout for a second motor for us and planning for it to be a wee bit more interesting (shite), so hopefully some tales to come.

Cheers!

Hello everybody I thought I would say hello! I have lurked for quite a while and enjoy reading about old things car related on here, and people's adventures with them, plus the humour (and can relate to some of the sad things too)

I like looking after old things too and will occasionally post a picture and a bit of text if I'm doing something which may be of interest , like I enjoy seeing random stuff on here.

I have a few old vehicles which I do all my own work on, and am congratulating myself on getting all the mots falling in spring and summer when it's warm enough to work on them . Here's a pic of my trusty daily having a bit of pre mot work as it expired last week!post-20789-0-93855200-1521378618_thumb.jpeg
