After the constant battle with all those things for years with the white one I’m really enjoying this one. Driving it always felt quite low down on the to do list, and I’m probably a bit of a worrier at heart so I like being a bit more confident in this one. That white one fought me and always played dirty when I just wanted to learn fun things about fixing cars, this one does nice things like only leaking in really obvious places that are an easy fix, or having bolts that undo when I put a spanner on them. Or lights that start working again when I fit a new bulb rather than needing to get an auto electrician involved. It’s definitely a bit slower than the white one though so I sometimes have to leave a minute or two earlier.

I've never worked on another 924, so I don't know if mine's fighting more than they usually do. There are still some, er, legacy electrical issues, though. I'm buggered if I can get the NS headlight to work consistently at the moment and the pop up lights don't go up or down. I suspect that may just need a new relay, but I've been so busy with other stuff I haven't had time to look into it. In fact that's the main problem with this car, it's just been neglected for the last few years because I've got too much other stuff on, fixing (trying to fix) other cars, house, kids, etc.

I think having one that isn't a bastard to you all the time is your reward for all the work you put into the white one. It certainly seems well deserved. One of these days I'm going to attempt a front valance repair like you did - if there's any front valance left by the time I get round to it.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been reading AS for a while, but not contributed. I almost bought a van from @BeEP a few months back, but struggled with logistics at the time.

I've been self employed for most of my career, and normally used vans to do everything. However, I've had a few cars for various reasons.

This was great. I think it was the 2.5 10v version. I bought it after my first divorce, thinking that dating while only having five Iveco Dailys might be a hindrance. It soon became clear that a battered 850 wasn't much of a help either.

It was replaced with this:IMG_1505.thumb.JPG.364e6a923ffc8e3ea933e5a37ea768c9.JPG

An ex taxi, 2.0Hdi auto. A surprisingly good car. I kept it for a couple of years and sold it for about what I'd paid for it.

At the time, I had a few of these, which I used to deliver furniture across the UK and Northern Europe for a number of customers.

Great vans. The rear calipers used to seize for a pastime, and I became quite adept at changing them.

My little forklift made life much easier.

This was an impulse purchase. It was fun while it lasted, but constant battles with emissions and an incredibly high tick over made it a pain in the arse. I sold it to a mate, who sorted it for pennies, and ran around in it for a couple of years, just to rub salt into the wound. It was lovely while it worked.

I then bought a very scruffy Ford Ranger pick up specifically for a job I was working on at the time.

It did its job, mostly running about in Holland and Germany. My wife absolutely loathed it, and once I'd finished that job, it had to go.

By this time, I'd become an employee, rather than being self employed. To celebrate, I bought this beauty:

This is one I regret parting with. It was a T5 auto, £600 tax, and about 23mpg. I didn't care, I loved it. I became self employed again, and needed a nasty van to run about in.

Consequently:

It was an old friend's fishing van. The first summer I owned it, it would be absolutely full of bluebottles every warm day. Mike had spilled loads of maggots in it, and the bastard things were the bane of my life for a good while. I hit a pheasant, and it wore the gaffa tape for a good few years. The rear locks didn't work, it was a pig to start from cold, but I kept it for five years, I think. I needed a van that would take an 8x4 sheet, and tried to sell this on eBay. After interaction with all sorts of idiots, I was at the scrapyard one day and asked what they'd pay for the van. The dog and I walked back home, £290 in my pocket. I'd paid £400 for the van and abused it for about five years.

In the background to the right of the Scudo is this:IMG_2795.thumb.JPG.ee1b35aa7255a2ebab00452cf1900392.JPG

It's a 1993 Hymer S700. Despite the ungainly looks, it's a fantastic motorhome. Built on the Mercedes T1 410d chassis, it's given me, my ex wife and my son loads of happy memories. We've been to France, Germany and Spain in it, as well as countless weekends away in the UK. I'm hoping to have a Viking funeral in this thing.

For a few years, I also had an older and slightly larger Hymer, which I sold to a customer.IMG_20170312_105638.thumb.jpg.f9aa0f2a062de292c47dd78727771c6c.jpg

It was also a great van, but I preferred the later one, with the om602 engine and auto gearbox to the om617 and manual. The new owner is very happy with it, which is a good thing.

Last summer, a different customer gave me this, for nothing:IMG_20210825_172046.thumb.jpg.ccc56611292ef9b1c976a8d5e0cbd09e.jpg

Sadly, I was diagnosed with incurable cancer shortly afterwards, and I sold it almost immediately. It was great to drive, and the brakes weren't as bad as I feared. It needed a lot of welding, and I wasn't up for the task at the time. It would have been a great successor to the Scudo, and I'm annoyed that I sold it.

I'm still alive, and I've still got incurable cancer, but I'm down to a Transit Custom and the Hymer S700 now. If there's a C15 about, I'd have it in a heartbeat.

Hello, all. This place seems to cover a lot of the random crap I find interesting. And its comforting to see I'm not alone in the buy the cheapest example, spend too much and sell at an overall loss process of buying and selling cars.

Congratulations, that's very much my buying model too. Underdogs ftw!

better say hello too.I've terrible history of buying bangernomic style cars - Subaru outback 3.0 now, low milage at just over one light second, before that a purple S500 W220 which became shed of the week on PistonHeads when I sold it. I've had better stuff too, MX5 turbo, Caterham, Renault Alpine GTS turbo, 420G P5B etc etc but now down to one car due to ULEZ and a couple of Mallock clubman's cars. Most of the time in London I just use my motorbike. It's by far the best mode of transport here

If you're interested and the website allows me I'll upload a photo of my Mallock B Sport. Clubmans cars are the most Autoshite of all racing cars. Mine is about 45 years old with an Escort engine and gearbox, a BMC back axle with Ford internals, Triumph Herald uprights, and a space frame of half inch square section. Fast but cheap* to run.

Looks like I may have forgotten to introduce myself on here! Well, according to my profile history I haven't made any posts (though pretty sure I made a few?).
So here goes,
I'm Rob, currently an avid beliver in the theory of bangernomics. Since selling my mk2 Skoda Octavia at the start of lockdown for £700, I've progressed through a mk2 MX-5 (wife's choice), bought for £750 with 12months MOT, sold for £750 with  weeks MOT and sold the hardtop seperate 😅, got a Jaguar S-type that needed some work for £1100 and made a profit on that too, then had my first wrong move and picked up a 2.2D Avensis in a hurry which promptly failed the MOT on too much to list 4 months later. So with the scrap money from that got a 1998 Corolla 1.3GS, 3 owners from new, 98k and most of the service history. Looking forward to seeing other peoples projects/sheds and seeing what my next buy will be!
