Alloys are something you take for granted these days, years ago when they were expensive people just resigned themselves to hubcaps. That’s assuming they didn’t get nicked, there used to be a stall on the market in St Austell (I think) that used to sell them. I wondered where they had got them all from.

A decent set of wheels transforms a car. They don't have to be alloys, a good clean, well painted set of steelies can look look great. Having said that I've put alloys on all mine. What can I say, I'm a wheel tart.

These were actually standard on the Favorit, and I was a bit surprised to see them pop up on the first page of this thread, but mine are painted white.

The Felicia did come with Skoda alloys but I was offered these Ronal Turbos at a price I couldn't refuse.

And the Triumph has Dolomite Sprint wheels.

These haven't been mentioned yet but are, I think, a classic wheel of the 1970s. Very few cars had alloy wheels as standard at the time. I think these and the larger Stag/2500S and the Ford RS alloys all have the same look, polished ally with black painted inserts just screams The Professionals and The Sweeney. Love them.

Stag/2500S.

Ford RS.

EDIT. as you can see I got the Felicia and Triumph mixed up. But you can see that, I don't need to redo it do I?

Maestro alloys (optional extra)

There was a similar wheel with the MG logo, but I prefer the Austin centre cap.

mine had the plain cap with no logo- i had argument with tyre fitter who was convinced they were 14" "MG wheels mate" - "no they're 13" vp wheels"- nah mate they'll be 14s- oh they are 13 neva seen them before

The Vauxhall 'star' wheels on Cavalier Commanders and police spec mark 3 Astras:

Thames Valey had Commander wheels on a couple of dark metallic green mk2 2.0 Cavaliers as response cars in about 93/4. They were saloons and looked the business flying around at night.

In true Autoshite fashion, I'm not actually going to respond properly to this thread and give my one and only personal favourite best ever wheel opinion, rather use this as a platform to bosh up a load of images of nice wheels instead. In fact, I'm just going to show my fleet's wheels, most of which I'm quite happy with.

First up, Commodore.

Like Norfolknweigh, there are certain cars that require certain wheels and nothing else - IMO, an early Commodore should wear these in 95% of cases, in my dictatorial wheel world. Bonus of previous owner having added trim rings and 8 ply super squishy van tyres - the size of black circles are just as important as the wheels.

Quite how a 1980's shopping car can pull off 15" rims and not look like a Hotwheels toy is beyond me but Peugeot somehow acheived it with the 1.9 GTI. Archive photo of when it looked slightly presentable.

On the other scale, PSA dropped 2" in diameter with the Visa GTi but pulled it off. It's a very fussy wheel design with diamond cut face, grey painted inserts and black painted bits but all the better for it - if they were in good condition, which mine aren't. Hence small size archive photo, again.

When we bought the Clio. Urgh.

After we spent waaaay too much money importing a set of Ronal Turbos and buying a set of Michelin PS3s, since we dropped an inch in diameter in the process. Money very well spent though, I reckon.

Land Rover as bought. Not my taste.

As it sits now. Not the greatest photo but you get the idea.

I'll be honest, the Cavalier looks awful without its centre caps but try finding a set in NZ, or anywhere, actually. Seriously toying with the idea of replacing them but those wheels are so much a part of Mk 2 SRIs before the 130 era that it doesn't feel right.

Finally, one from the archives. LOVE Cosmics but I bought too small a profile tyre, so with an Imp on standard height front suspension, the effect was not great. I think the only aftermarket wheels that look better on an Imp are wobbly webs but I can't find a pic online to back this up.
