What happened to your former shite?

In no particular order....

Audi 90 Quattro - H611FBC - no longer exists on any system. Did see it briefly on eBay about a year after I sold it.

Scirocco Storm - B44 KPN - sold in in March 2006, it seems to have had an MOT until 2010, taxed until 2011 (although 14 months later, naughty!) but since disappeared. Wasn't in regular use and seems to have regularly gone without MOT for a few months until it vanished.

Polo G40 - J711KLY - bought in 2002, got exported to Ireland in 2005.

Polo Coupe - K708XCW - bought as a stop-gap in March 2006, destroyed the engine on the way home thanks to a slipped timing belt. Sloshed another engine in, sold it the month after, hilariously it lasted another 4 years with my cack-handed work holding out. Although later in the year when it went for an MOT there was an advisory for oil leak and insecure wiring.

Astra GTE convertible KIW8558. Bought as a stolen-recovered non-runner, did a bit of half-arsed work, realised there was no way on earth I had the talent to weld the sills, sold it, angry man bought it back to me when he realised it was fucked, sold it again as a breaker to resurrect a vandalised example with slashed hood/seats and smashed windows etc.

VW 1303S Beetle - PPC434L - Helped load it onto the scrap truck having taken off anything I could take off. Rusty as fuck.

Mk3 Golf GTI - J434WJH - bought it off SportyShite, sold it to Cobbler's mate for the engine with two days of MOT left because rusty as fuck.

BMW E36 318i - M812WYC - Bought it off a mate's dad who loved it to bits, promised him I'd look after it, sold it to one of DaveDorson's mates who left it on some double yellows near Liverpool, I got a letter saying it was going to be crushed shortly after sending off the V5. Has now vanished off all systems.

Seat Leon TDI - Y814GHP - Sold it in 2013, exported in 2015. Who on earth is exporting 190,000 mile Seat hatchbacks?

Volkswagen Fastback - VWE218L - it was in a right state when I sold it, seems to be on SORN somewhere. I might know someone who might know someone who might know where it is, and I'm having silly thoughts about getting it back and fixing it up.

Volkswagen Fastback WWM702M - sold it to a dude who wrote for a VW magazine, saw it at a show a few months later but then vanished about the same time the magazine folded. Hasn't been seen since, not taxed since and the MOT history is blank.

Essentially there's only one car I've ever owned that's still on the road, and that's a 2009 Ford Focus. One's on SORN, one has just vanished, and the rest are BEANCANS.

Most of the following are Citroens - surprise, surprise.  I started by borrowing* my mother's Hillman Avenger but, following a small inheritance from my grandad, I decided to buy my own car which was...

Dyane 6 HNP408T: bought while I was in the Upper Sixth, bit of a knacker considering it was only six years old, with gearbox issues I never managed to get sorted.  Lost it on a hill covered in black ice and bounced off a parked Spitfire.  Traded in for...

GS1220 Club TUY21V: had this for five years, though while I was away at Geordie Poly doing student things the Mothership got more use out of it than I did.  Took it over when I graduated and moved to London and Sussex.  This happened...

25415_380231103260_2164299_n.jpg?_nc_cat

...in Brighton when I T-boned an off-duty copper who shot those lights on red.  That took some clearing up, and eventually passed over the desk of the Chief Constable of Sussex Plod.  Anyway, the GS was very dead and was replaced by...

BX 16RE B319YKO: bought at night, in the rain, in a pub car park, with an envelope full of £50 notes.  I know, right.  Great motor, with the tweedy seats and the rolling-drum instruments.  Should have kept it, but I was a 24yo weapons-grade moron and decided to lumber myself with even more debt by trading it after three months for...

BX 19GTi D135BLT: lovely car, went like stink, insurance was crippling and I was commuting between Barnes and Slough.  Then I was made redundant and had to sell at a big loss and get bailed out by the Bank of Mum & Dad (bless them).  Purely as a stopgap, I perused Auto Trader and spent 700quid on...

Dyane 6 PMR979Y: ...which, 28 years later, is resting (again...) in the garage not 20ft from where I write.  KEEPER.

1931128_32924803260_5778_n.jpg?_nc_cat=0

A few years later, I celebrated the end of my teacher training with the purchase of...

Saab 96 V4 JTD179P: a 'Silver Jubilee' edition, #148 of 300.  I kept it for a year, then sold it on for what I paid for it; last I checked it was still on SORN.  The Dyane was pressed back into daily use but in the summer of 1995 we were invited to a wedding in south-west France; neither the Dyane nor Domestic Management's 106 were considered suitable as we would be bringing her sister back with us.  Which logistical challenge led to...

Volvo 240GLT DEY946X: Yes, clearly a 14yo Swedish tank bought out of the local paper a week before departure was the ideal choice.  Tame Mechanic was reasonably confident it would make it to Aquitaine and back which it did - via a tour round the Le Mans circuit - despite losing overdrive regularly.  Especially when warm, which it was: 42degC.  Did I mention the black leather seats?

Somewhat incredibly (I thought) my mk3 Granada Cosworth ended up with a young girl of about 18 or 19. It went through a couple of other owners between me and her in the space of a couple of months and then showed up on the fb page.

I mentioned I was the previous owner and she messaged me asking about its history, sadly the folder with every receipt since it’s birth had gone missing between leaving me and arriving at her. Noticed recently it has been re-MOT'd and some pics have appeared at a show of it looking rather splendid, she has even replaced the rocker cover baskets which I’d shied away from all my ownership (and it’s not just me being lazy, they are potentially a whole load of trouble because ford never intended them to be replaced)

First car, Rover 216SLi M27HAB - bought and HGF'd after four miles, recovered home and repaired in my garage with Old Man. Ran for 4k then sold a year ago to someone local, when I offered him my Volvo in March he put it up for sale. Not sure who owns it now but still has tax and MOT, but it has some rot so not sure if another is forthcoming, we shall see next month.

Second car, Volvo 740 GLE D832YHG - bought last August from an old boy locally for £650. Ran it for six months then had no end of grief with the wheels and tyres, combined with high running costs I lost my rag with it and sold it to a bloke from Newcastle who wanted it as a utilitarian classic. A bit anal and tried to tell me it had HGF as the flame trap was clogged (so seeping oil from the HG) and the exhaust was blowing out condensation, but came up trumps in the end. Drove it back north and never heard from him again - it passed its MOT last month.

36395796793_d2d7c149ff_b.jpgUntitled by max_burton, on Flickr

Third car, fourth gen Honda Prelude 2.0i K940XFX - bought on a frustrated whim as an escape from the Volvo. Never gelled with it; it had knackered front suspension, and ignition issues that strangled the power, so it ended up spending the best part of three months on my drive not being used - when it was finally fixed I realised it was tiring to drive a long way, and also it was a bit clinical to drive, meaning you went everywhere too fast and it was far too easy to speed, and too easy to just chuck round corners to an extent it wasn't even fun. Expensive to insure too, but surprisingly good on fuel at least.

Put it up for sale on here and sims00 of this parish bought it within a few hours, then after a month or so sold it to SRi05, who still has it as far as I know.

The Rover I have now is ex-Bramz, however I don't think he used it much as he bought it with next to no MOT and only put one on it a few days before I collected it.

I'm not even going to try to list them because we'd be here forever (130-odd) but it's pretty safe to assume most of them have been bean cans a couple of times already.  Nice to see that Ratdat has my old Cherry, that was a lovely little car, though ultimately, "little" just doesn't work for me.  My most recent sale, of course, was the Giffer Rover, which went to Countryman of this parish.  I'm still waiting for him to post up the collection thread, lol.  I like selling cars here, it means they have a chance of survival.  Saab convertible, anyone? ;)

Opel Manta GTE no1; stolen and crashed a few weeks after purchase. Dead.

Opel Manta 1.8GT; sold to a random on the OMOC. Current status unknown but I should have a look.

Opel Manta GTE No2; Sold as a project. "A weekends work" and it's still SORN ten years later.

Nissan Bluebird 1.6LX; sold to a friend of panadamonium IIRC. Status unknown.

Nissan Silvia Turbo; sold to a random again unfinished project. I think he got it on the road eventually. Still salty about that one....

E30 318 Touring; scrapped due to rot. What a piece of shit that was.

Escort 1.6 LX 16v; scrapped due to the usual rear rot. Shane, it was a very faithful car in the time I had it.

Fiesta Flight 1.3; scrapped again due to rot. Never liked it but it served me faithfully.

More later...

So... the Volvo lasted a couple of years as the daily before rust and complete failure of the overdrive saw it relegated to the garage then swapped - in a spectacular deal with a nutter crazy man eccentric from Horwich, who wanted the 240's leather and 2.3 motor - for two vanloads of 2CV/Dyane parts.

The Dyane became sole transport again, following a change to a galvanised chassis, but was becoming very tired bodywise.  Then Domestic Management traded her 309 for a K11 Micra; needing transport, I chatted to the salesman (who we knew) and followed her home in the Peugeot, having saved Ken the bother of shoving it through the auctions.

Speaking of which, it's Saturday morning in Cannock...

The majority of mine are now dead. There's a handful that might have survived the great weighbridge in the sky or that I'd even like back...

6111611551_c455fe4cfc_z.jpg

Sold to the James Hull collection and subsequently to JLR so still around albeit seemingly never used since I sold it. Hoping it might turn up at a Brightwells Auction when JLR dispose of a few more of the collection.

9603122342_e1454c0142_z.jpg

Proper R11 Electronic with everything working. Sold it when they were worth buttons and I'd lost my old car mojo. Still around though. Unlike this, which sort of replaced it...

8619091670_a85ee6e24c_z.jpg

Alfa seemingly died in scrappage in around 2009. Body was mint and mechanically it was pretty good after I'd spent way too much on it. Electrical bits were exactly as you'd expect though.

Technically not mine but I really liked this one. First car I'd been able to pick and spec to how I wanted it. Did 28k in the six months I ran it. Deceased now though.

9599888687_e87e063f5f_z.jpg

Amazingly, R11 Electronic #2 is still about too. Recently seen on eBay looking sorry for itself.

8622460448_6c3d9d2d54_z.jpg

The one I most regret selling is this one. Seemingly dead now but if it wasn't I'd have it back in an instant.

As for a few others. Nothing but memories and the odd photo now :(

Panda, scrapped for terminal rust.

Fiesta, sold, buyer binned it later.

Saxo, some amoeba smashed in to it and killed it.

Rover, erm I crashed it. Not badly damaged, just not worth much.

406, sold locally. Not seen it for a bit.

407, traded in at a garage in Bristol.

407, traded in at a garage in king's Lynn.

508, traded in at a garage near king's Lynn.

Rcz, well we're going to do about 1000 miles in a week in it very shortly. If it doesn't piss me off it can stay a bit longer.

Already had it about 14 months which is good for me!

1.1969 HB Viva SL, DVW308G, bought from a scrapyard and ought to have stayed there, it certainly ended up back in one.

2.1970 Cresta Deluxe DGN978H, bought in a fit of enthusiasm which conveniently allowed me to overlook terminal rot. Last seen in the pits at Mildenhall pre-70 2008, but didn't race as it wouldn't run properly.

3.1959 Austin A99, NGV324. Still got it 19 years later.

4.1993 Maestro Clubman turbo diesel, L29TGF. Shit its head gasket after four months and given away, couldn't care less what happened in the end. Total piece of shit.

5.1970 Ford Capri 1600XLR YUE579J. Bought from a workmate because he was going to scrap it otherwise. The number plate at least survives, now on a lhd RS2600 replica.

6.Lada Riva, M296WBH. One deceased owner from new and I thrashed the poor thing to death which I now feel really guilty about. Scrapped in 2003.

7. 1963 Wolseley 6/110 Mark 1,AOR385A. The one which taught me that you shouldn't buy before you've driven it. Still around somewhere and hopefully more pleasant to pilot than when I had it.

8.1970 Vauxhall Viva HB SL, FMM790J. Accepted in lieu of a debt and not a bad little thing despite a nagging fuelling issue. Last seen in Classic Car Weekly classifieds about seven years ago

9.1972 Cresta deluxe automatic MRT568K. One owner from new until he died in 1977, bought from his widow's estate in 2003.Went up north in the end but not motd since 2012 so might well be dead now. Hope not.

10. 1998 Citroën Xantia 1.8 8valve base model, R680AAD. Lovely motor, used for three years but got stolen whilst in storage after I got bored with it.

11.1975 Rover 3500S, KRO287P. Only had it a few months, got offered a ridiculous profit so off it went. Apparently the chap I sold it to still has it.

12.1989 BMW 318i,G436TYR.Absurdly cheap and I couldn't resist it. Enormous fun for a year then regretfully weighed in when I didn't have anywhere to put it. Of course E30 prices doubled that very same evening.

13.1996 Renault Megane 1.6 saloon, P219SUU. I hated this on sight but it was cheap and legal when that was all I needed. Excellent fuel economy but an utterly miserable piece of shit in literally every other respect. It actually looked marginally better when some dopey mouthbreathing cow drove into the side of it at Boreham services. It failed its mot in 2009 and I was delighted to have a reason to part company with it. Sold to man from Basildon who wanted it for his wife. I can only assume he didn't like her too much.

14.1998 Rover 620i,R483LFP. Bit of a stopgap, they're lovely motors but this was a shit heap. Managed to last eight months then sent to Whip St. in Ipswich. Last seen wobbling off down their yard on a forklift.

15. 1994 Rover 416SLI,M49WVA. My birthday present from my long - suffering partner. Managed a couple of years then blew its head gasket at a time when low finances sent it off to Whip St to join the 620 and enjoy anew future as a toaster.

16. 1990 Volvo 740 GL G78OGP. Bought drunk over the phone in the pub off Gumtree about four years ago and it's been a splendid old thing. Including the purchase price and excluding fuel I don't think it's cost me a grand in four years and easily 80,000 miles. Truly wonderful and I have no idea what could possibly replace it.

I have decided you all need to know my car owning history. It started in 1964 and has not finished yet, but is sadly restricted to one car now because pensioner.

First requirement was a licence, passed by driving round the block in a Beetle. the local traffic police officer took the test and didn't bother much because he new I had been driving for some time.

No 1 was a 1939 Ford Perfect (to me !) It was light Green and became mid Blue during my time as a mates father painted cars. This was a 25 year old car and completely different to drive and maintain compared to a 25 year old today, think of a 1994 model now.

post-2915-0-25476700-1532418270_thumb.jpg

Next was a small luxury car, a Humber no less ! well a Humber 10 which was a way to get around import restrictions here. Actually a Hillman Minx with a different grille and badging to allow the importers to get more cars in. But I was in the world of leather and carpets, even if it suffered horribly from fuel vaporisation meaning it usually took 20 minutes before it would start after a stop for a pee. We could never cure it  :? It was autoshite Brown inside and out.

 post-2915-0-69130700-1532418290_thumb.jpg

Next a retro car. A 1955 Ford Popular, so forgettable I have had forgotten to include it. It was light Green.

post-2915-0-01181800-1532418322_thumb.jpg

After that came a car owned between me and Mother. a 1964 Triumph Herald in Gunmetal.By this time I was 16/17 (ish) so ready for my first car crash.

Driving alongside the railway watching a steam special so totally disinterested in what was on the road. Some idiot in front of me decided he wanted to turn right into his driveway so stopped because of oncoming traffic. Me the expert swung the wheel to the right and hit the brakes. Anyone who has had a Herald knows what the car did next because of swing axles, but remember the oncoming traffic which was a Mini van. It averted the rolling motion by embedding itself in the left side of the Herald. then to stop a roll in the opposite direction, pushed it into a tree. As this was about 1964 it was repaired and lived on until 1970 brought a replacement.

post-2915-0-95466300-1532418407_thumb.jpg

By the time this was all over it was time to go and live in Sydney to experience the real world.

The first thing a kid from NZ needs in Sydney is transport, so a 1955 Vauxhall Velox was purchased from a reposession yard. It was in the blue and white as in this photo, had nothing wrong with it and did lots of long trips to outback NSW etc.

At the end of its time with me it started jumping out of top gear but was bought by a workmate who didn't worry about that. A replacement LHS rear door was also fitted, in glorious white, I cannot remember why but not accidental.

post-2915-0-62906700-1532421025_thumb.jpg

The V was replaced mostly because a regular customer of the garage where I worked offered me his car if I wanted it. He was buying a new Holden (1967) and had been offered $100 for it by the dealer. It was 10 years old, one owner, with 10,000 miles covered. Give me $100 and it's yours was the offer and I could not refuse. So I became the owner of a 1957 Holden Special in the exact colours as the photo.

This was THE car. I had it for some time and it was taken on the huge trip, done with a mate from NZ.

Trip was from Sydney to Northern Queensland and then West across to Mt Isa then further West and North to Darwin, Even the main roads were dirt then so the driving was pretty interesting at times as there had been some rain, many bogged cars were passed.

Of course once reaching Darwin, the only way was South, so off to Alice Springs we went. Not far out of Alice I drove through a washout too fast and the oil pressure light came on signifying that a rock hat put a gash in the sump. so we waited. Fairly soon a chap in a Landrover came along, he was able and good enough to tow us into The town. The sump was repaired by filling the gash with Araldite while lying underneath. It worked !!! Car repaired so off to Ayers Rock (aka Uluru nowadays). A bit of climbing about then back to the Alice because we hab made an odd decision.

Put the car in the train to Adelaide and enjoy life. For some reason it was cheaper to travel First class than 2nd if you had a car on board. That was a memorable trip because it was on the old Ghan train with top quality German rolling stock from about the 1930's. We had a lovely sleeper with all facilities for the two or three day trip. One of my "life highlights"

Anyhows off at Adelaide then across South Aus and NSW back to work in Sydney.

Some time later I met a drunk driver who forgot to stop at a stop sign and caused my lovely but well used Holden to do a complete flip and die lying on it's side on a footpath. The only ftp on that trip other than said sump was a broken fanbelt.

post-2915-0-33035400-1532421067_thumb.jpg

A new car was needed so I bought an Aussie oddity. A Wolseley 24/80 six. Colour as per photo below. A junior Farina Wolseley with a B series six. To get the 24 start with a 1600 b series and add two cylinders to get 2400 cc.

At last back to leather and carpets, now with wood trim.

I enjoyed the difference, but having now moved to Canberra and earning serious cash (about $12,000 +)  a visit to a dealer in fine Brit sourced NEW cars was in order

post-2915-0-81107400-1532421103_thumb.jpg

So with $ 2000.00 of that easy money in my hand and it now being 1970 I took my Wolseley to the local BMC/BL dealer and purchased new. A Mini K 1100 in light green with 2 optional extras, a radio and HEATER. The 1100 engine was fine in that car giving it good performance. the car was well fitted out like a Cooper and comfortable with hydrolastic suspension. Doors were Aussie specials with wind up windows and opening quarterlights . I liked it ! This did me well until the decision was made to go to the UK for a while

And the all-important Kangaroo badge

post-2915-0-36006600-1532421213_thumb.jpg

Mini sold on and I needed transport for a few months.

So bought a 1964 Ford Falcon, complete with very tired motor and 2 speed auto trans. Yep ! 2 speeds were enough then, but this one was special, it hated hills and would slow down and stop when the trans said enough. A couple of minutes and it was away again so no problems. I had it for a month or two and someone took it away before I left. Photo below.

Thats it for now, more to come tomorrow, or when I feel like it.

Remenber these photos are Googles, not the actual subjects.

Forgot to post a pic of the 1975 Mini that’s hopefully still retiring over in the states:

Here it is on British soil in the early 90s - the tent fitted in the Mini and the Mini fitted in the tent.

I had that exact same tent. Sold as a 3 man but only really good for 2.

Beetle - dead

Imp - dead, bridged it myself

A35 - dead, bridged by my mate after I sold it to him.

Minis, various, too many to remember.  All gone except one has "survived" by being ringed.

Zephyrs/Zodiacs - all gone except one, my favourite, which still lives somewhere nearby.

Pontiac - gone, sold to a bloke who left in the garden for the kids to wreck.

Chevette - gone off radar

Opel Ascona - ditto.

Granadas, various, all gone.   One of them died hard though, I was actually very sad to hear of its eventual demise.   Got written off twice in my ownership and went through 3 or 4 more keepers!

Fiat 500 - can't remember the plate so not sure of its fate.  I rather think it would have survived because they became gold plated the day after I sold it.

BMW 316 - dead.

Morris 1800 - was around until a few years ago, now not listed.

Morris Oxford - saw it the other day, I hope it is not as rotten as it was when I sold it a couple or three years ago....

Bedford CF Ambulance.   Still teetering on the edge of doom - literally, it was hanging over some earthworks in a local scrappy last time I saw it.

Mercedes W116 - popped up on Ebay once or twice but since off radar.

Mercedes 260E - ended up as a diesel taxi in Ghana.

Mercedes 280E - drove off into the sunset but not a lot further.

Ford Cortina - it had one foot in the grave when I bought it, not surprisingly it fell in soon afterwards.

Edit - forgot Citroen GSA.   Newest car I ever owned (in terms of age when bought) and one of the shortest-lived.

Also forgot motorbikes -

C102 Honda x 2 - both long gone although lecky start was fine on each until the end!

CB125S Honda, gorn.

Suzuki Invader - sold in bits after threatening to restore it.

XS650, likewise.

Triumph bitsa - went back to bits.

YDS7 Yamaha - most fondly remembered of my fringed leather jacket days and the bike I did the most riding on.  Saw it just once outside a launderette where I was doing the weekly wash after yet another sleepless night rowing with the first missus.   Nearly got on it and rode back to Cornwall.....Now no longer listed.

Talbot Solara Minx- paid the Taronis to scrap it

Mk1 1.8 diesel Focus - tragically killed when I skidded it into the median a month after passing my test

Mk1 1.8 Laguna RT - failed MOT on rust, given to a mechanic to pass on to his banger racing mate in lieu of some services which the guy never provided.

Mk3 Mondeo 2.0 derv - traded in for a woeful Tourneo

Woeful Tourneo - turbo exploded, non economical repair, sold on

Mk1 Megane cabrio x2 - sent to the bridge

Good Tourneo - sold on while it still retained some value

Volvo 340 I got a bit wayward and got bridged. i still regret this.

Volvo 340 II was never that good anyway but new shocks, tank and rad would have kept it going. Had some creative* wiring courtesy of a previous owner.

Both of these, had I known better at the time, were completely fixable and I still love the 300. They've all rusted into their own shadows then been drifted into the grave by now.

Honda cg125 went to a girl in Portsmouth one Christmas when I needed the money and looking at its MOT history didn't survive long.

Skoda Octy had a number of faults but never went wrong just wasn't worth fixing come MOT time.

Gave away a broken Scirocco to someone on here.

I've moved around quite a bit so don't see many of my ex cars, although about 10 years ago I owned a really clean gas converted e28 525e, I had no use for it as by then I had 4 children. A stoner friend of mine bought it off me for about £500, although I can't say he's looked after it is still driving about and puts a smile on my face whenever I see it.

After running the red Rover 214 that I won in RobT's roffle for a while I sold it to my next door neighbour, she still has it about 18 months on.

Cobblers bought my Talbot Autosleeper and I often see it parked up, near where he works I think.

Sherpamog bought my Renault Kangoo.
