Shiny 405

Didn't mind the 406, it gave some good service to countless taxi drivers.

The 405 still does. Don't forget they are still chucking them out at a quarter million a year rate.

To put this into perspective, in Peugeot's worldwide operations, including Opel/Vauxhall, the 405 is the third best selling car:

Only the 208 and the C3 find even more buyers.

The 406 in comparison was a short lived flop, which is little wonder considering the unbearability of its ugliness.

I had many 405s. Every one of them was reliable, comfortable to drive and a great car. I still lament scrapping one of them due to a failed clutch and gearbox.

On the assumption that it's not been scrapped too, I still have a 405 TD executive estate languishing on a farm down in somerset. Not seen it in years though..

I wouldn't say the 406 was ugly, it was quite a handsome car.  I just think the 405 is far more fun to drive.

Also 406 produced for 9 years in France and another 2 in Egypt so hardly a 'short-lived flop'

I said

in comparison

and only in this context it makes sense.

Yes, something produced for eleven years is a short lived flop IN COMPARISON with something it was supposed to replace,

that is still being produced after 31 years, and that is still the third best selling car of a corporation.

I can't believe people are arguing over the relative merits of two MODERN cars on here. And anyway, everyone knows the 405 is better. Especially those 405s with the really great ride quality, what are they called? You know, the really funky good-looking ones, with the flawless handling. They've got those super comfortable interiors. You know the ones I mean, what the hell are they called. The ones with the headroom, and the seat/wheel position so people over 5ft7in can drive them. What the hell are those 405s called again?

Oh, yeah, I remember

Seriously though, since driving across France the other day I've been pretty turned on by the idea of a 405. They really have aged well.

What do you lot reckon one would have to spend at a friendly ga rage having the head gasket done on an XUDT? Because in all other respects this looks like an absolute belter. So nice to see a pre-airbag version in a nice spec like this

Fond memories of a friends 405 estate, brand new at the time. Yours looks stunning, I've had to have a look at eBay. Much prefer the 405/406 to the 407 monstrosity anyway!

Both 405s and 406s are very hardy, but I do like mine to be green blooded.
