A few of my old ones;

A Fiat Uno 70S taken in 1993. Belonged to my first wife.

Renault 12 in 1981. taken after I had coach painted it red. When purchased there was mucho rust in the doors etc so I bought a replacements from some scrappies but all in different colours. So to make it look half decent I hand painted it.

Renault 18 GTS - 1984. I bought it from a Lancia dealer with 100k on the clock and took it to 140 before selling it on for a 316 E21.

Cortina 1600e. Bought when I was just 17 and passed my test. Insurance would only do me TP only. Still a fortune in the day. kept it a while before selling it on to one of the lads in the workshop.

Have a Viva (or what we think is one) steering wheel from a rather famous long dead illegal breakers yard on someone's land. The daughter and hubbie were shooed out because the house was sprayed from the Crittol windows to the floor with asbestos.

All through the summer after I left school (1998) I kept bumping into this chap in the Queens Head who kept trying to sell me his mk.1 Escort, a red k-reg 1300 2 door. Wanted a bit of welding to pass an mot but otherwise pretty good but his wife was giving him ballache about it sitting in the drive. He wanted £100 to start with and by September I reckon it would've been just take it away. Never liked them enough to do more than walk round and take a look. Another one I kick myself over but who knew then they'd ever be worth what people will give for them now

That must've been great fun, bet it flew!

It was great, cheap fun.

The diff was mig'd and the petrol tank was a small LPG tank bolted in the boot. It held about a gallon and a half and was just enough for a race.

The best fun for me was racing when it was wet. The visor soon muddied up and so vision was restricted to a small slot formed by raising the full face visor just a little. This was accompanied by a steady stream of mud that was constantly clogging one's nose and mouth.

How I ever finished a lap in conditions like that I don't know but we were all in the same position, except the leader.

Look back on those times with fond memories.

Does autocross happen much nowadays? There was a club local to me (Crownwheel Auto Club IIRC), they held a few field-based events each year on the Suffolk/Essex border.

Some competitors used proper rally cars, others were whatever they hauled out of the scrapyard, most were somewhere in between. I remember oddities like a cutdown Ventora and a Jensen-Healey over the years.

Nice photos.

I used to race at the Bluebell track (Spilsby) and Sturton track (Lincoln Show Ground).

A lot were Minis of all engine sizes. I remember an Imp with a Rover V8 in the back. Escorts were also popular. Not been a contact sport as such, a car could last a few seasons and old rally cars were quite popular. Mine was between that and the scrap yard (just).

No glass was allowed in the clubs I was in. Mesh had to be so big to allow vision. The NSF door had to be cut down to allow entrance/exit. All other doors welded/bolted shut.

On one meeting the OSF inner wing gave out and the only thing stopping the strut from leaving through the top was the bonnet. Didn't stop me as some dexion and bolts across the inner wing split meant it was ready for the next race.

Also for one meeting a guy turned up with an ex Formula Ford chassis and trounced everyone in their class.

Where were those taken?

These shots were taken at Wissington, out in the countryside near Nayland on the Suffolk/Essex border. They also raced at fields in/around Boxford (where I grew up) and I also saw them race at Tattingstone near Ipswich.

Thanks. I remember a few Minis. One was some sort of cutdown mutant with a straight-cut gearbox that made it sound like a squealing piglet.

The family who ran the scrapyard at nearby Assington were quite involved with it. The son had an Alfa 1750 GT or the like which he raced and I remember seeing another one of the racers down there one day looking over a Fiat 125 as a potential candidate.

I recall ex-FF chassis being used as the basis for autograss specials. For some reason I never got to see any autograss racing.

Nowadays I suspect the towcars and vans in the pits would be of equal interest to us.

Rallycross is a brilliant spectator sport, I've no idea why it's not always on TV instead of F1.

I live about two miles from Wissington and this is the first I've heard of this. Unbelievable! Thanks for enlightening me, got any more?

Sadly I don't think so, but I'll keep my eye out. I used to cycle there with a mate when I was about 14/15.

I think the field they used was near Wissington Grange, somewhere around here: https://goo.gl/maps/wTxBJuV5RCx

it was never dull watching them race. I remember Will Gollop reducing his 6r4 to component parts in a nose tail roll at Lydden in early 90s. put him out for the season

There were a few nutters in the sport, I have tons of pics someplace

going to have a gander on this channel

Lately i found a small album of car pictures at my mother-in-law's.Some of them were of two Renault 4s that we (my father-in-law and I) renovated for my sister-in-law,one in 1992,the second in 1994.

We bought both cars from a friend who was good at trashing vehicles. The first car,a TL,was only nine years old at the time and in addition to the damage in these pictures also had door damage where the top half of the driver's door had been bent at 90 degrees to break in.We bent it back to a reasonable approximation of it's normal state and towed the car home.It cost £50.

Mechanically it was basically ok.Renault 4s are tough.I borrowed an Apollo electric sprayer and bought a litre of primer and a litre of blue enamel at the local Ford tractor dealer. We picked a colour called Nacton Blue, which apparently suits various Ransomes equipment. After a good deal of work with fibreglass and filler it was wheeled into the garage and came out looking like this:-

post-19075-0-59379900-1537437567_thumb.jpg

We never got the driver's door to fit properly, which made for a draughty experience on long runs.

The car lasted about 2 years until the chassis started to rust badly at the back.

The previous owner had replaced it with a beige 1982 GTL which had had dozens of tiny blue stars hand painted onto it by the hippies he bought it from.He didn't use it for long, and it lay there until we bought it for,you guessed it,£50.Unfortunately,there are no pictures of the car in beige with blue stars. We decided on a colour change, this time to Massey Ferguson red and I borrowed the Apollo again.

Here we see the car after being wheeled out into the sunlight after one coat of primer,a rubdown, and two coats of red.

post-19075-0-97300900-1537434768_thumb.jpg

Note the beige on the inside of the door.

And next to it's predecessor before having the lights put back on.

And the final result.

post-19075-0-48320600-1537434817_thumb.jpg

Then we had to get rid of the TL,so it was cut upon the front parking area:-

post-19075-0-09317700-1537434973_thumb.jpg

I saved one torsion bar to use as a very long drift and it's still in my garage,

Ironically,my sister-in-law's husband then decided he didn't like it,so it was sold and replaced with this:-post-19075-0-30198900-1537437196_thumb.jpg

A 1.1 for maximum misery.
