And then in a change to the advertised programme, I had to pop in and visit my petrol head uncle over the festive period. 

He claims to be an enthusiast but has a manual Merc SLK and a Skoda Octavia Turbo nutter bastard. Anyhoo, we made all the right noises over each others cars and then as I was driving off, he flagged me down to tell me of a horrible grating noise from the n/s/r wheel. It didn't do it again & was silent all the way home...

Tuesday I was to take my accountant out for xmas drink/lunch. I got myself dressed smartly, blazer, cravat, panama - you know the sort of thing us proper Jaaaag drivers wear and the car made the most dreadful scraping noise from the n/s/r. Dressed as I was, I had no choice but to go in scruffy the scarecrow. Today, dressed more casually I took the wheel off - absolutely nothing apparently wrong.

I am suspecting a trapped & flung out pebble/stone?

Anything else I should think about?

Rear wheel bearings do that on Jaguars when they are breaking up and then chewing the soft alloy casing. But that's on the older cars with inboard discs, so...

It's been silent today and there's no apparent vibration or deep growling from that corner.

 

Surely it'll vibrate horribly before it falls off?

I had that in a pub carpark once, thought I'd run over a can so got out to look.... nothing. A couple of days later, the back wheel DID fall off!  The bearing had chewed through the soft alloy casing until the hub came through. strangely, not that big a mess but the wheel did make a bid for freedom.

Bearings are a pain to check on Jags. There is a massively tight hub nut to crack off before it'll make any noise jacked up. At least that's what I found on my XJ40. Then I took it to a garage to change as it needs an elevently billion PSI press to get it in/out.

Mmmmm.

 

Having sat and worried a bit, I've also thought that it may be the handbrake shoes breaking up, becoming dislodged, whatever... The previously dismal handbrake seems to have tightened itself up a bit.

Perhaps I'll drive around it and not use the handbrake, relying on the parking pawl over the next couple of weeks and see what occurs.

Bloody Hell, not only an FTP, but an actual breakdown.

 

I was supposed to be attending Camper Mart in Telford to write some stuff.

Queues were mental to get in, and after a while, a gentle puff of steam burst from under the bonnet, together with the message, 'engine coolant low', I turned around and headed out of the queue loking for some water and to get some air through the radiator. The temperature guage never moved at all and within a few short minutes I was parked in a layby with a cafe.

Any normal person on this forum would post pics of the car, layby, cafe and full English, but me, I just called Auto aid and was recovered home.

A bit of a wasted day, but it appears that the top hose has simply popped out of the block. A new hose and clip will be sorted in the next few days...

Never great having a FTP but it's always nice when it's something simple like a hose clip.

Further to my failure and apology above, whilst sat in 'Jenii's Snack Bar' alongside the old A5 for much of Sunday morning,

I did hear a couple of tales, one of which I will share with you now.

 

Apparently, a few months ago, Jenii (twenty something) asked or told one of her customers that he couldn't smoke whilst using the toilet. 

This is a plastic Porta-bog thing around the back, by the gas bottles, but apparently he did. "I caught him smoking in my toilet".

I was forced to her imagine her following him out and sniffing around the bog door.

"So I locked him in - for four hours!"

Not surprisingly, chap was unimpressed when she removed the padlock and he apparently burst out of the bog

with such force, that the door smacked her full in the face. "I had a black eye for weeks".

 

I can honestly say that I didn't know quite how to respond.

The only things in the boot of mine are picnic table/chairs/wicker basket.

All things that will come in handy when the plastic housing explodes.

 

TBH its probably more helpful than me having a metal housing in the boot too as I dont carry any tools to fit it when mine does finally pop.

Exactly the same thing has happened to mine. I bought the an aloooominum housing to replace the erstwhile plastic one, and a new thermostat to chuck in while I was at it. About £50 all in from SNG Barrett, so nothing to worry about really.

 

I'd like to offer guidance in how to fix it, but I've not got round to actually installing it due a serious attack of Lazybastardistus/itstoofuckingcold.

Quick update - car has been back-filled and pressure tested.

It has suffered no ill effects.

 

Unlike me,

Turns out the fair wife saw the car potter past the window on the back of a truck before she saw me and she continues to take the piss.

 

She'll be laughing on the other side of her face if my number comes up tonight and I win that bleedin' Vel Satis!

There is nothing particularly exciting to report. Collapsing handbrake shoes turned out to be the cause of the noise from the rear hub and the number plate has begun to delaminate but otherwise the car continues to waft effortlessly...

 

I need a bit of help with the numberplate tho', the delamination is going to be an MOT failure in a month or two, Sainsburys car park shows random numbers on the screen as I drive in. It's obviously the wrong font & there's a tiny rectangular one on the back. If I am to get a nice dealer plate from the  folk at DMB graphics, I'm going to have to supply some info.

I'm assuming that being a Reading registered motor , it was supplied by 'Lancaster' Jag dealer, but I don't seem able to find a decent example of what their logo looked like back in 1999.

 

This is the best I can do...

Lancaster had a few Jaguar dealerships and I remember seeing a number of their cars around. I remember them as having the Lancaster logo in the same font as the one in your picture - but just the word  "Lancaster" - without the Jardine Motors Group trading as bit. IIRC some cars had the branch on them as well - and some didn't.

 

Here is the 'plate with the Lancaster name and also the individual branch from 1994 - it is earlier than your car, but I imagine they will have still been using them when your car was made. Jaguar's rebranding came a fair bit later IIRC. The version which lacked the individual branch address had the logo used on the rear window sticker of this XJ40.

I remember the logo as being in the same green used by a lot of Jaguar dealers at the time, as used on my car below - but it looks to be in black on this car, so I may have misremembered it. Note the Austin-Rover/Jaguar/Unipart font used.

I've not actually got around to ordering any number-plates yet, but this morning I took it to KWIK-FIT whose skilful operatives attempted to re-gas the air conditioning.

Not unexpectedly this didn't work and I wasn't charged. However, much to my disappointment, but not surprise, skilled receptionist/customer interface operative just shrugged at me when I asked him what was wrong and/or where it was leaking from.

I seek the advice of the collective, what do I do now?

Is there a known failure point for these motors?

And assuming a split pipe, buggered O ring or fucked pumpy thing is to blame, who do I take it to next?

The very excellent but rather inconveniently situated Jaguar specialist or the local garage who apparently deals with 'a lot of stuff like that' & gets an air-con specialist in?

Winnah - Free parking in the limited hours gaff's and no fineage rip off for overstaying your not welcome.   A set of 'show plates' for highdays holidays and errmoteedays and Arfur Daley is proud of your boi.

S'pose the easiest place to start is the fan. When you turn on the A/C does the fan kick in? I think I replaced the fans on that so there is a chance I've not connected something correctly.....

 

I am sure the air con worked after that though but might be imagining it as sold it before the following summer.

I have absolutely no idea how air con does anything.

It's booked in with a local air con specialist on Monday, they were very sceptical that kwik fit would have done anything at all, bar sit and watch it for an hour, given the age of the car!

Just the normal radiator fans. Open the bonnet (probably with the engine running) when the engine is cold and switch on the air con. The two fans at the front should start spinning. If not, thats probably your problem.

 

However it could be several things, thats probably the easiest to check.

OK, took it down to the local bloke with an air con machine.

He removed 148g of gas from the system, this is the system that KWIK FIT had just drained last Thursday.

Checked for vacuum, like KWIK FIT were unable to do last Thursday because of leaks.

Saw no sign of any leaks so re-filled with 695g of gas.

It works.

Charged me a few pence less than forty quid.

Anyone any idea of the best way to complain about KWIK FIT who appear to have simply parked it in their garage for an hour.

In more exciting news, the Jaguar passed it's MOT yesterday needing just a balljoint and a tickle on the sill.

My chap with the spanners apparently had to do a huge amount of swearing and hire a specialist tool to compress the spring and get it back on!

      Been a busy 6 months on my old Range Rover that I own 50/50 with Fathathastag
       
      Bit of background first..
       
      We bought it March 2015 just as genuine early Range Rovers were starting to get noticed. Alas not early enough that we could have got it for a couple of hundred quid. 
       
      The car had been owned for decades by a Land Rover enthusiast and this particular car retained a lot of features unique to pre 1973 Range Rovers. Sadly he died a few years back and the car was left outside the front of his house. 
       
      I spotted it on eBay and arranged with the owners widow to view. There were no bids and my offer was good enough to take the auction off.
       
      The engine had been part way through a top end strip down when work stopped, I had no idea even if the car would move. But rented a trailer and relocated it from Watford to North Devon where fathathastag has a barn suitable for storage.
       

       

       
      The project is on the right, we towed it into the field and pushed it into the barn

       
      In May 2015 I got to do an assessment of the car. body wise most outer panels were ok, the inner wings looked ok, it clearly needed some work but was unsure how much at this point. main objective was to see if the engine was a runner.
       

       

       

       

       
      Found that the gearbox and axles were original to the car, but the engine was from an earlyish SD1
       
      while the seat covers are not original some of the plastic kitkat seat coverings are underneath, the rear seat especially
       

       

       

       

       
      The head has some nasty corrosion very near the fire ring seal,

      It seems like it's time to have a new thread dedicated to the on-going progress (or otherwise) of the Beige BX, without people having to trawl through pages of stuff about the original purchase.       Today's progress at SF17 was MEGA. Much work was carried out on the fuel system by Joe and many of the assembled Shiters; the fuelling problem finally being cracked when Joe fitted one of the Pleasure Wagon's clear fuel filters!

      A quick ride round the campsite revealed that the spheres are completely shagged, as the suspension was entirely bereft of travel. On the plus side, there are two new spheres in the boot. Dead chuffed to see it run, and have a go at piloting it across the field, though
       
      It's headed back to Castle_Cleland after SF, after which we need to have a think about the best way to go from here.
