Thanks! I presumed it would be something like that. Although the front ones look a bit different to what I would have expected. For £80 a set I think I will make a set up! Nice to know what they should like to get me started.

Yes, I wasn’t suggesting you buy them but now you know what to look for or make. At £20 each I would make them myself!

Makes life so much easier knowing what I need to do though! They  are simple enough, sadly at home I have limited metal working kit so they will be fairly simple but I will make some more accurate ones when I am back at work as have some better kit there. I searched for the term and Tickover want £110 for a set!!!!

Well this weather isn’t helping. I have done some cleaning of trim bits and fitted the parcel shelf supports. Then sat down to order a few bits I need, so a few interior bits, lower front grills, tiny nuts and bolts for the parcel shelf trim are on their way. Still frustrating though as could have got a lot done today.

My back garden could be used for the monsoon season scenes in a Vietnam film at the moment so all bigger jobs on hold again. What a ballache. So what is left to do that can be done inside? Not much really so I turned to the utterly essential job of sorting the parcel shelf. Ford parcel shelves are notoriously shit from this era and Capris are no different. I had stripped the old one a few days ago and my wife kindly bought me a new one from CCI a few years ago for Christmas. So this afternoon has been spent moving bits across. I decided to use small stainless nuts and bolts rather than rivets and it’s gone well. When the rain stops I will drop it in and see how it looks.

I managed to get a few dry minutes and tried the new parcel shelf which looks very nice I think! I also had a go with the gap in the door card for a remote mirror which I don’t have and that has come out ok as well. It would be nice to do the bigger jobs but the small ones need doing sometime so it all works towards the end point.

So after marvellous May we have had just bloody awful June and progress has ground to a halt. The weather this morning looked a bit iffy so I decided against risking the passenger door and opted to finish off the front end. Some sealing around the wing - headlamp bowl was needed and then to sort the trims. They had to go in with the headlamp units and then much wincing as 38 year old plastic was gently bent out of the way to allow the screws to go in. All was good and I was ready to have a go at the headlight alignment when the heavens opened and even though there was only the back end stuck out it made sense to stop. So minimal progress but at least I got something done.

Like the "EFA" numberplate.

I wonder if, in Germany, there's a plate reading "FT-FY...."?

It’s a Stoke plate, it lived there for the first thirty years of its life. Guy bought it from new and used it continuously until he was too old to drive.

Does anyone happen to know what size the grill screws are? It’s the ones in the pic below. The price at Tickover is fine but their postage charges are stupid so looking elsewhere (I know it’s only a fiver but partly a principle thing and partly that a few fivers add up over time).

Nice rimz! Early ones too with the stainless centre caps.

Yup! Bargain too, just sheer luck. If it hadn't rained I would have missed them. They need a refresh but that's ok. I am sure I saw a plastic mask for doing the black bits somewhere.

The black bits are one of the things I’m not looking forward to on mine! Hand painting them looks like an absolute nightmare job, but I did get one of those vinyl sticker kits off eBay. How well they’ll work I don’t know though.

Ive barely touched my car over the last few weeks, bloody raining all the time! You can tell it’s summer now!

Vinyl sticker kit? Is that instead of painting? I would be interested in a link if you have one. I am sure I have seen a plastic mask that sits on the wheel and you spray the black bit but I cannot remember where I saw them for the life of me.

I can’t find the ones I bought now, but I did find these which look similar https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Capri-mk2-mk3-Cortina-mk3-Escort-mk2-wheel-rims-stylization-kit-decal/224008493678?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D225114%26meid%3D63da4a19c21845cbb54268ff3400946c%26pid%3D100667%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D8%26mehot%3Dnone%26sd%3D224008493678%26itm%3D224008493678%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2334524&_trksid=p2334524.c100667.m2042

Mine came from a U.K. manufacturer and came with the black bits for the centre caps too.

I’ve actually just dug mine out, mine definitely have the round black stickers for the old stainless centre caps too. I could actually do mine any time now thinking about it so I may get the spare out tomorrow and have a go. There’s a few extra stickers with mine for practice or fuck ups!

From memory I found mine by searching for ‘Capri centre caps’ or ‘Cortina centre caps’. I think.

edit; here’s the centre caps separately https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SPORTS-WHEELS-CENTRE-CAP-DECALS-CLASSIC-FORDS-CAPRI-CORTINA-ESCORT-MK1-MK2-MK3/322339475449?epid=549133719&hash=item4b0cee0ff9:g:e-MAAOSwv9FXgSkO

Did you get yours painted or powder coated? I am looking at powder coating as a localish place does them cheap.

I had mine blasted, then powder coated. I think for wheels it’s the best option tbh. When they did the powder coating on mine they said they could do them in standard grey or silver (or indeed any colour I wanted!) but they also had a darker silver colour that also had a bit more of a metallic ‘fleck’ in it. They said it was a lovely colour for wheels so I went for that. It’s obviously not standard, but I think it looks a bit nicer.

Only thing you do need to be careful with is when you fit them sometimes the powder coat needs sanding or scraping from around the wheel nuts and hubs, it’s thicker than paint and can stop them fitting properly. And also when the wheel nuts are tightened the powder coat can break away from under the nut, letting the nuts loosen. I had my Volvo wheels done at the same time as these and I had these problems with it, I had to keep checking the wheel nut torque every couple of months!

I would not be in a rush to paint any black on the wheels. The ones in Dan’s picture looks as they should be. In the September 1982 brochure the L, LS and GL all had plain silver wheels with no black. I know your car is slightly newer but I would be amazed if they went back to painting the black bits on.

My March 83 doesn’t show the L from the outside sadly so that is useful to know. I imagine it was a bean counter move to save a few pennies here and there. Makes life easier too.

As Shite Ron said, later Fords with dartboards never had the black bits. I’m fairly certain that once they stopped using the stainless centre caps and moved on to the plastic ones that was when the black paint on the wheels stopped. Must have been about 77/78ish I’d have thought?

Im most probably going to do black on mine, as my cars a 74 and should have them at that age. It’s original 5x13 skinny dartboard rims did have the black bits too. Personally, I prefer them with the black, but it’s very much down to what you want on your car at the end of the day! I doubt anyone would criticise much if you went for them on a car a bit late to have had them!

I think they look better with as well, the nice thing is that I can get them done in silver and then make that decision later if I do choose to have them. What wheel nuts are you using? I have struggled to find the original plain cheap type but there are loads of chrome ones on eBay. I have a brand new set of nuts, sadly for alloy wheels!

Luckily I kept my cars original wheel nuts and the centre caps from its original sport steel wheels, so I’ve got the right wheel nuts for these wide sports steels. But, they’re looking the worse for wear now! They’re a bit rusty and the chrome plating is coming away.

At the moment, I’ve used them as they are but I’ve bought a set of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360511576949 to replace them once the cars done. I’m not sure how good quality the chrome will be on them but if they turn out to be crap I’ll send my original ones away for re-chroming, or just paint them black.

I’ve got a set of alloy nuts somewhere too!

I think that is what I will end up going with as well. The original type that I think I remember, but could be wrong, don’t seem to be available at the moment. I found  one on eBay new but they wanted £12 for a single one!!!!!!

£12 for one nut!! Sod that!

You can just see the original Ford nuts on mine, the eBay replacement ones aren’t exactly the same but they should do, for now at least. I’ll most likely get these original ones chromed and reuse them at some point. These ones actually had little black plastic caps over the heads when I got the car, unbelievably all of them were still present and in decent nik so I kept those too! They’re in a takeaway tub in the garage, I may yet reuse them too!

They are different to the ones on my 82 GL, they were half the length and just plain nuts, no chrome and with a hole all the way through. It did have the black plastic covers though.
