Champagne....... IIRC

That would make sense, there isn’t that much difference. It looks a little darker than champagne in the flesh but being an old pic it’s more likely to look darker than lighter I guess. Another very popular colour from when there were lots of colours as opposed to silver and white. The golds weren’t my favourite colours but my first Capri was Tibetan Gold (metallic brown) and I would love another in that colour.

Couldn’t resist doing just a little more so fettled the bumper and got it in primer. I am getting to be too much of a perfectionist as a couple of bits really irked me so rubbed back and put the tiniest amount of filler you have ever seen on and will finish when I have five minutes spare.

Never touched the engine (brand new).....

Might have looked at these [Weber]... Had a 28/36 (choked down) on my 998 IMP ;)

.... this one, however, will be a thirsty/borewashing Ba#tard :)

RockkkOnnnn.

I fitted a pair of twin 40 Dellortos to my original Capri. I got them by swapping them for a set of alloys with a guy who worked at the local tyre place as you do. Took a weekend to get it running rightish (thankfully they had come off a pinto or I don’t think I ever would have got it running). It sounded AMAZING, sadly performance seemed no better at all (surprise to a 17 year old, but not when you are older and wiser and realise that I had changed nothing else at all, what a numpty!). I ran it for a week like that and it got through about a months worth of fuel so off they came and on went the original twin choke Webber. I then swapped the dellortos with the stores guy called Dave at Albert Looms scrappy for a set of Mk2 Ghia alloys made by Ronal that someone had sprayed Gold.

I don’t suppose anyone knows anywhere that stocks the clips to fit the pressed steel door trim? The one that runs next to the weather strip (which I also need). I can’t find them anywhere but have no idea what they look like which doesn’t help.

These are the clips, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DOOR-WEATHER-SEAL-CLIPS-EXTERNAL-MK2-MK3-FORD-CAPRI-2-8i-3-0S-2-0S-280-LASER-RS/131636625772?hash=item1ea627816c:g:6PAAAOSw9mFWK8ju

I assume these are the ones you mean? They rivet onto the door top along side the window glass, then the door glass rubber seal pushes into them and the metal trim pushes onto the top.

Weather strip, https://www.capriclub.co.uk/Door_Weather_Strip_Mk_23--product--19.html

Paint looks great btw!

More progress today. Rear seat belts installed, rear seats back in which is a crap job. For some reason they won’t lock back though - almost as though they are too well padded but guess they need adjusting. Front end was partially rebuilt and looking good. Then a few other odds and sod bits of trim and one rear trim cars fitted. Gave up at 2 as it got too hot.

A curse on you and Dan for making me want a Capri.

(Won’t happen though — can’t afford one and anyway I’ve got to sort out the Granada first.)

I have been looking at Granada’s and Cortinas recently, it’s an itch I need to scratch at some point. Prices are on the up for all the 70s and 80s Fords. Looking forward to getting this sorted and on the road. Just realised I can’t remember if the front lower grills were present or not when I got it. I know where they will be in the shed if I do have them.

And I have a small dilemma. The drivers door card is warped but I have a very nice spare, only problem is that the car it came from had a remote mirror. So do I stick with the original or try to find some sort of blanking plug for the new one?

Had the excitement that is a shed clear out this morning. About 5 years ago I bought a job lot of stuff from eBay for £50 that was wrongly described. Amongst many many gems including a brand new clutch and immaculate lights, there was a random bag of bits. I had a rummage and it turned up 8 bumper clips (full set) and 3 end cap covers, plus a set of headlamp screws. In the insane world that is classic ford, that equates to about £90 if bought new now! And then the real result - I found a locking petrol cap minus its key,I have an old pot of keys so gave some a try. I only went and found a pair that fit and work perfectly! Locking caps go for £25-45 on eBay depending on condition so very pleased with the haul today!

Could you use the cover off your old door card? carefully separate it and carefully glue to the good door card. Alternatively do as ford did on cars with electric windows and cover a button with matching vinyl and use that to cover the hole  (attached from the rear)

As to purchasing a Cortina or Granada, I strongly recommend it. I recently bought an early mk2 Granada and love it. Just seeing a Cortina cheers me up. They are not as ridiculously cheap as they were when I bought most of mine but are still fantastic value. I am really enjoying seeing your Capri coming together.

Thanks, I like the look of that! My brother in law had a mk2 granny. I remember it seeming SO posh at the time. And an old girlfriends grandad had a Mk3 cortina in bright green (java green?). It was an estate and I think it is still alive in the village I grew up in with a 1.6 orion also owned by the same guy. I have nearly bought one a couple of times but something got in the way each time.

Nice find with that fuel cap! I know you were after one!

I too would dearly love a Cortina. A mk3 saloon in GXL or E flavour would be my favourite, but tbh any mk3,4 or ‘80’ mk5 would be fine with me. When I was a kid they seemed to be everywhere, just run of the mill older cars or bangers, but I loved them. They’re a lovely looking car and very much icons of their time. When you see them now you’ve got to pick your jaw up of the ground!

Same for Granada’s, though I was lucky enough to have a late mk2 Ghia x estate, which I absolutely adored. It looked a bit rough and ready but it was a great car, a real survivor really having done 200k odd miles, and had a narrow escape from the banger track when I saved it. They drive beautifully, the sort of car I could easily sit in all day without feeling the miles after. I’d highly recommend one if you get the chance. V6 ideally! I’d love a mk1 saloon next...

Heres my old one, now belongs to @Skizzer

Its an 85 So one of the very last ones, Mineral blue metallic with blue velour interior. The estates are particularly good lookers imho. The Transits mine too, still got it.

I had forgotten I had a spare and still can’t quite believe finding a key to fit - but 70s/80s Ford locks weren’t known for their security!
That Granada is gorgeous!

Yeah the locks on old Fords were a bit shit. My mate had a D reg mk3 2.0 Laser, we used his key to open my mk2’s drivers door and boot! It wouldn’t do anything on the ignition though but we didn’t force it. Maybe forcing it might have given a different result! Bizarre though.

When I was working in a garage, one day a lady turned up in a state and wanted to know if we could help as she’d locked her keys in her 90’s Escort. At the time I was driving a 90 Orion so the key was the same type. We went to her car, popped my key in and it opened! She couldn’t believe it!! Got her out of the shit though.

I managed to snap the key on my first Capri and the RAC guy turned up with a bag of old keys. The third one we tried worked perfectly! And I managed to get into the wrong escort once, it was only when I sat down and noticed an air freshener I didn’t have that I realised what I had done. Everyone had big auto locks and the handbrake to gear stick things in those days.

Dad was a manager at Halewood in  the 80's and brought home about 40 keys to see if one fitted the patio door that we had. One did. However, I could have stolen every Ford around if I had been so minded.

Evening Ken! How are you doing mate? Any tips for polishing the paint up in a couple of weeks? I know you are a bit of an expert in such matters.

My Dad tells the story of getting in his Fiesta once and being unable to start the ignition.  Then he realised he'd unlocked and sat in another identical Fiesta, a few rows down from his one...

My Dad had three of these as company cars.

JRF670V 2.8GL auto two tone gold and brown
CPC937Y 2.8 injection special manual in metallic grey with red pinstripe, white alloys and recaro interior
B109BWC 2.8I Ghia X silver in auto

All driven hard on a company fuel card and none ever did more than 18mpg.

Great cars all the same..

It went downhill from there to a Sierra 2.0 Ghia estate and he finished with an Astra 1.7d estate with the low blow turbo..

Found a problem with the headlight plastic surrounds- they won’t fit! I can only think it’s down to the pattern wings. I tried them at the end of the morning so have a plan for when I try next time. Worse case scenario is that I will have to cut them to get them to fit.

I have found the original ad from the Capri forum. The seller was ‘economical’ with the condition of the body (it took two years of welding). The rear had been done - very very very badly and caused sooooo much grief. Engine was described as knackered but actually just desperate for a service and now runs sweet as a nut. Slightly tatty still makes me laugh, properly fucked would have been more accurate.

Hi guys,

I have a 1983 capri that I'm looking to sell, it was supposed to be an on going project but I simply do not have the time or the money to complete it.

The shell is relatively solid, though the bodywork is slightly tatty, I have one new patent front wing for it and one rear arch panel. The passenger's side rear arch has been replaced.

The engine unfortunately has seen better days, it's burning oil and plugs one and four are oily.

It's had two new rear tyres and it has the non standard alloys off a laser?

Any more details feel free to PM me.

Car is located on the east side of Birmingham.
