Jesus fuck, change the record, eh? we get it... you think it was too expensive...we heard you the first time. Would you pay 3.5k for one? obviously not, going by the 50 times you have said as much in the past six pages, but someone did. They apparently have enough disposable income to pay a sum they are comfortable with for a car they wanted. Beyond that, who gives a toss? fuck.

I can't believe it's still going on! They were a shit car new and they are shit cars now. Maybe the diesel ones are good for the engines? I dunno. But they're only really good to workhorse and scrap when they shit themselves. Paying this kind of money for a 405 is retarded

I was considering having the sills cleaned up on mine and getting the cambelt changed, but now I'm thinking that could make me retarded, so perhaps I should just cut my 405 up into little bits and set fire to it or something?

 

Let me know what you think is best.

Posts like the one up the page are exactly what I had a rant about in another thread.

Why does some know it all have to come on here (funnily enough a site specifically for old cars!) and slag off someone’s choice of car!?

There’s been a bit of it going on here lately and it starts wearing through eventually.

 

If you can’t say anything nice then keep it to yourself.

I kind of hope the price this made isn't just a one off and prices will rise. The trouble with 80's and 90's cars being treated as bangers is one day there won't be any left. As a lot of us know you can spend silly amounts of money restoring a car so it is nice to know that you are not only saving something but also might get at least half the money you have spent back.

Agreed. When you spend money maintaining and improving 90's stuff, there's always that thought in the back of your mind that if the brown stuff hits the swirly thing and you need your money back, you stand to lose a lot of cash. 

 

But to be honest, I'd rather sell one of my buttocks than my 405.

More to the point my bloody daily driver GTX has had a hissy fit and won't idle.  I've changed virtually every pressure valve/sensor/pipe and idle control valve to no avail, it won't have it.  Tomorrow will involve a long throttle body swap to try and finally identify the problem.  If that fails, well yes obviously 405s are shit, but here's hoping..

90s stuff will be on the up for a long while. There are probably more Morris Minors around than many common cars from the early 90s now. In lots of ways it’s the perfect AS era, complex and safe enough to be good cars for daily duties but without the ten zillion terabytes of Computer shizzle now found in cars. I would love a good 405 estate but can’t find a decent one for sensible money, seems it’s another boat I have missed.

Honest John classics did an incredibly bad go at working out how many 1990s cars there are left, I think a Rover 400 was the sure fire investment implied by that article.

 

I would take the figures with a pinch of salt though - HJ claimed there were ‘only’ 26,000 Ford Focus Mk1s ‘left’. I thought ‘that’s complete bollocks, I can see three of the fuckers from my flat window’. So rechecked and I think they meant ‘Mk1 Focus registered in 1998/99’ which now sounds a bit high as it would be a survival rate of about 25% on a nearly 20 year old car. But I think the ‘figures’ are from the same source as that ‘how many left’ site, so perhaps not that accurate.

 

Short version/TLDR: Billy’s not gonna be dining out on the monthly interest from the pasture of profit just yet.

Although this is a slight thread tangent I remember a three car race on a dual carriageway back in 1992 between my RS1600i, an Aston Martin DB6 and a 405 Mi16. The DB6 left me for dead and the 405 couldn't even catch it although it did a better job than my Escort.

No Rover 400 has been a surefire investment then or now! Buy them for peanuts, run them, put them up for sale for peanuts and they only get bought to break. If that.

They could be the exception (Rover isn’t popular with the general public), but look at things like 205s, a couple of years back you could get one with MoT for £150, now any decent 3 door is way more that that, even 5 door ones are creeping up.

Oh I don't disagree with 205, because of their looks, sporting heritage and ultimately the youthfulness (is that a word?  It is now) of Peugeot brand image.

 

But Rovers even today, all these years on have a staid image that stops investment ideas in their tracks.  I know this because i can't even get a roffle filled on them even on here!

That said mine is (or was) a 1.8 petrol model. In PSA circles it seems anything with an XUD9T engine is legendary and fetches a premium. 306, 309, 205 D Turbos etc will usually command a premium over their petrol powered siblings (GTi/Rallye models excluded). Personally I am no fan of the XUD but at the time it was quite revolutionary so I can understand why somebody now might have a hankering for a really clean high spec version of the car they drove as a salesman back in the early 90s. The colour is stunning too. I bid up to about a grand on it but stopped there as that's all it was worth to me. It was worth more to somebody else and that's up to them. I'd rather spend £3500 on an Mi16 (and you can easily get one for that), but at the end of the day it's different strokes for different folks. The doom blue Exec model has quite a few corrosion advisories on the MOT history so bid with caution.

 

It'll be interesting to see how many more 405 turbo diesel saloons come out of the woodwork now. It is rare to see a clean low mileage one. As we know most are miserable spec red estates used as a mobile shed.

Your photo shows the classical looks that define the 405:  The svelt Pininfarina body sweeping a bend, the flowing body kit showing the vibrance in the colour, period alloy wheels glistening in the sun light, and ....oh look! *squint* and a Mi-16 just passed by at speed.  And best of all, it's not going to be ridiculed by the mass crass media like the humble Marina has been  ;-)

 

I assume it's insured for three times what you won it for now though, eh.  So cannot be bought for £750 anymore?  Aww, go on

It's covered a bit under my fleet thread, although some people give it a wide berth for the Marina content! £795 would get you one in the same spec in very clean condition. I know as the guy I bought this one off has another he is currently selling with 58k on the clock (he is a 405 addict). My one would have been cheaper but it came with a full leather interior from an Executive model and the Mi16 alloys. Owned for most of it's life by a Peugeot factory employee. High spec diesels have always been sought after but the petrol ones are still an absolute steal and whilst they won't be as economical they are more fun to drive (I have had both) and they don't like to munch through headgaskets as much.

 

It's currently resting in my unit. I managed to crack the sump back in December and as I was planning on an engine swap anyway I took it off the road to do that. It's getting a 2.0 16v engine from a 306 cabriolet with 306 GTi6 inlet and exhaust manifolds so will be giving a similar power output to an Mi16 but for a third of the cost (the donor car was only £150).

 

I absolutely love it. After owning a string of 309s it was a revelation. I knew they had a good reputation back in their day, but the fact is, they're still good to drive today.

Not a bad old bus but that silver does absolutely nothing for it whatsoever!

 

Yampy priced 405's seem to be a bit scarce just lately? I'm hopefully attending Pugfest in mine again this year. As it's the 30th anniversary celebration there might be more than the 3 that were there last year? It'll be interesting to see how much people are asking for any that are for sale.

I wonder if they'll manage to persuade the owner of the Pikes Peak legend to ship it over?
