I've owned this since late 2016 and have covered around 10,000 wafty miles since. During that time I've replaced all the upholstery, the tyres, and fixed various niggly problems. The previous owner put in a new headlining. It still has some faults though:

  • air con is broken - "just needs a re-gas M8". Sadly not; I had a specialist check it and the compressor, condenser and the pipe between them all leak. That's about £500 in components, let alone the grief of disturbing a lot of nuts and bolts that haven't been touched in 23 years.
  • The paint is quite shite. It's had new front wings at some point and other panels have seen paint - and unfortunately not the same shade of paint. The OSR door is the worst panel, with some lacquer lift too. There's some flaking around the fuel filler area. All the arches are sound though, and it's solid under the windscreen vents too. Looks quite fancy from 10 feet away.
  • There's a knock from the rear over bad surfaces. It's always had this and I have tried to identify it, but turning the stereo on is my preferred solution...
  • Clock doesn't work
  • Air vents are a bit broken
  • Cupholder is also a bit broked but does as least stay closed.
  • Giffer scuffs to 3 corners. I did one of those, sorry

I've serviced it myself (last one in December), which included all fluids with the exception of the gearbox (fluid looks clean and the 'box works fine, so I've left it alone). I've suffered 1 FTP, when the battery was run down after a period of inactivity and I wrongly diagnosed the starter was goosed. It's been fine since.

More photos can be found here, and my original purchase thread is here.

For me, inside the X300 is one of the nicest places to sit that I know of any car that is likely to appear on this forum. The Sport is even better with the dark wood and superior seats. It's just the right amount of caddish without being too silly. Awesome value for money. GLWTS!

That's a honey.

This is pretty much what I wanted but end up with a Sov.

Hooli, I don't think this should give you any timing chain issues. Are you thinking of the later V8s with the plastic tensioner? Edit: the timing is wrong. Where is my head?!?!!?

It does look a lot of car for a thousand pounds!

Got married in one exact same colour and year as this one. Fantastic car to drive really smooth drive to them. The banging might be the A frame bushes.

It could also be the shock absorber top bushes or the lower bush. Failed top bushes tend to produce a sound like golf balls bouncing around in the boot, whilst the lower bushes make a tap-tap-tap sound like a  trapped leprechaun is attacking the boot floor with a tiny hammer.

Is that from the haynes manual

Ha - no!

The X300 uses the same rear suspension arrangement as the very late XJ40  - post VIN 696460 - the ones where the weight of the car is bourne by the  rear springs ralone rather than the shock absorber, and cast suspension arms. There are threads on xj40.com detailing how to do this - IIRC it isn't done the same way as the earlier XJ40s like mine.

The top bushes are parts 13 and 14 in the diagram, the lower one is part 17.

I imagine many people would replace the whole shock absorber though - which comes with all the bushes. (MNA3540BB)

This is still here, bizarrely nobody seems to want a massive car that does 24mpg. Anyone want to make me an offer around £850? I can't face the horror of eBay.

Sadly I've just bought a massive car that does 24mpg for £850.

I want this, but I need an estate. Soz :(

IF I needed a car RIGHT now, I'd either buy this or that white base corsa that my nephew bought in Accrington, and is now available again.

But I don't

I'm more than happy to come to your house and set fire to your current vehicle(s), I can deliver the Jag at the same time.

Would there be any interest in a £14-a-pop roffle for this?

Guest Hooli

If I wasn't involved in half-baked plans to move to Scotland I'd be all over this, but I just can't currently :(

Nah. I make a rule of not buying tickets over £6 and at 59 x £6 that's probably too low for you to consider including the seats, and wheels as well.

If only you could sell 118 tickets.

Hallo chaps. Too much tat lying and I have a funeral to pay for...
Mk2 Mondeo 2.0i Zetec, 44k miles, on ST170 alloys plus comes with a set of original spec 5-spoke alloys on duff tyres. MOT til 27/5/2020, some history and a recent battery.
There are a few marks (pictured), the rear arches aren't too far gone and it has had welding done on the sills.
The front windows open fine but need a little help closing, they come out the runners on the way up. C/L and heated screen work fine, as does the electric drivers seat adjustment. The clutch bites cleanly and the car pulls well through all the gears.
It has been sitting a month or so due to the diesel Proton's arrival and I could really do with the cash (unless someone has a carb-fed Proton saloon kicking about in which case I'll sell my arse instead).
Advertised elsewhere for £525, £400 on here with shiters discocunt applied.
Car is in Paisley, Scotland, four minutes walk from Paisley Canal station.

Just about an hour ago I went to start my car up, had Mrs Dustman with me, to go and pick Miss Dustman up from work. Turned over fine but took a while to fire up.

Steering felt heavy. Thought maybe as it's currently -5 + wind chill it's just cold & the fluid is thick.

Started reversing out my bay then I was greeted with:
      "DING DONG" - ABS fault.
      "DING DONG" - ESP fault
"DING DONG" - headlamp auto levelling not working, contact service.

I shut the car down straight away and we went in Mrs D's Corolla.

Alternator is less than 2 months old, it's a recon unit from Alternator Man in Portsmouth. Hoping the cold isn't killing the battery and it's taking the 'nator out with it (battery passed the drop test last time the no-charge warning came up). Looks like a session with the multimeter after work tomorrow.....
