I see no smoke at tickover either. Quick blat around the block, only a few whisps of smoke on acceleration. I really hope this is it. Goes back to the garage tomorrow for MoT over the weekend or Monday.

Indeed it was.

The garage was pretty impressed with my work as I'd asked them just to check the torques on all the fittings I had replaced before they sent it round for the test. Not blowing my own trumpet.

It's funny how different garages pick up different things. The NS suspension arm is barely noticeable by all accounts so may last the year out, the rest can be sorted as and when.

I'm now giving it a blez up to Kent for a couple of days. Then next Sunday the Corolla's balls get replaced, so another thread on some genuine shite to update!

Result of blat to Kent. Bit flat because bad connection to swirl flap motor (I know this is broken wire) so power is a bit hit and miss.

With a year's ticket and a 200 mile shakedown over the last couple of days, time for a new list of jobs to do on this car over the next year.

  1. Full service including alternator belt, cam belt and water pump.
  2. Replace bottom engine pulley as I think the rubber damper in the middle of it is getting a bit knackered after 205 and it seems to vibrate a little.
  3. Sort our O/S wing repeater - the lens is cracked and mouldy, and the bulb holder is a bit grotty and has a iffy connection somewhere
  4. Check swirl flap motor connector and wiring, I think it has a broken wire or a poor connection; failing that reinstate old swirl flap motor.
  5. Replace both rear tyres - I may put the 2 y/o fronts on the back as they're about 3-4mm tread.
  6. Replace leaking headlamp washer pump
  7. Replace rear wiper blade
  8. Clear any codes that may have picked up
  9. Replace rear number plate bulbs (I have 2x 5w capless, but I'm looking at replacing with LED)
  10. Keep an eye on the rear suspension bushes and the steering inner joints as advised at MoT
  11. Replace any missing trims.
  12. Replace O/S/F front hub (that will be a mission as the driveshaft splines are still seized/rusted into it)

I'm hoping now with all the work I've done the car will be on the road for a few more years yet, if I can get her to 250k in my ownership I'll be chuffed. Going to take a few days away from car tinkering, plus the Corolla's MoT is higher priority now.

Mrs_d used the Saab this evening to go to her new evening job.

Got a phone call at 9:15ish from her telling me the car conked out. I knew it was low(ish) on fuel, about half a gallon left in the tank but she promised to put some diesel in on the way home. Went to petrol station with jerry can. Found mrs_d, and the Saab, and a puddle of diesel on the floor.

Cylinder No.3 has spat out its leak off t-piece again. Bodged it to get home but I'll have to assess the damage (if any) tomorrow.

I had the Corolla destined for some garage action tomorrow. Pah.

Did you put a new leak off kit on? If so, wondering if the engine cover maybe is knocking it somehow?

I assume all the mounts are still on it? The cover on the one I had was on+off so many times with the car breaking, I gave up putting it back on! A bit noiser (because its there for acoustic reasons too) but not excessive.

New leak off connectors and hoses, I think I still have a good T-shaped one from the old set. It had actually come out of the injector, so wondering if the O-ring or R-clip are wanky.

cover has its 4 rubber mounts so i’ll check make sure everything is in place. On Tacho break at work so won’t know until I get home and have a look

Put a new O-ring seal on the loose T-piece, seems to be a better fit and no leaks etc.

Something I'll have to keep an eye on though. I can't find the old ones so looks like I need to buy a few spares.

A smoll drive around yesterday evening and the diesel leak from No3 injector leak off system has returned. It's only a drip as opposed to pissing everywhere but nevertheless I don't want my car dripping fuel everywhere, especially as I have seen the mess diesel spills, unexpected rain or damp and motorcycles make when combined. It appears to be coming from where the hose and t-piece join, so I'm hoping it's just the hose being less than perfect as opposed to another t-piece being needed. I have spare hose but need to order more t-pieces, so I may get a set of the brass ones I have seen on the Bay of E, which means I can also jubilee clip the leak off hoses to them as opposed to interference fit with the plastic ones.

Can't do much with it today as I'm off to see my dad for his birthday!

I replaced the small piece of hose on injector number 3 and the leak went.

After a short drive, injector number 2's leak off popped out. Exactly the same issue as last Thursday - the R-clip has slipped and the T-connector jumped out. I noticed that Injector No 4's clip wasn't where is should be.

As posted in Ask a shiter? have I got crap R-clips or is something more serious the issue?

What about creative use of zip ties to hold the T connectors down? Does sound like the r-clips are a bit pants if they're coming off. Tried squidging them to close them up a bit and make a tighter fit?

I think it's a mix of poor quality R-clips and t connectors, despite them being GM branded parts. Well, they came in GM packaging. I'm hoping where I've changed all 4 o-rings and squeezed the clips a little they are holding today. Fitter at work owes me a favour so he's going to peek under the lid tomorrow see if I've done anything wrong as he knows these engines pretty good as we have a couple Fiat vans with the 8v version of the engine.

I'm hoping I've sorted out the injector leak off problems on this old crate now. After a new set of retaining clips proved to be as much use as a chocolate teapot, I bought another set, this time from a Saab Specialist on eBay for £4 posted.

Spot the difference. The new ones are a much better fit, but No 3 injector's leak off was still dribbling. This is the one I'd replaced the o-ring on a week ago.

Luckily I had managed to not throw out the old leak off connectors so I just whacked these back in with new o-rings from a jumbo pack I got from Lidl last summer (last 2) and they are snug, don't rattle about and no moar leeks by the looks of it. I am still tempted to get a set of metal connectors. Hopefully next month water pump, cam belt and alternator belt. Which I'm sure will be fun.

The hoses between the central T-piece and the connections on 3 & 4 are the replacement parts that, despite being GM 'genuine' parts, are utter shit (lower 2 injectors). I swapped the replacement hoses for 1 & 2 for the good originals that were in the garage in an old margarine tub.

I have managed to get my flaps flapping at last, but we now have a new issue.

EML came on today on way home, no limp mode. Popped round to a work colleague who has a code reader that apparently only works on Fords and Peugeots, but not his Nissan. Worth a try.

We have P1901 which is something to do with the DPF - could be a knackered sensor, broken wire or something similar. Wondering if the middle box on the system is clogged a bit as the one directly under the turbo is new(ish) and Possibly why the Flexi failed on my old exhaust. Need to study the book of lies and see how the exhaust system is configured on this car.

Might also see if I can remove this middle box and steam clean it internally at work if it is that which is clogged. It's probably more important that I get a water pump and an alternator belt and do those soon.

Cataclean and a blast might do it, or some equivalent dpf snake oil.  I think Wynn’s do one but no idea if it’s any good

I got some Seafoam additive I've been meaning to pop in the tank. It's the 'all rounder' for oil and fuel. Meant to put some pre-mot in the corolla but seeing as that runs as sweet as a nut emissions wise, I may save it for this oil burning beauty!

 

Last time I popped into Chalmers in Gravesend before the car got MoT'd, I got something they had on a promo from the states. Put the can in and I've never seen so much crap come out of a diesel (was around November last year). I was driving home to Sussex after I popped this stuff in before I left in the evening - I remember it did a pretty fierce regeneration as glowing smuts came out the tailpipe when I pulled over thinking the car was on fire! Shame I can't remember what it was.

It would appear I need a new EGR or at least give the one installed a real thorough cleanout again. There's no 'whoosh' on acceleration and turbo is now lagging a bit. I seem to remember the last time I needed an EGR the car behaved like this. What is more important though

The DPF does regenerate so I doubt it's blocked, I remember when putting the exhaust mid-section on the honeycomb was black but there were not blocked cells in the mesh. And the last regen the car did had nice smuts coming out the exhaust.

I need to get a water pump and alternator belt for this soon, possibly an alternator belt tensioner; I've still got Saabnut's cam timing tool and feel a bit guilty that I've not used it yet or sent it back.

This morning on a quick run to town the suspension has made a knocking noise from the offside. I'm hoping it's just some of the siezed/rusted together bits I couldn't remove have freed and just need torquing up again.

      I have a Vespa PX. I love it. I commute daily on it.



      I don't have a bike license so I'm riding around on L plates which I'm finding frustrating given that I appear to better understand the rules of the road than 99% of other drivers. Or at least I know how to break them politely. Also I'd like to take a passenger from time to time.

      I'd like to take my bike test, direct access ideally, and I fully understand it's safety training as well, but £700? Ain't gonna happen. I'd like to do it myself on my Vespa, and given that it's a 125 and manual I could do restricted licence test on it couldn't I? NO! I hear you say! Why not? Because bureaucracy. How dare they take away my rights? You could probably fund the NHS with the money that they'd save by not ruining my life etc..

      So enter the LML.. A copy of the Vespa Made under license in India. It's identical in all but name and some suspect quality electrics. WCPGW? Because of modern regs, they've got a cat and hence a bit slower in standard form than the PX that they're based on, until you unleash an extra 10th of a horse by drilling a heart shape in the air filter. True story.



      So anyway, given that they're identical only slower, you couldn't possibly take your bike test on one could you? WRONG AGAIN! YOU CAN!! Apparently it's hard to hit the 31mph required for the MOD 1 test, but I think the naysayers aren't trying hard enough. WCPGW?

      ​So enter an ad on an owners forum. LML, 2 stroke (essential), 2000km, 2 years old, "broken right indicator". £MEGA BARG. I bought it about 2 months ago. Unseen obvs. The only problem is that it's 120 miles away. Several idiots on shiply claimed that they could collect it for reasonable money before changing their minds on time/date/ location. The vendor is a gent, a minister no less, and has been incredibly patient. However as God's birthday is approaching he was becoming less flexible making it harder to co-ordinate with a courier. Van hire seemed expensive and something about him told me that his arms to would be too weak to help me lift it in to a van.

      FUCK IT! Train booked. I"M GONNA RIDE IT HOME. IN DECEMBER. Forecast says rain all day tomorrow. WCPGW??

      Loving home sought, must sell through no fault of its own etc.
      I have a 54000 miles (ish) 2002 K11 Micra 1.0 CVT 'S' for sale, it has factory alloy wheels and an aftermarket stereo/CD player (not too bad actually). For the uninitiated, the CVT gearbox is like a twist and go jobby, put your foot down and you whisk off surprisingly quickly for a 1.0! There are no gears as such, but there is a sport button - and it actually makes a difference! A surprising one. It being a 2002 facelift K11, you get a better ignition system (no dizzy, individual coils etc), a sleeker look, doorcards that the fabric peels off of and a CVT gearbox that is not made out of cardboard like the earlier N-CVT types. The engine is chain driven, so no belts to worry about.
      I bought this in April for mum to mooch around in as she's having a difficult time just now, a few mobility and financial issues (not a great combo!) and so I bought this for her, but also for me to mooch about in when I don't want to use the Hearse. It's no longer required as mum's situation has improved, and she's now bought herself something. So I have Nubbins back, but need the funds back from it which is sad because I really quite like it. A big surprise to me, IS NOT SHIT! My sister had these for her first few cars back when they really weren't worth anything, hers were all totally shit and she accidentally did quite well with the bangernomics philosophy, binning them when they were about to fall apart into small rusty pieces, needed a clutch etc.
      So, it has almost full-service history, it was MOT'd and serviced in March this year, it had a new full exhaust system in 04/2017 (even though only the rear box was blowing) and a full set of tyres in 08/2017, a new LHS caliper in 2016. It seems to have been very well looked after by the PO and previous owners, the PO had it since 2015 (the invoice for £2245 is in with the SH) but their dog got too big to fit in it! So, the logical thing to do was get a Skoda Roomster, cos they're roomy right? It's in the name and everything. My gain, I won the ebay auction for a smidgen over a grand, and when I picked it up the PO was very apologetic that it had an empty petrol tank, so gave me £50 for fuel - lovely people they were. The lady's husband (yes, a careful lady owner - not ragged or anything) had a collection of stuff, a Disco 3 (Shit rather than shite methinks), Volvo P1800 (gorgeous), S-Type and Merc C250d estate that had been to the moon and back. That's not mentioning the farm shite, many pieces or machinery, tractors, agricultural items I didn't know what they were etc.
      Apologies for the dirty, shit pictures - I haven’t had time to clean it yet and it still has a load of mum’s crap in there! Will clean, tidy and post better pictures when time allows - possibly Monday.


      The drivers front wing has a dent, the door card fabric has come unstuck from the card itself and there is a small crack in the front bumper RHS lower corner (wasn't there when I bought it!). Otherwise it is a very smart little thing, with low miles, no rust that I have found (or been reported at MOT time) and so should keep motoring on for some time. Mum has been all over the south west in it, I have been up to Bristol and back once a week for the last month (160 mile round trip) so have total confidence in it - it will sit at 70+ on the motorway quite nicely, although steep hills make it a bit revvy and noisy. It's a 1L though bruv, innit.
      It owes me £1K, I need to sell it to pay for university tuition fees and need the funds back for this purpose. Any shiters want a punt? Offers accepted. Is located in East Coker, Somerset and isn’t taxed or insured atm.

      I’ve been meaning to start a thread about my cars since I started posting on here, but never quite got round to it. Until now.  Although a number have appeared in odd posts across other threads I’ll try to collate updates, comings and goings in here from now on.  Even if no-one else is interested it will serve as a record of what I’ve been wasting my time on.
       
      My cars, with one exception, fall into two camps.  There are five BL/Rover products, all of which come March I will have owned for 10 years or more.  In order of acquisition:
       
      1964 Austin 1100.  Bought in 2005 for £950, which remains the most I’ve spent on a car!  Fitted with MG1100 engine and uprated cam,  Continuously MOT’d and in light use during my ownership.
       

       
      1972 Austin 1800 automatic, bought in 2006.  A Bristol car all its life (I lived there from 96-09), it was originally Wild Moss but resprayed (I believe by the original dealer) Mallard green, as it was seriously old stock at the time.  Had hand controls from new as the first owner was paralysed, it retains all the under-bonnet gubbins for this, with the battery moved to the boot.  Off road since 2010 awaiting an engine rebuild.
       

       
      1973 Austin 1100 2 door deluxe (just like SiC’s).  Rescued in 2006 from long term storage in a hanger at Bristol airport.  Limeflower with matching interior.  My everyday car from 2007 to 2010, and at various times since.  Needs bodywork, and the suspension celebrated obtaining its last MOT in 2017 by popping a pipe over the rear subframe a day later!
       

       
      1990 Maestro diesel van.  Ex South Western Electricity Board (hence the orange colour).  Bought in 2009 to help with move from Bristol to Norfolk, it was my main transport for most of the time from 2010-16, when it finally produced a MOT failure list which needed proper attention.  New sills, wheelarches and floor sections later it’s now solid underneath, and waiting for similar attention on top.  MOTd but rarely used.
       

       
      1975 Austin Allegro 1300 estate (series 1).  Bought in March 2009 from its sole previous owner and used until the MOT ran out that August.  Slumbered until 2015 when much bodywork was done and has been back on the road since early 2016, averaging  a couple of thousand miles per year.
       

       
      Now for the past few years I’ve rotated my everyday car fairly frequently (by which I mean every couple of months or so); however last April I stumbled across my 1996 Punto 55SX.  It’s got under my skin and is going nowhere, although it might have the odd month off whilst I try something else
       

       
      So that’s my basic fleet, but since deciding that 20 years working in the defence industry, with 4 hours per day commuting for the last seven of those was quite enough I’ve bought and sold the odd car to make a bit of money.  My criteria are that they must be something which interests me, or cheap and local!  Some have been seen or even sold on here (V70 T5 last year for example) but at the end of 2018 my sales stock was precisely zero.  Something had to be done.  Last Wednesday this arrived (as seen in News24 thread):
       

       
      1997 Punto 60S.  Needs a wheel cylinder for MOT but really needs the clutch release bearing replacing (and possibly the operating arm) before it’s sellable.  A friend has offered to help with this as I’ve never split an end-on gearbox before (I refer you to my collection of gearbox in sump cars above, which I am quite happy to take apart).
       
      Then on Friday this appeared:
       

       
      Vovlo 850 2.5 20v automatic in top of the range CD spec.  Cheap as the electric front seat was supposed not to work (the movement part, not the heater).  As the battery was flat on arrival I charged that before playing with it, and the seat works perfectly! There was a problem as someone's had the switch pack off before, so maybe disconnecting the battery resets the memory box through which it all works.  I'm sure one of our more learned Volvo brethren will be along shortly with an explanation.   Once I’d cleaned copious amounts of seagull poo off it I found a very nice car with an incredibly sweet sounding engine.  MOTd to November, I’d planned to have a bit of fun with this but a family member’s phase 2 V70 died spectacularly last week so she will be taking ownership next Monday
       
      And to bring us up to date this morning I brought this home:
       

       
      Very local and very cheap, owned by a 95 year old lady who gave up driving last year.  It’s a 1.2 SXi semi-auto thing; I can’t see it needing much for a MOT which will occur the week after next.  Just need to find a battery that will fit in the stupid under-scuttle location as I’m not buying a new one before the MOT result is known!

      I’m not sure if there’d be much interest in a roffle for a topless mills o’matic swede at this time of year but before I stick it down at the barn for winter, I thought I’d mention it on here...
      Its a 2006 9-3 1.8t with just under 90k miles and a good service history. It has been Mrs NMs summer chariot of choice but has now been stood down by a Berlingo diesel...the backup plan is to park it up over winter before prepping it up for sale in the spring where it would get advertised for its market value but due to the impending arrival of another toy, if someone on here wants to win it for the frankly ludicrous sum of £12.00, then step right up!!
      Good bits...
      All electrics, roof etc in good order, decent tires all round, plenty of MOT, working air con, polishes up nicely, will come with new discs and pads on the front.
      Not so good bits...
      Silly tax bracket so £48 a month to tax, occasional lambda fault which pops on EML....will reset and stay off for a month or two, slight bit of pogweasleing on the n/s front bumper where it’s had a smart repair in the past.
      Only got a few pictures to hand at the minute but if there’s any interest, I’ll stick some more up in the next day or so.
      Roffle tickets as it is are £12 each or two for £20 and the car is located near Burnley, Lancashire.
      Form an orderly queue.... 🙂
