Miserable, but almost extinct.

One day people will wonder where all these bread and butter cars went and will flock round them at car show like flies around fresh poo, shunning the sea of Minis, Sherpa Coupes and Fraud Escrotes that always seem to be on show.

Not really, the only thing I'm mildly worried about is the emissions, it doesn't run too well and seemingly its running mega rich. Its got some Japanese carburettor with a million pipes and tubes coming off it so I will have to see if I can do owt with it. I noticed yesterday that some donkey has removed any bypassed the inline pez filter, so some jet or vent is probably blocked

Just ragged this back from the MOT station. Thanks to the carb problems you have to give it a good caning to make progress but its actually better to drive than i was expecting, got that tight-but-revvy feel that low mileage japanese engines have and it feels like it weighs about 6kg. Will hopefully have a proper look at the carb tomorrow but I think its the same as a Proton 1.3 and there are new and used carbs available for those so I'm sure we can sort something.

Had a look at this tonight. I convinced myself the choke was stuck on. The symptoms are:

 

  • Emissions test spectacularly failed
  • Exhaust fumes stink to high heaven, even when the enigne is fully warmed up
  • engine starts on the button from cold but will not rev up cleanly and will not reach max revs when warm, just fluffs and struggles to get past about 3500-4000 rpm.

 

It defo seems mega rich. SO I pulled the air filter off and had a look.

Annoyingly the choke isnt stuck at all.

 

I checked for split pipes and seized up linkages and found none. I really couldnt see owt wrong and there doesnt seem to be any mixture adjustments that can be made so I whipped the carb off to inspect it.

 

One thing I noticed is that the second choke (the lower one in the picture) does not seem to open at all. I thought it was seized so when I had the carb off I inspected it. It's vacuum operated with no direct mechanical connection to the first choke. Its not seized, but there does not seem to be enough vacuum to operate it. I used another pipe to connect it directly to a redundant pipe stub on the inlet manifold and it opens then - the engine sounds fearsome when you're stood over it and the second choke opens, it revs up in a nanosecond.

I'm at a bit of a loss really. it seems to be a Mikuni-solex carb, not the same as what you get on a Proton annoyingly but I couldnt find any trakemarks or tags on it so I dont even know what model it is for buying a rebuild kit or whatever.

 

I think you can adjust the idle mixture, but there is clearly something wrong beyond that. You can see the juice trickling out of the main jet when its idling, i'm not sure the idle mixture screw is actually doing anything at all.

 

BAsically I don't really know what to do with it. i dont think I'm gonna find a Mikuni-Solex carburettor specialist who will take a look at it for me..... I might take the carb off again and dismantle it on the bench and see if I can find any split diaphragms or whatever. Any ideas among the shite community?

It's not a second choke. It's a vacuum operated secondary butterfly.

In normal operation it runs only on the primary one, which is operated by the throttle cable.

Once this is fully open, the secondary is beginning to open as well, but vacuum operated

by the secondary air valve.

There is a lockout that prevents the secondary to open under warm up.

I hazard a guess that the choke is maladjusted, so that the lockout remains in place

even when hot.

Have you had the top off of it to check the usual suspects like the needle valve and the float level?  The fuel coming out of the main sort-of flags this up.  If you want to try to squeeze it through its retest, it could probably be "jetted down" by sticking strands of fine copper wire down the main jet until it's happy; I've done this in the past for more MPGs although this sounds like it needs something closer to a bit of 0.6 MIG wire in there!

No I haven't, but I have been thinking about it all day and I reckon I'm going to remove the carb and do that, check the float level etc as best I can. Also I want to have another look at the mechanism that opens the second butterfly. Even if the whole carb is a mystery, that actuator and mech ought to be simple enough to fathom out.
