'Inbetweener' Cars / Imminant future shite/classics

Another Citroen that should make it but probably won't is the Xsara.  I reckon I see more ZXs than I do Xsaras.

Have always thought these were so bland looking, but looking at that three door one in an actual colour coupled with the passage of time leaves me thinking what a neat looking car they are in pre-facelift form.

The Felicia might do an Estelle with its value.  Keep hold of it for another 20 years to find out.

I do find it amusing that the Estelle, butt of so many jokes at the time are now fetching about 3.5k. But I think that's because it's now so utterly different to anything else on the road. The Felly on the other hand looks very very normal, not even slightly dated so I don't think it'll happen. The Favorit maybe. It's kind've half way between the two, conventional running gear with Eastern European styling. 'Cold War Chic' I call it.

By the way I will still have the Felicia in 20 years if I can.

I wonder what will happen with the Max Power era stuff from the late 90's and early 2000's when 30-somethings like you mention start looking back with spare cash. That shit was cool and people dumped some epic money into cars like this but you just don't see them any more.

Emphasis on the word was!

Come to Bognor Regis. There's millions of them still. Mainly Rover 25's, the occasional Corsa C or a Foreign registered Audi.

^^^ True enough. This was the carpark outside my local Lidl last Friday night - three cars over twenty years old, in a row.

attachicon.gifLidl Carpark - 9 Feb 2018.jpg

Discounting Lidl's propensity to attract giffers, I can't imagine ever seeing three pre-1978 cars in a row in a supermarket carpark back in 1998.

All three look capable of many miles more.

Full disclosure: yes, the one in the middle's mine and I deliberately parked it there, but even so - I think my point still stands.

This seems to be the LIDL/ALDI round here lately imagine the first 4 cars repeated into a sea of resale silver! Granted there is a pogged 405 estate in the background of the pic though!

Grimsby does seem to have streets of full on PCP though think the 'impress the neighbours' mentalitiy is well embedded even though its a poor ish town (note im not saying everyone with a lease is like that!)

I went to coventry about 4 years a back and i was blown away by how much tat was about, I think some towns just run older shit as a rule!

I get hot under the collar if i clock a mk2 mondeo ffs!

I'd love to see the scrappage scheme data broken down on a town by town basis, Round here it did seem to turn into a sea of kia's overnight.

I think the sought after cars in the future will be the sporty and less common variants of older popular chod. Most froggie stuff will never be worth much.

So here's my list until I think of some more.

  • Focus ST and similar

  • Cavalier SRi

  • Calibra

  • Omega MV6

  • Senator

  • Citroen C6

  • Citroen Xantia Activa

  • 205 GTi

  • Rover 75 V8

  • Golf VR6

  • Honda S2000

  • Astra GTE and GSI

  • Peugeot 406 Coupe V6

  • Really can't be bothered to list Mercs, Audis and BMWs. Scrap the lot.

People said that about the 2CV. I remember one coming through Bradford Car Auctions in 1991 (yea I have that kind of memory) people fell about laughing - jokes about teachers and sandals. Now look...bit Jeremy Corbyn. AX GTI have already gone up in value to some crazy money...so the Saxo VTS and R will follow and drag up the cooking examples. And that last big Citroen ...the C6 deffo! France last year on forecourt. Made in tiny numbers.

Vauxhall have quite a few potentially interesting cars that are going to have the values skyrocket in time.

First are the VXRs, for obvious reasons. The Meriva is a niche one. There's also the Astra G and Zafira A GSI, in the generation before the VXRs, along with the Corsa C 1.8 SRi, and the Astra G Coupe.

The Ford Fiesta Zetec-S will be an interesting one (the square light one not the original that's already OSF'd), sitting one below the ST. We don't really get cars like that any more, now you just stick a bodykit on a 1.0 Ecoboost and be done with it.

I bet Fiesta STs with the optional stripe package will have a bit of a premium over those that don't, too.

Thinking about it, the 'sporty' model Transits will probably have their place in the future too, if they're factory ones and not just boggo ones barried and blinged to within an inch of their lives.

I think the 2001-on Civic Type-S will be an interesting one too, being a slightly detuned five-door CTR (IIRC they have 160bhp). Completely unassuming cars aside from the '2.0' badge on the grille...

Not really, it's about what is likely to be a future classic as far as the wider motoring public is concerned. That's fair enough, really... we should probably be able to identify that sort of a trend.

The sort of stuff we tend to like probably won't feature very highly, though :-D

I have to say the 205 GTi is a ‘classic’ now with prices to match. It’s ‘inbetweener’ status probably ended in about 2010. Same with the Golf GTi Mk1 & 2 and the Escort XR3. I imagine even the early VR6s are on the up, despite being universally panned back in 1992.

I have to be honest, I can’t see ‘cooking’ Lagunas, Xantias, Mondeos, Vectras, Rover 600s etc ever being worth much. They just don’t have the following, and I’m not sure about the potential for nostalgia for them in 10/20 years time.

I can see this winter putting an end to a lot of older daily drivers. The last few winters have been relatively benign but this year looks to be heading for salted roads for the best part of 4 months.

Anything a bit crusty before is now a lot crusty!

Not so bad down here. We get a couple of cold days then it just rains every day for a week to wash all the salt away.

True that!

I actually noticed today all the salt had washed off the road outside and it was even dry! I almost felt like getting the Mercury out today conditions were that favourable.

I didn't of course, the thought of a single grain of salt touching its underside had me in a cold sweat.

It's getting harder and harder to see cars on the pre-2001 registration system, i.e. Y reg and earlier. Crazy to think Y reg is 17 years old this year.

Apart from in Southend of course, which is still pleasingly full of old stuff - not as good as it used to be, but still much better than most barren areas of the country.

It's interesting to see what is and isn't missing from the Classic Car press price guides, they don't seem to go much later than 2000, and plenty of decent, interesting or worthy of saving mid-late 90s tin is missing (along with plenty of much earlier stuff). I get they need to draw the line somewhere.

Practical Classics current online price guide is worth a read through, plenty of stuff that seems we've not mentioned included in the listing

I saw an Audi A2 in a weird ‘S-line’ spec I’d never come across before, with black wheel arches and sills and the rest of the body in red I thought it was some sort of Streetwise/Polo Dune clone until I got closer. No idea if genuine spec or some sort of one-off.

Anyway, I’ve no idea where A2s are on their depreciation curve but now is probably a good time to get a good one. They do seem to have a bit of a following from those who appreciate them - far more than the early A-class. I would guess they are a lot better built than an A-class as well.

In a similar but far more common theme, I doubt nice examples of the first generation TT will get cheaper than they are now.

Landcrabs are cheap!

Going back to "what's in and what isn't in the price guides", I subscribed to a lot of the classic car media from around 1995 to 3-4 years ago (cancelled my subscription because there were only 4-5 articles in each issue, the rest was adverts) and back in the 90's there were plenty of cars in there which at the time were just old bangers - cars such as the Allegro, Marina and mk 5 cortina which equates now to X-reg to around 02/52.

Personal tastes also influence what we think should be saved. The list of cars that I would rather scrap than rescue would make a few shiters' eyes water (It's quite a short list)

A2 S-Line was never offered in the UK. It was very likely a DIY badging effort with big wheels and some imaginative paintwork.
