Daniel H
I've been after this for quite a while, a 1978 Vanden Plas 1500 in tara green, it was owned by some army major (hence the flagpole on the bonnet) and has done 26,000 since new It cost £70 and I will be picking it up next Saturday
Mr_Bo11ox
TOP LEVEL SHITE! My very first car that I had on the road was one of those, tara green too (well it was tara green till someone sprayed it lilac).
r.welfare
How many extra mph on the top end does the Ferrari badge add?
retrogeezer
How many extra mph on the top end does the Ferrari badge add? That put the price up by £69 Richard!! Only joking, very sweet purchase. When my friends and I first started driving, one of them had an Allegro 1750 tc like this one but Purple..cool!! - it did shift. http://www.austin-rover.co.uk/images/ownerwood_09.jpg I always quite liked those Equipe ones too. Nice!! Photos shamelessly pinched from here: http://www.austin-rover.co.uk/index.htm?memberwoodf.htm
55bloke
I really don't like those things (sorry) but that has to be a bloody good 70 quid's worth!
Baz
Looks like a bargain to me....I'd remove the Ferrari badge, look for some original hubcaps & trim-rings, and leave it at that....Cool

Guest greenvanman
When my friends and I first started driving, one of them had an Allegro 1750 tc like this one but Purple..cool!! - it did shift. My first car was very nearly a purple 1750 Allegro. It was being sold by a mate's older brother for the princely sum of £75. There was much rust, but I was seduced by the numbers 1, 7, 5 and 0 and, erm, the purple paintwork. Dad said it was a wreck and I'd more than likely kill myself in it. A week later I became the owner of an 850cc Renault 5L complete with umbrella-handle gearchange, fabric sunroof and three hubcaps - all this for £50! And while I didn't kill myself, damage of a different kind had been done...
Baz
A week later I became the owner of an 850cc Renault 5L complete with umbrella-handle gearchange, fabric sunroof and three hubcapsFar lovelier than a Allegro though!
Guest greenvanman
No argument there Baz. I had another two old shape 5s after that so they must have been doing something right!
wuvvum
Is that a manual or an auto? I bought a VP 1500 auto from a classic car auction for £62 some years ago - wonderfully comfortable car and surprisingly quiet compared to the lesser Aggros but dreadfully slow thanks to the appalling AP auto 'box, which would change up way too early (3000rpm in kickdown ) and had a freewheel on first gear so when crawling along in traffic you had absolutely no engine braking. Very relaxing to drive if you weren't in a hurry though, and went round corners better than you'd'a thunk. I reckon that green machine has got to be a bargain for 70 squid. tux
Undoubtedly a bargain! Reckon you gotta put a flag on that flagpole mind!
Milford Cubicle
What a beauty, and bargainous at the price - especially since prices of Allegros, especially rarer ones like the VDP are mysteriously creeping up.
Mr H Sceptre
The bargain of 2007 so far I'd say.
AnthonyG
The bargain of 2007 so far I'd say.Defintely , given that it's scrap value's not much lower. Good rescue Daniel H!
Daniel H
Originally owned by a Squadron Leader Frost from 1978 to 2002, it was sold to a pub landlord (the man from the ‘you’ve been tangoed’ adverts BTW) who used it for 2 years until it failed its MOT in 2005. It was then parked up outside his holiday bungalow for about a year.

MrRegieRitmo
I don't remember this thread, I must have missed it the first time around. It's easier than you might think!Car looks very nice! Did the VDP go on as long as the other Allegro's or did it not make it beyond the series II? (seeing as I can't recall ever seeing one with the final shape rear lights!) Daniel H
Unfortunately Squadron Leader Forst is now dead, but I have got into contact with his daughter who has given me some old photos of the car, this is my favourite one And my attempt at recreating the badge laden grille He painted engine red for no apparent reson £3 from bootsale steering wheel cover added Also found out the doorbell operated a red light on the parcel shelf which he used if someone drove too close to him, the wiring for its still there so it should still work, just need a light
Guest
I love this - whatever happened to the great trend of old people adding extras to their cars? The red light on the parcel shelf is a brilliantly crap idea - I absolutely love it - you must recreate it!RIP Squadron Leader Frost - your car and its accessories will live on! chester drawers
Not only did he fuse his accessories, he added luggage labels for identification purposes. Splendid! The switch next to the rev counter is particularly intriguing. What does it do? Looking at it I'm reminded of the chap who’d automated his living room curtains with a war surplus motor designed to drive bomb bay doors (TV documentary a few years back). Quite a pelmet was required to hide that!
Daniel H
The switch turns the rev conter on and off, I'm dead certain the switch is a war surplus one (possibly off an airplane)
Daniel H
Even though there are 2 factory fitted ashtrays on either side of the dash, he still fitted his own with a wartime dog tag stuck on
