2003 Citroën Relay 2.2 HDI LWB van - £400

This is the next vehicle to go in the current bout of fleet rationalisation.  It's basically taken on the role of shed since the Movano went, and vanly duties have been carried out by the Transit.  I've decided I'm going to keep just the Transit for the moment, with the added bonus that the fact that it's half the size of the Relay might finally give me the kick up the arse I need to actually get rid of some of the tat that I've just been shunting from van to van for ages now.

The van itself is a fairly unremarkable workhorse, although that's not necessarily a bad thing..  The 2.2 HDI engine is quite adequate for the size of the van - it's not got the grunt of the bigger 2.8, but it revs harder and lower gearing helps to compensate for the smaller engine so it's not that much slower really.  I've not wound it up but it'll sit at 80 happily enough.

Mechanically it's been good - starts first time every time, battery keeps its charge even when stood for weeks, engine sounds good, and even the gearbox is pretty good by Sevel standards - there's a slight crunch into 4th if you rush the change, but other than that it's spot on.  Brakes are good, steering feels OK, the only real issue it has is a noisy front wheel bearing - I've bought one but don't have the facilities to fit it myself, and haven't got round to taking it to my friendly local garage.  Front tyres are good, rears less so - in fact the nearside rear really needs replacing as it's slightly out of shape and can get a bit of a wobble on occasionally, usually at about 30-40mph after accelerating away from a stop.

Electrics are also mostly fine.  It has remote locking which works, and electric cab windows.  The heater fan doesn't work on the highest setting, but that's about the only thing I'm aware of.  Heater gets decently warm, helped by the fact that there's a full plywood bulkhead so it's only having to heat the cab.

The bodywork is again typical of Sevel vans, in that it looks presentable enough from the outside (although with the common paint issues on the bonnet, and a bit of not particularly well done tarting up on the wheels and sills), but underneath is not quite so good.  The chassis itself looks sound enough, and I jacked it up on all four jacking points with no issues whilst swapping the wheels around, so it's not properly rotten, but it is getting a bit frilly round the edges, inner sills, inner arches &c, and will definitely need some welding for its next test.  It's MOT'd until the end of June though so a little while before you have to worry about this.

OK, due to popular* demand I've attempted some photos of the underside.  They're a bit shite because 1) taking photos of the underneath of vehicles is difficult unless they're on ramps, B. I'm a rubbish photographer and iii. I took them with my phone in a rush before leaving for work.

I've taken some of the more obvious dodgy bits and then a few more general ones of the underside.  There's a hole in one of the outer sills, although I'm not sure that would be an MOT fail as it's not within 30cm of anything important.  There are various bits on the inner sills and a couple of dodgy-looking bits on outriggers.  On the plus side, the main chassis rails and the floor look OK, as do spring hangers and jacking points, and the exhaust appears to be fairly new.

Putting this into prospective, was going to advertise my Transit van with 2 weeks MOT and needing a metric fuck tonne of welding up for sale this morning for £500. Then, after checking current prices, I reckon I could probably get £650 for it, and trying to find any van of this size with a few months MOT is nigh on impossible for less than about a grand.

It's ridiculous this is still for sale.
