Honda today unveiled plans to introduce EMOJI registration plates for car buyers in the UK, releasing images of the world’s first official emoji number plate on the Honda Civic Type R.

Honda’s plans for emoji registration plates are in response to demand from younger car buyers across the UK, and initial talks are planned with the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency in an endeavour to exclusively launch the new plates in early 2017.

In research conducted with UK consumers earlier this year, 96% of respondents aged under 30 indicated a preference for emoji plates over the traditional car license plate. 97% of those questioned admit they now use emoji faces as their main method of expressing an emotion or idea in texts and instant messages.

All this talk of Sierras has got my sentimental head on.

I was brought home from the hospital in FATHA's Sierra pictured (rather blurry) here. Was a 1.6L Mills-o-matic with dangly mirrors. Lasted until 1996 according to the DVLA. Maestro next door was a VDP. A very very badly made one.

Also I've stumbled across another Mk1, in red - this time it's an estate. It's parked up in a garden about a minute's walk from mine. Pictures to follow!

I was walking past R J Gough's (tools) in Dublin city centre this morning and popped in to see if they sold individual Imperial spanners. They replied "what size?" (First grin). "1/4" AF". Duly served and after parting with 3 yoyos, I go on my way.

Outside I look at the no-name spanner:

(Second grin). "W GERMANY". I love shops that time forgot.

It's raining and generally a shitty day so I can't do anything outside, usually this would be a grump but I've been sat watching the wildlife that visits my garden, it's a hive of activity today the various visitors are taking it in turns to visit my feeders which is nice to watch

Today, me and a chap I used to work with went to the Hovercraft museum in Lee-on-Solent and ha da facinating afternoon looking at all sorts of modes of obsolete mass- and personal transportation. Well worth the £7 entry fee with loads of knowledgable and enthusiastic volunteers on hand to talk to without having information forced down my throat.

Here are some highlights:

Hope its not too pic-heavy, I'd really recommend going as they are being threatened by developers as it occupies some very lucrative real estate on the seafront and its very interesting. Would be worth a visit by the Solent Shiters and can arrange if anyone is interested, plenty of free parking and open 10-4 every saturday this year, instead of practically never as in previous years. I wish I'd gone earlier as I only got 2 hours (its way bigger than I thought) and had to rush past a few things.

A shame I didn't get a pic of the Vauxhall Ecotec powered shite-r-craft which is capable of 52 knots (!) apparently.

Too bad they've got an absurdly high loading height. How bodged are the parcel shelf strings on yours? Had the joyful task of replacing a rear bulb yet?

Rear bulbs are a doodle. Did the indicator which wasn't too bad.

Missing one of the parcel shelf lugs so wobbles all over the place so haven't got the strings attached.

Oh and the scanguage doesn't work on it. Got a suspicion that being 1999 it isn't obd2.

I guess you're lucky then; I find on mine that the clips that hold the bulb holder to the housing a total pain in the ass. The nearside is way worse for some reason. The parcel shelf on these seem to be woefully inadequate, even the silver one I had with 16k miles only had one of the original strings left and even that was frayed quite badly. The little lug/hinge things always seem to look as though they've come off and have been reattached with way too much glue.

In 1996 OBD2 was mandatory for all cars made in the US that were to be sold in the US and likewise in 2001 in the UK. With these being so similar to the Geo Metro (many other names available) it might have translated to EU models by 1999. On my 2002 it's under the dash by the drivers knee. Kneel on the ground with the door open and stick your head under the dash. It's black in a dark space so easier to find that way.

Got the connector but it won't talk to scan gauge.

Did you follow the instructions exactly and what exactly is it doing? If it's got the connector I don't see any reason for it not to work as it's a standardised system. Contact the help team, they were great with me when I had a bad motherboard.

We've all been there I think at some point. Buy a car and realise you haven't seen another in a long while then while driving you see loads. I honestly can't say in the miles I've covered so far in the Volvo have I seen another early shape 440. Seen facelifted ones but can count them on one hand. Still see a fair few 200 and 700 series knocking about too. Not such a grin though when scrapyards haven't had one in for years!

Following a day working on the PPEs suspension I have woken up this morning with a useless left arm, a back that wont work properly and legs that feel like someone has beaten them with a stick. normally this would be a post for the Grumpy thread but I had so much fun fixing the car and the sense of achievement in doing something that would have cost £100s if a garage had done it that I am happy to put up with the after effects.

Bought an old bike from a very nice local eBay gent a good while back. He messaged me this morning to ask if I wanted a 'few old bike bits for nothing' and was kind enough to bring them round...

On top of that (stupid computer/phone playing up hence separate post, sorry) the Fiesta went to a local lad and I cleaned the Laguna, which has come up a treat after cleaning all the shit from behind the exterior rubber bits.
