Another batch from last week.

This CX is one of my regulars, and is looking worse for wear these days.

Another regular, I like these pre-facelift W124 estates, especially in this colour. Unlike the CX it's remained pretty mintola over the years. I would actually like one of these but they're no doubt worth much folding in this condition.

Brixton drug dealer barge. Clamped due to no tax, been there a while now but looks good apart from the knackered front bumper.

On a different day I wasn't finding much then wallop!

Proton and JDM something or other. My friendly mechanic in Herne Hill found this beauty for one of his customers. His VW T2 camper keeps breaking so he needed a stop gap. I've expressed an interest of course.

A pair of GF 626s. OK they're boring but I like them and it's my thread, so there.

Another batch from last week.

This CX GTi is one of my regulars, and is looking worse for wear these days.

attachicon.gifCX GTi 2.jpg

attachicon.gifCX GTi.jpg

Couple of things suggest it's not a GTi or GTi Turbo -

1. The bootlid badge

2. Wrong bonnet lid

DVLA confirms the badge is correct - a diesel. First registered August 1989, it would be one of the last saloons to be built as production finished that year (estates carried on until 1991).

Pity the bootlid spoiler's missing.

Can't understand why the owner has fitted it with the T-slot metric wheels and tyres (which are way more expensive, and were specified for the petrol turbos only).

Oh yes, dunno why I thought it was a GTi. The rather long bootlid badge says it all...

It actually looks OK in the pics, but up close there's scratches aplenty and rust bubbling through, the worst being around the sunroof (which in my opinion are a pointless invention). Just somewhere else for rust to form!

Sunroof rust is pretty much terminal for any car, but particularly for a CX. My 635CSi had the same problem.

Fortunately my CX has no sunroof.

Loving this thread Rob, has anyone stopped to ask why you're photographing their shitty old Proton?

I think the guy wouldn't find it odd as he's into old cars himself, although he tends to run them into the ground...be interesting to see how long the Proton lasts as he's only owned it a few months.

Anyway, more stuff.  The following batch were in Bromley within a mile of eachother.

Have those wheels ever been cleaned?

No doubt these two are owned by the same old fella.  The Volvo was being used as a shed.

This BSA was right in just every way.  The guy who owned it was a bloody nice bloke too, proper gent.

  • 3 weeks later...

Spottings from the past few weeks.  German chod first.

450 SLC.  4.5 litre V8, right?

Even bigger, a 5 litre SL.  These just exude class, I'd love one.  Added benefit of being on a G-plate which I like, as I'm odd like that.

Tatty and beige, what's not to like.

Opposite ends of the E21 spectrum.  I've seen this 323i Baur before and it's mint.  Doesn't live on this street which is probably a good thing, must be garaged I reckon.

I've known this one for 14 years now.  Always parked there and has got steadily worse over the years.  Still going though.

Seen within 30 seconds of a 20 minute spotting session.  TOO EASY.  Not far from Stockwell bus garage, which is pic worthy in itself (must do that next time I'm there).

Check out the quality fit of the rag top!  The wheels on the maroon one used to be pleasant mix of white and rust flecks, so the owner has ignored Junkman's DNP mantra.  The rest of it still looks good though.

Same road, same bloke no doubt.

Not the same bloke as this is 2 miles away.  That cover must be doing it no favours...

Safrane with 234,000 miles!

Down at the arches...I know the chap who owns this.  Always plagued with issues so seeing it running well is a bit of an event.

post-5013-0-35951100-1518199037_thumb.jpg

A different day when I was seeing nowt I almost turned back and missed this.  But a glance down the road spotted a familiar rear end. 3.0 24v no less.

Yes. Both big V8's and both old-skool powerful. You have to be a little careful with these, as they have no traction control, no stability control, no limited slip, nothing. Don't think any of them came with ABS either.. possibly very late models. Just an astonishingly grunty V8, a fairly tough autobox, and some independent suspension on the rear wheel drive. Despite being planted, solid and well engineered, they are a bit of a handful and you can get it very wrong with these if you give it too much in the wrong circumstances.

The 0-60 isn't so impressive by today's standards, but the 60-120 time is staggeringly fast. Utterly effortless to cruise at three-figure speeds all day.

And all the better for it no doubt. I've always hankered after an 80s Merc with a big engine, but that ship has probably sailed unless I can be arsed to save some money. A W126 with a 4.2 or 5.0 V8 would be my choice, not only for the engine but for the sheer longness of the thing!

80's Mercs with large engines can still be had for under a grand if you look for them, and if you're willing to accept a non-sought-after model. W124's are still very cheap, and you can pick up a well-looked-after E300 for sub £1k without too much issue, but it will be a lowish spec model with cloth seats and no extra buttons.

Still a remarkably fast car though.

More south London shite.  I did a spotting session in Brockley a few weeks back.  I rarely go there even though it's just a few miles away, but by gum there's a rich seam of shite over there.  I spent two hours wandering the streets and captured this lot.

First off, I parked up and saw this.  CBA fixing it.

1 minute later my favourite of the day.

The Paddy Hopkirk roof rack sets it off a treat, and probably has a practical use as opposed to scene.

Crusty but trusty W123, and a big liability.

Classy.

As I approached this 2002 another bloke was literally crossing the street, camera poised.  Oh how we laughed (in the way only two socially awkward 40-somethings can).
