Shitescan; preservation of fading old newsprint is our concern

One for the hardcore - a copy of Jalopy #1 from May 1992.

Jalopy 1 ebay july 2018.jpg

£4 bid start, or £10 Buy It Now.

Looks in decent nick; and given that a torn and slightly ink-stained copy of Issue #1 set me back £15 at the start of the year, this appears not too batshit. Seller seems to actually know what he's selling, too.

Belatedly I have returned to this sysiphean task...

Mucho respek', good sir... I envy you not one jot, but I'm deeply grateful for your travails here on the preservation front.

If you're still desiring a copy of Issue 1 as some sort of recompense, bang me your address and I'll get one in the post to you!

Issue 23 is hot off the scanner for your reading pleasure!

Anxious to impress the family, I demonstrated the cigar lighter, producing much smoke from under the dashboard as the wiring heated up...

... my increased expertise in the field of car bodywork repair had lead to the development of a totally new substance to replace metal that had completely rusted away - a mixture of wire mesh, screwed-up bits of newspaper and a few tubs of filler.

Another haul of Jalopy mags has appeared on eBay, for any of you completionists out there:

Jalopy eBay bundle Feb 2019.jpg

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/old-car-magazines-jalopy-x-14-all-in-great-condition-from-1993/372598570727

Issues in this bundle appear to be:

  • Issue 10 - March 1993 (Mini Profile)
  • Issue 11 - April 1993 (BLzebub: Rover SD1 Profile)
  • Issue 12 - May 1993 (Allegro 20th Anniversary)
  • Issue 13 - June 1993 (Ford Escort Profile)
  • Issue 14 - July 1993 (Super Sizzlin' Summer Soft Top Special - Triumph Herald)
  • Issue 15 - August 1993 (Old Ton-Ups)
  • Issue 16 - October 1993 (Austin A30/A35 Profile)
  • Issue 17 - January 1994 (Minimal Motors: Trabant/Reliant Kitten)
  • Issue 18 - February 1994 (Grace, Pace & Rust - Jaguar XJ6/XJ12 Profile)
  • Issue 19 - March 1994 (The IMPossible Dream - Hillman Imp Profile)
  • Issue 21 - June 1994 (70s Citroens)
  • Issue 22 - July 1994 (Reliant - Your Plastic Friend? Robin Profile)
  • Issue 23 - August 1994 (Big Fords: Zephyr/Zodiac Profile)
  • Issue 28 - March/April 1995 (Ancient vs. Modern: Triumph Herald & Skoda Rapid shootout)

Now, this is tricksy as I AM a completionist, and it DOES contain the two issues (Issue 12 and Issue 13) which I happen to require in order to finish off my run of Britain's smallest, dullest motoring mag from #1 to #31.

However, it also contains twelve issues which I have no particular need of, and in some cases already have one or two duplicate copies knocking around.

HNNNNNNGH.

Bids invited from £25. P&P is a mildly outrageous £6.95. So £32 all in (assuming no other bids).

Hypothetically speaking, if I were to bid on this, and hypothetically won, would anybody be hypothetically interested in taking the twelve duplicate copies off my hands for £15, posted? It really is only # 12 and #13 I need here. Hypothetically.

(Working out at £1.25 a copy delivered, this is less than the original cover price - even some 25 years on. OMG BARGAINZ.)

Also available are some cheerily confusing separate listings for another two copies of Jalopy, from the same seller:

  • Issue 8 - January 1993 (Old Frauds: Cortina Capers)

Jalopy #8 Cover - Jan 1993.jpg

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/old-car-magazine-jalopy-real-world-motoring-from-jan-1993-good-condition/372597470366

  • Either Issue 9 - February 1993 (VW Beetle Profile) [which is what the listing says] OR
  • Another copy of Issue 11 - April 1993 (BLzebub: Rover SD1 Profile) [which is what the listing photograph depicts]

Jalopy #11 Cover (April 1993).jpg

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/car-magazine-JALOPY-REAL-WORLD-OF-MOTORING-FEBRUARY-1993/372597474215

Both have a reassuringly low start, though do have a bid each on them (not me, promise).

Kinda makes you wonder why he didn't job-lot all of them together, though - unless he started listing them separately, did the first two, thought 'bollocks to this lark' and just fired the last fourteen up together...

Cor, ride me sideways - are dog-eared copies of Jalopoppy the new Bitcoin or summat?

HFM?? Seventy quid once postage is factored in? A fiver an issue? Bloody hell.

With seven hours left to go, I'm afraid I'm oot for this run.

Surprisingly, after a complete dearth of copies up for sale for some months, we now have the floodgates well and truly opened:

Issue 1: May 1992

I'm now waiting breathlessly to see if copies of the fabled Issues 12 & 13 appear in this guy's listings next... ooh, I'm all of a-flutter. Bidding thus far seems brisk, mind.

(Looks like he got fed up listing them seperately, too.)

Blimey, looks like the same seller is indeed clearing out a near-complete run of Jalopy mags on eBay. Same lad as the above listings, but now all bundled into groups of three (or even four).

Here we have:

Issues 12 ,13 & 14 (May, June & July 1993)

Jalopy #12 & 13.jpg

Jalopy #14.jpg

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Magazine-JALOPY-VOL-1-No-12-13-14-May-June-July-1993-lot-of-3/333082039449

I'll be putting in bid on these bad boys - 12 and 13 are the ones I need to finish off my own collection. Apologies to any other shiters bidding on this, but I will destroy you.

[EDIT: won them. Assuming they arrive, I'll finally have a complete Jalopy library - which my 13-year-old self would doubtless be very pleased about]

Issues 15, 16 & 17 (August & October 1993, January 1994)

Jalopy #15 & 16.jpg

Jalopy #17.jpg

(With such an erratic print schedule, you can see why it was kinda tricksy keeping track of this fine publication on the newsagent shelves...)

Issues 18, 19 & 20 (February, March & April 1994)

Jalopy # 18 & 19.jpg

Apparently, that's all the copies of Jalopy that the seller has - so he's listed an almost-complete run of all the A5 issues from #1 through to #27, barring #2. The mag went A4 in 1995 for its final four issues, so either he doesn't have these or he just hasn't found them yet in with all the others.

Not sure whether anyone's that bothered other than myself, but I'm posting these pics up more for the covers/issues/dates to use as a handy-dandy reference than anything else.

Oh, and I'll have further duplicate copies to offer out here shortly, if anyone's interested.

Also available: the not-quite-successor to Jalopy (though involving some of the same publishing team and contributors), a complete run of Real Classics mag from 1997 - 1998

Starting bid of £4 for all ten issues (I have 1-7)

Real Classics 1 & 2.jpg

Real Classics 3 & 4.jpg

Real Classics 4 & 6.jpg

Real Classics 7 & 8.jpg

Real Classics 9 & 10.jpg

Over twenty years since publication, but still very much 'analogue AutoShite' - browsing those covers, it's interesting to see that it's still the same sort of thing that would make many of us on these pages come over all moist...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Magazine-REAL-CLASSICS-VOL-1-No-1-to-No-10-August-1997-lot-of-10/333091902474

(Massive LOL at a Mk2 Cortina for sub-£600 - interesting to see how some things change, while others stay the same.)

That's a cracking write-up (apparently Cog Sr, in his floppyhaired Art College days, very much hankered after a Bond Bug instead of his '61 Beetle) - was this scanned from an edition of Car mag, perchance?

Never read it back in its heyday, but having caught a few Russell Bulgin and Phil Llewellin articles reprinted in Classic Motoring Review (RIP), I kinda feel I might have missed out a bit...

More of this sort of thing (as I appear to have inadvertently hijacked the thread with pointless Jalopy listings off eBay).

Not hi-jacked at all DC, anyone can post old road tests and magazine stuff on here anytime. Trigger used to be good at this sort of thing. I love reading old road tests and articles from the 70s and 80s. Unfortunately my stacks of old 70s and 80s mags were lost years ago.

Good old Jalopy magazine. I remember it well as I used to purchase it from the newsagents near Tonbridge station on my way to retaking my A-Levels (which I also made a second balls up of). There might just be a few issues kicking round my parents' house somewhere although in the back of my mind I think they went to the, cough, cough, recycling. I will check on my return back to Blighty soon.

Rather enjoying the download issues.

Another copy of Jalopy Issue 2 listed on eBay yesterday:

Jalopy #2 Apr 2019.jpg

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jalopy-car-magazine-volume-1-no-2/333158509175

Being sold by the same fella who listed the almost-complete run back in February; so it looks like he HAD got a complete run of all the A5 issues from #1 - #27.

Missing its original 'I [Heart] My Jalopy' sticker - but, impressively, repro versions are sometimes available.

I really should take a pic of my finally-completed collection...

Another copy of Jalopy Issue 9 just listed on the 'Bay this afternoon, should anyone be needing one: dating from February 1993.

Heartening to know that 26 years later, grown men are still dicking around with shagged Marina vans...

It's good to keep the old traditions alive, yeah?

It's been a while, tis true, but it appears that another member of the general public is renouncing their shite-loving ways and/or finally clearing out their attic - meaning that  copies of Issue 1, 2, 5 and 6 of Britain's smallest, dullest motoring mag (all from 1992) are now available on the open market.

20200114_210252.jpg.a07c4288008963d1b6732461d588b3aa.jpg

Any use to anyone here? Bidding's been brisk, mind - only listed late this afternoon, and already we've gone from a fiver starting bid to a heady £26.35... plus postage. Eeep.

BUT Issue 2 does come complete with the infamous 'I♡my Jalopy' sticker, so you gotta ask yourself... what price perfection?

Further cast-iron* irrefutable* proof that back-issues of Jalopy are rapidly* becoming the next Bitcoin:

Another copy of Issue #1 currently on the 'Bay - listing began at £4.49 yesterday evening, and less than 24 hrs later it's MOAR THAN DUBBLED M9 into DOUBLE DIGITS TERRITORY OMFG.

If it keeps going north like this, then by the time the auction closes on Sunday it'll be topping out at more than six Renault Lagunas (£300).

?

Hard to believe that we're now starting to think about the Allegro's fiftieth anniversary - yet back when this fine tome came hot off the presses, you still could have picked one up that was just under ten years old...

Been sorting the shite out of the cellar and found a copy of the Groaniad from April 3rd, 1988. Two adverts caught my eye.

Apologies if these are sideways.

Forgot to add that I bought a new car that year on a similar deal. Having driven a Metro, the Renault dealer not being interested in me buying an R5, I bought a 205 Junior.

After absolutely nothing Jalopy-related on eBay for over a year, suddenly a surprising glut hit my saved search list:

7941535_Screenshot_20210509-1823102.thumb.png.cc6e4299a16e44962358559c28dd2f1b.png

Despite the dates given being a decade out, it's still a tempting run of Issues 1,3,4 and 5.

Best offers invited, hey?

Amazingly, between taking the screenshot and going back to find the actual links, the listings have disappeared...

Sold? Taken down as potentially corrupting to minors? Seller decided they simply couldn't live without them?

Yow. Who would have thunk that Joypal could reach such dizzying heights?

Forget Dogecoin, this is where the smart money's going.

Still cursing the fact that I threw away my collection of Lapjoy when I separated with my now ex wife. There were  at least 8 copies, but they were later editions in 1993, so not as valuable as those above listed on ebay. I remember comments such as  "corners like a bent shopping trolley" and I may be tempted to start a collection if I can find any. Great mag.

I wonder what that was describing? Back in the day, I owned a  couple of Mk1 Renner Cinqs in succession. I still remember one night when I was designated driver for the night and had a car full of pissed mates on the return journey. My good pal Darren (RIP fella) questioned why the car was 'rolling so f****ing much in the corners'. My response was TADTS, obviously. Within a mile I'd had to pull in, eject him from the back of the car and allow him to vomit his evening of fun into the layby. Nice.
