cros
Let's make it shorter than the car on which it's based. Or go to lots of trouble to do a proper job then sell hardly any. Best of all, bring the fucker out in the last year of production, maybe do a couple of versions and make one really ugly. If you were going for a Vanguard it would be a crime not to opt for the optional Ferguson tractor-derived diesel engine. Cable operated overdrive would be nice too. adw1977, eddyramrod, danthecapriman and 8 others
cros
When I was a kid a bloke called Jim Davenport used to visit us in his prototype Road Rover. He worked at the Solihull and ran it for a while but had to hand it back when he'd done. I think they made 40 of them, but I was eight and my memory is less than perfect. My old man had an Austin half ton pick up at the time as work and family (4 of us) transport. By the standards of the BMC commercial the Rover was horribly crude. If you have a lot more money than sense you'll be able to buy a production Road Rover soon. The media never stop banging on about how our industry lags behind the foreign competition, and it has to be said that Land rover have been tardy with the development of this model. Anyway, the best bit was that Jim, despite being in the motor business, had little interest in mastering the Austin's column change so when he drove it on some errand for my father I was required to change gear. His two daughters and my brother were also wedged into the cab. On the return journey Jim took full charge of the controls, and I was seated on his right to try to alleviate the squash. NorfolkNWeigh
That 164 is so half arsed it could have been done by Farnham. In about 87/88 the Works Lancia Team had a couple of Thema Estates as Chase cars on the RAC, they were bloody quick and sounded like a rally car complete with flames from the exhaust.Which made me wonder if an 8.32 existed...Of course there is , but only one for Snr Agnelli.Perhaps it replaced his 130 brickwall, Essex V6, Barry Cade and 8 others

uk_senator
That 164 is so half arsed it could have been done by Farnham. I suspect whoever did that 164 estate was also involved in `that` XJR-8 estate, he certainly seems to have the same Merc E-Class estate attachment ideas anyway. I`ll see your half arsed Farnhams & raise you an Avon: Of course, converting XJ`s, with their rumps that taper downwards AND inwards, is never gonna be easy, but, Jaguar proved it could be done stylishly with a bit of jiggling: As did Lynx: mercrocker, Yoss, Sheefag and 3 others

dollywobbler
Reliant Robin Estate. A whopping 5 ft3 extra loadspace on saloon. Estates are about more than sheer capacity though. The Robin is proper estate-car shaped. My Honda S-MX can cart around a lot more stuff than a Rover 75 estate, in a smaller footprint, because it's actually boxy. Also, I love Robin estates... djimbob, Eddie Honda and R&A Autos

DVee8
The old 505 was unusual in that the second set of seats were a bit higher up (I don't know if any other cars are like that), any rate I remember travelling in the back of a 505 wagon aged 13ish and being able to see over the front passengers' heads. My modern Nissan X-trail has rear seats higher then the front seats. It's called "stadium seating" In Nissan speak. Uncle Jimmy
We should not forget the humble Citroen ZX, which gives all the benefits of the saloon (cheap, comfy, frugal, park anywhere, easy to maintain) with useful extra capacity for farm work etc:04-Apr-17 - ZX estate with branches.jpg My ZX 1.9 estate is my chariot of choice for long distance commuting:10-Apr-17 - ZX by Brynmadog.JPG10-Apr-17 - ZX on mountain in Wales.JPG and the AS choice for polishing at the Field of Dreams...09-Sep-17 - Beko has polished the ZX.JPG09-Sep-17 - a polished panel on the ZX.JPGAgreed; the ZX/405 is high up in the stakes. I think the Volvo 145/245 just edges into first place, the 7/9 series Volvos tie with the Granada in second and the W124 comes in third. ZX/405 fourth. BX/CX coming in at fifth. The Volvos cheat a bit as technically they aren't the best but in British (Swedish) fashion they have occupied the top spot through keen advertising and an ability to enter the social lexicon. After all the word Volvo is synonymous with a practical estate car, in the same way that Land Rover is with practical off road vehicle.
