We looked at having them from one of those that does them 'free'. Nothing is free......

It works but you need to buy them outright - that's when YOU can gain rather than the company that does them free.

Oh...........I hate the look of the things too!

There's no-one here like that (yet) so it's all coming out of my wallet - it's mine, mine, all mine! Muah ha ha cough, splutter.

There is meant to be some sort of government hand out but, as usual, it's about a year's worth of bureaucracy to wade through and almost nothing left by the time you've paid all the official bribes charges.

Speaking of which, the electric co. came out to check it all before we started. 2 guys, 10 minute's looking, a bit of paperwork and... that'll be a grand, fuck you very much.

I'm not keen on the look of the thing either but, meh.

Maybe the next generation version will involve simply retiling your roof with special tiles??

They already exist! Sadly they look shit, cost a fortune and don't work very well.

Oh go on tell me you have bought either a mulsanne or a silver spirit. I can't be the only one ! They are pretty big but I can still get it in the double garage at home.

Merc cl500. probably less reliable and worse on fuel than the rr. See grumpy thread for pics.

All part of the fun though isn't it, trying different stuff.

I'm in a buying frenzy at the moment and have just put in an offer on a pre-facelift Mk3 Cav. Not the most sensible thing to do before all the Christmas expense but bollocks to it, I'm on a roll.

A grey grill cav? fast becoming a spotters delight, I saw a 1990 G-reg CD saloon yesterday.

It should be, but someone has colour coded it at some point so I'll have to reverse that if I get it. And they've facelifted the bootlid. But it does have the original CD alloys which I think are GR9. Not the mintiest of examples but then it isn't up for much.

CND FLEET UPDATE: All Road legal vehicles R mechanically fucked.

Scimitar GTE Needs Gearbox Rebuild, Barely moves in reverse all other gears sound like death.

Rebel Van's engine has done its big ends, with only 30,000 miles on the clock. it was fitted with a spare engine on Sunday is currently awaiting a new thermostat housing as the old one cracked while being swapped over.

Crossflow still needs a carb rebuild as it did in May.

Straight 6 Coupe needs a new starter motor and a choke cable though it does now seem to be charging with its new regulator,

Had to borrow the old mans jag as for the first time none of my old heaps are running reliably.

Just got home (Oop North) after two days working and driving in London. Am so glad I went in an auto. London traffic in a car with a clutch must be hell!

Having said that, the M6 was horrible from Birmingham up until Preston....

Getting old ain't funny.

I've broken my LR and awaiting bits so have been scooting around in my mate's 109, which happens to live here at the mo as he's bought more shit to fill his garden with. Anyway I went to Grantham this morning and couldn't resist a shot at the "on death's doorstep" former Aveling Barford works.

Have just been for a 25-mile drive in the XM. Gosh it's good! Not perfect - the trim rattles and leaky sunroof ruin that score - but bloody lovely nonetheless. I'm treating it to a specialist visit on Friday. I'm hoping for supervision as I replace the offside strut top and try to find the source of free play in that hub. Chap is also hopefully going to weld up the back of the sill - also offside.

Spent the day at the Pratical Classics workshop as they wanted the Applejack Allegro for some pictures. Had a really nice day out, ending up pushing some cars around afterwards and assisting with the oil change on an Alfa 156 (which is a bastard of a job).

Today's test drive didn't go well.

We were standing it the showroom waiting for the car to be brought round, nice shiny red met,on opening the drivers door the look of disappointment on my face. The seats, the carpets, the over mats, the door checks, the door panels, the lower dash, the center console, the roof lining. All Ikea bag Yellow.

The 1 owner must have been 25+klem as the drivers seat was flat no support or side bolster.

I didn't even bother to drive it. 6 years old and 54k miles.

Fixed the bonnet catch on the Insight. Jammed solid by rust and crud, feathers and grease.

post-17481-0-67901300-1417017187_thumb.jpg

Some of it is stainless steel, some zinc coated and some"painted" and rusty. Soaked in petrol, scrubbed and then soaked in WD40.

I have been a bit thorough with this because the last green car I had* died when the bonnet smashed the windscreeen after the catch seized in the open position.

*Mk3 Golf TDi. My ex-wife gave it to me because no-one would buy it. I fixed it, trashed it, and then swapped it for a 24-pack of Speckled Hen.

The prancing stallion (Invicta, latin for unconquered) is a hangover from when the company was called Aveling and Porter, based in Rochester in Kent (Invicta is the county shield for Kent). Aveling and Porter made machines such as steam engines and road rollers, Barford of Grantham was an agricultural engineer. Not sure when the two amalgamated (without looking it up) but afterwards they made construction machines, everything from cement mixers to the very successful master pavior road rollers, graders, dump trucks (including some Rd017 I think that were very similar to Leyland badger lorries). Still kicking about now I think, Barford site dumpers are still about, and theres also a nationwide network of plant hirers and dealers called Clive Barford limited.

Thanks for the pic Scruff, nice to see.

This is from memory but the gist as I understand it is - They ended up in bed together as a result of membership of a doomed combine called Agricultural & General Engineers (AGE). That went pop in 1932 or 33 taking most members with it but with help from, I think, Ruston & Hornsby mainly, the two old firms of Aveling & Porter and Barford & Perkins of Peterborough were joined up, with Edward Barford in charge. Perkins went solo and concentrated on diesel engines while Aveling Barford were given an old wartime Ruston factory at Grantham, some pre-war Ruston steam and diesel designs intended for the far east market and the best of British luck old chap.
