I'm over in Germany in the summer and looking at hiring a car, I can get a 'mini' for £180 for 5 days (which will be a hyundai i10, because thats what they always give me) or for £215 I can get a 'Special dealers choice - or similar special car' which sounds like a way to live a bit dangerously! Do they have some sort of 80s gameshow wheel of fortune that they wheel out, maybe some dry ice, a glamorous and scantily dressed lady? Or does the work experience kid just grab the keys for whatever was returned last in the out-of-hours key dropbox and you get a Hyundai i10 anyway, but just pay over the odds for it? I mean my life is tediously dull at the best of times so I'm going to go for it anyway, but wondered if anyone else has ever lived life to the max* with such jeopardy? They just give you a Fiesta instead. If that's your idea of excitement, go nuts 😁 richardmorris and Stanky
artdjones
I've been doing some fiddling with the 205 since returning from France. The accelerator pump diaphragm was leaking, so every time the throttle was opened petrol dripped out of here :- And of course there would be a big flat. When we arrived home the new diaphragm was in the postbox. So on Monday night the swap was done. The old one wasn't looking great, and the pump chamber was full of deposits. After that there was still a running issue, but today I unplugged the HT leads and plugged them back in and it's now running smoothly and revving up properly when the accelerator is depressed. Then I reinstated a missing piece of pipe in the screen washer, so that's working. The wiper arms looked very scruffy. So I whipped them of and derusted them. Primed the bare patches. Then a nice coat of satin black. Here it is, idling away quietly in the evening sun. loserone, morrisoxide, Tickman and 8 others

The Vicar
Out to B&Q today for odds and ends and while sitting in the car park noticed this chap making a beeline for me. Turned out to be a junior sales exec from a Volvo show room across the road; he saw me pull in as he was queuing for lunch in McDonald’s came over to ask if I’d bring the 164 over to their showroom for their social media person to take a few pics. Definitely a first for me, but a lovely experience. GMcD
Holy shit balls I put some new metal into the Celica tonight. It was only a small 10cm x 10cm section but it's a start. Spent a long time faffing trying to setup and dial in the welder. Photos later once I've grind the welds down to save my blushes. wuvvum
The nut splitters I ordered were sitting on the doorstep when I got in from work, so I decided to attack the top mounting nut on the MG's rear strut. It took bloody ages because everything in the engine bay of a TF has about 2mm of clearance around it, but I got it off in the end. Can't fit the new strut yet though because I discovered that the nut is in fact M10 x 1.25mm, and the only M10 nuts I have are 1.5mm pitch. Don't think any of the local hardware places will have any fine pitch nuts, so I'm going to have to order them online. Also got the second pair of rear door hinges fitted to the Maxus - was a twat getting everything to line up, fortunately one of the neighbours wandered over to see what I was doing and I got him to hold the door in position while I fitted the top hinge - would have been even more of a bastard on my own. Door now opens and closes a lot more easily than it used to, so that's good. Drove the 206 in to work today as it hadn't had a run for a while. Weather was a bit dull this morning but was lovely by the time I left off at 5.30ish so I drove home with the roof down, which was nice. Nearest bike shop is 10 miles away but I do have the remains of a dead Honda Spacy in the back garden - I might see if there's any I can nick off there. wuvvum
And home again. Somewhat to my surprise, the old crate never missed a beat, whether it was hammering down the dual carriageway at 60+ or grinding through the bank holiday traffic in Wroxham on the way home. It still definitely needs some fine tuning by someone who knows what they're doing though, and the valve clearances on the offside cylinder need adjusting. There's also still a bit of petrol in the oil, but I'm not sure whether that's new or just because I didn't quite get all the old oil out of the engine when I changed it. It certainly isn't doing the flooding the carb, conking out and chucking petrol all over the inlet manifold that it used to do before my last fiddling session, so that's good. chadders, Wibble, Steviemillar and 17 others
