Why has it taken so long for the VIC check to be needed? Surely if it was damaged then repaired years ago it'd have been done (VIC checked) at the time?

Moog: I've got those fancy sort of flat wiper blades on my 306 and they're brilliant. Rear doors (like pretty much all Peugeot doors of that era) are odd like that. My n/s/f one used to be a right bastard but penetrating oil and grease with constant use of doors does help.

As for stuff like the rev counter then being honest I'd just leave it, I reckon you could spend a lifetime fixing niggles on Peugeots and you'd probably never have a fully operational car. My rear wiper is testament to that along with other random things at random times.

The owner who had the accident probably got paid out and kept the car (including V5).Had it repaired himself then ran it for a few years. It's only when someone else applied for a new V5 it came back as needing a vic check.

I may be wrong but that's my thoughts anyway.

Im thinking specifically of des who does the hotrods.

I went to see Dez this morning, he seems to think that he'll be able to cut and shut the old wings with my new ones for £100 each which isn't bad, I still ideally want to buy new wings so will keep a lookout, he has some nice stuff in this yard though, a few hot rods, the Lada with a Lancia twin cam and a Vanguard that he's rebuilding.

Whilst i had the cars out I took the opportunity to get a photo of them together for the first time.

I have been having thought of selling the Cortina of late as it's in the way in the back garden, costs a bit to run and it means i'll struggle for space if i saw any other little bargains but after a drive around town this afternoon and all the attention it gets I'm going to struggle to let it go.

The underseal was barely dry on the last bit of welding, but the 2CV made it to a small, local show today.

This is the closest thing I've seen to a shite E-Type. Looks superb here, but it was quite scraggy. I liked it very much.

Incredibly, it stayed dry all day while we were there. It's rained almost non-stop since we got home. Perfick!

If only you knew a friendly breakdown van driver.

Taxed 306 today. Didnt manage to get pics as was DIYing all day  Did allow me to pop out for bits!

200 miles worth.

It is a nice old bus, pulls well. I had forgotten the old skool .. no power... no power.. Tuuurbo.. runs out of puff...Smells like PO has been Veging or Ronny McDonny is stalking me ...

Found few more things

  • Some lacquer peel on passenger side
  • Rear doors both have become sticky
  • Rev counter has become intermittent
  • Windscreen wipers just discuss with water about leaving then screen
  • Shocks have seen better days
  • Brake fluid needs to be replaced
  • Brake discs are a bit juddery
  • Needs tracking
  • Rear left tyre is really low
  • Needs a radio
  • Missing standard AS 1 wheel trim!

Applied Lube to doors and they are happy. New blades ordered for windscreen. Put wanted ad for radio. Spent £4 on Wilkos floor mats FTW

Waiting to happen

  • Cambelt
  • Oil Change
  • Coolant flush
  • New air filter (cant work out how to get at it!)
  • Check tyre pressures
  • AS sticker to be applied
  • Give it a good clean and polish (perhaps even clay bar... got a year of no cars to get out of system)

Never had a Pug before but I have a feeling that this might be a keeper. Could chuck couple of hundred quid at it and would last a while longer. Does everything I need it to... and not run of the mill... still think it looks stylish.

Regarding the power delivery, its very easy to adjust the pushrod/plunger on the turbo to give you a greater spread of power through the rev range. (I haven't done it with ours, it feels quick enough)

I appear to have cured the missfire on the Alfa.  I ordered a replacement coil pack for it, as this seemed to be the most likely cause.  Unbolted the old coil pack, pulled it out and the spark plug hole was full to the brim with oil - presumably from when I spilled oil all over the engine bay.  So that would be what was causing the missfire then.

I fitted the replacement coil pack anyway, seeing as I'd forked out for it.  I've done 40 miles in the car this afternoon and it seems fine.  EML has gone out too, which is a bonus.

I also changed the plugs on the front bank of the Xedos' engine.  They were relatively easy to get to - the intercooler had to come off, but it's only an air/air job so no pissing about with coolant pipes, although the spring clips retaining the pipe from the air filter were a bit of a PITA to get off.  I got the plugs out using my Poundland dual-ended plug spanner to undo them, and my broken Halfords 16mm T-handle spanner (which no longer has its T-handle but does still have the rubber insert in the socket) to pull them out of the hole.  They did appear to have been in there for quite some time.  Sadly it's made bugger all difference to the missfire, so I'm going to have to tackle the rear bank tomorrow - which I suspect will be rather more interesting. :-?

Tomorrow some demented sloth from Yodel will be picking up a heavy parcel with my address on it... Let's hope it gets here before the weekend, so I can get some more work done and book the thing for its test next week.

I waited for the above-mentioned demented sloth until 15.00 yesterday, when I decided that my shiny new brakes simply weren't going to turn up (Yodel in 'being shite' shocker !).

As I really needed to get the 740 MoT-worthy, I decided to bodge it together with the worn-out discs from the 760, which proved to be a remarkably pain-free (albeit boring, hence no pics) process. I then adjusted the handbrake and took the thing for a test-drive, which revealed that everything was working as it should !

As Murphy's law would have predicted, seconds after I returned from the test drive, a shabby, unmarked van turned up and delivered a large, beaten-up box containing the new discs ! Bloody typical !!!

Anyway... The 740 will be booked for its test this week, and I am fairly confident* that it will pass. Then it will be the turn of the 'hairdresser special' to receive some much-needed pre-MoT attention.

Put a bid on a set of alloys on evil bay. Description is Set of peugeot alloys and tryes good condition. What can go wrong!

Positive is that revcounter works more than not. Put 20 quid dizzler in and done literally lots of.miles....amazing.... especially compared to 850

Ordered stereo online, went for one without cd or cassette player... how very now.

I taxed my 306 hatch on Friday (at a local DVLA office which is shutting in November) and actually cleaned the estate today. I also robbed the rear wiper off the Escort to put onto the totally bollocksed one on the hatch and I'll hopefully have the headlight bulb swapped over too if they're the same.

Typically for a shit, dirt cheap used car I'm getting mostly complete timewasters about the Escort, some of whom seem to want a f*cking Rolls Royce for £150, along with free delivery and me holding onto it for several years. Well, the bastard is defo getting weighed off on Thursday at the latest if not gone.

The weather held long enough for me to replace the front brakes on the AX and fit a good used drive shaft to replace the very clonky original. The callipers were partially seized so I chucked on a good used pair. All the bits were sourced via the AX forum. It seems that many AX's end up having Saxo VTR running gear chucked into them so the bog standard mechanicals go begging. Good news for shiters like me!

21447_10153078122935436_414754792_n.jpg

I ended up spilling about a litre of gearbox oil all over the inlaws drive, which they were not happy about at all. I'll have to figure out a way of getting it all up. Washing up liquid, water and a stiff brush won't touch it!

A mega big ultra THANKS must go to Vanny, who chucked a few bits my way as well, including a virtually new pair of tyres. I'm just waiting for a rear seatbelt to be delivered and then I could be looking down the barrel of an MOT, which to be fair the AX has a very good chance of passing.

Gave The Volvo a wash and polish today. It's now reached the point that it's a proper 'ten yard car', although you wouldn't think it was, going by the photo:

I'd love to get the car resprayed one day. Perhaps if I still own it in five or so years' time, I will :)

Nice one, Tim. Vanny is a top lad, always willing to help out.

My sister works for a large Fiat main dealership in Cornwall and today this little Mazda 323 came in, It belongs to a customer whose having some work done on a van but he want's to sell it, he's had it since it was 6 months old and it's only done 45000 miles, I suspect it will be cheap but she's going to ask him how much when he come back in to collect the van.

I'm off to Cornwall soon and I do like it, the trouble is do i really need another car?!.

Just checked, it's a 1071cc, I was hoping for a 1300 or 1500cc.

attachicon.gifIMG-20130802-WA0000.jpg

That's the one I papped in the car park of Sainsburys Truro. Looked an absolute honey.

Let me know if you hear any more on its sale, as I may be needing (see wanting with no real need) something cheap to blez about to work and back if the 106 fails its MOT badly and the Lancia isn't done.

Just posted a for sale thread on R-R for the Celica.

Wish me luck....... :-?

Let me know if you hear any more on its sale,

Will do, He's due back to collect his van apparently and my sisters asked the service department to ask the chap for his details when he turns up, He was talking about scrapping it so I'm only guessing but it might be very cheap.

LT - a top tip to improve relationships with driveway owners is to put cardboard or a tarp down when working on the car. I've started doing this as our driveway is so soaked in oil that I'm scared the US will invade. Cardboard is good as it's quite absorbent. It also stops you losing nuts/bolts when working on a gravel driveway.

Looks like the Escort has sold to a lad I know. If he doesn't have it I'm going to weigh it in anyhow.

Got the carb's off the 400/4 at the weekend, they're in a bit of a state. Sliders are pretty much seized up (though we've freed them a little) and the one float bowl I took off was horrible, so there's a bit to do yet.

Finished changing the pads on the wife's Pug 106, and greased the sliders on the calipers. The discs are gubbed, though - corrosion on the inner surface has caused unevenness and a pulsing brake pedal. New discs are only about £30 for the pair, but this will be its 3rd of 4th new pair in the last 50,000 miles/7 years.

Dispatch update.

New fuel and air filters plus I knocked myself out and changed the oil and filter as well! - made F-all difference to the lack of performance.

Decided to let my local friendly garage have a go, they frigged about with the pump and hey presto! Laggardly performance restored!

Brakes sorted on the Golf, so turned my attention to the 2CV.

Rusty discs, but pads aren't bad for 40,000 miles.

This is a handbrake pad. I've no idea why it's worn like that. New ones on order. Job on hold.

In other news, Disco is in for MOT at 4pm today. I'd better go and check the basics. Might well fail - it has one worn swivel - but I'm pretty confident about everything else. Still a few weeks on the MOT.

That looks like a pretty fruity setup on the 2CV for the brakes.. Is that inboard discs with some kind of weird spring loaded calipers mounted to the gearbox?

Posted

Inboard discs yes, but the levers and springs are for the handbrake mechanism. Must be said, inboard brakes are a lot easier to work on when they're at the front!

Mr_Bo11ox kindly sent me a new exhaust section to replace the blowing one on the Argenta.

Completely phailed to get the old one off myself; it required much more 'persuasion' than I could muster, so I gave the fitter at work twenty notes to sort it.  He even took it to his workshop and delivered it back.  A++++ MEKANIK WUD USE AGAIN!

In other news, Mrs_Ceri made some lovely sun-visor covers for the Beetle (not retro boho shabby chic rat look).

On the subject of DIY PHAIL, I lost the battle with the 740s flexis for a second time yesterday, stopping just short of rounding the unions off or snapping the rigid pipes. The local garage have now been commissioned to get the bugger through its MoT, and I expect them to have a delightful* time doing so.

Yesterday's exploits.  If it still exists, I'll update the Princess thread properly, but now I'm off to put the seats back in, give her a clean and screw the number plate back on that fell off.
