Congrats to Ghosty on the T5!  Sounds a cut above the other sheds viewed, at the very least.

It's been brought to my attention that I've been hiding my light under a bushel somewhat through burying my Terrible Terrible Auction Reports within the Northern Ireland Shiter Meet-Up thread. It's not just a thread for arranging meet-ups, really.

So if anyone wants a giggle at the kind of rammel that winds up at a provincial auction house in East Antrim, with appropriate photographs, long-form commentary and MS Paint bastardisations, I've now put a series of links in the original post to direct folk to the write-ups for each event so far.

This Wednesday's report has a pantomime theme. Just sayin' like.

Agreed to buy the green T5 for £1400.

The seller didn't mention in the ad bit it has new front shocks and bushes, which appear to be based on the MOT advisories!

Thanks to Bramz for going to view it for me.

Pleasure is all mine, really. The older chap who was there is a proper car nut, and genuinely quite funny/old money.

The only downside, I am literally green with envy. It's even more of a blow as it was me who had agreed to get the T5 for sale on these very pages, until FJ killed that off.

I really need to save some wedge to buy a car with methinks. A decent car.

E46 was collected this morning and regulated to the naughty corner. Tomorrow it goes to Mahmouds and he can burn the fucking cooling system for all I care.

The MG has also decided to get shot of its coolant. Because of this, I have realised that coolant in car coolant systems simply do not like me. Whenever I am around they disappear through every crevice they can find. Its happened to most of my Rover Sterlings, my BMW and now the MG ZS TD.

Time to buy an air-cooled car?

The clutch has gone south on the LDV.  Not sure exactly what's happened to it - I was changing gear a bit more enthusiastically than normal as I was trying to get past a 17-plate Sprinter which had been trundling along but suddenly took exception to being overtaken by a battered Maxus and floored it to try and stop me getting past.  It didn't work as the LDV was faster, but I now have a broken clutch so it was a hollow victory.  It's not completely broken - it will still disengage enough to allow me to come to a stop and pull away again (although it creeps slightly so I have to hold it on the handbrake), but I can't change gear without rev matching and I can't engage any gears at a standstill with the engine running.

I don't think it's air in the system as the pedal still feels firm and pumping it doesn't make any difference.  The master cylinder is mounted directly onto the pedal so I'm wondering whether something has got bent which means that the pedal doesn't have enough travel to disengage the clutch fully.  I'm hoping it's not something in the gearbox which has got bent as that would make things a whole lot more awkward.  I'm going to have to do some investigation tomorrow in daylight (such as it is these days) - pokign around by the light of my 'phone I couldn't really see much.

We can all agree on that but is there any noise on the regulatory side to address the problems with motor insurance in the UK? Maybe I'm wrong but compared to some sectors like telecoms or electricity supply there never seems to be any parliamentary oversight and the industry continues with some dodgy practices.

Yes and no: the Financial Conduct Authority recently announced an investigation into fair pricing in motor and home insurance, partly off the back of a challenge from the Competition and Markets Authority about the way that loyal customers get their prices increased each year and pay a lot more than new customers who change insurer.

This is good on the face of it - except it’s exactly what drove my insurers to stop auto-renewing my policies. Regulators aren’t always brilliant when it comes to unforeseen (but actually eminently foreseeable) consequences.

Separately, George Osborne announced limits on ambulance-chasing solicitors’ ability to push whiplash claims, but the May government later unwound that.

Generally, most insurers don’t make an underwriting profit on motor business (i.e. the value of premiums is less than the cost of claims in the same year). Some rather stupidly tried to make up for this by adding other revenue streams like getting kick-backs for referrals to claims lawyers and car hire companies. This was a great wheeze for about 5 minutes, after which it obviously just pushed up claims costs for everyone and made things much worse. This should clearly be banned.

Sum-up: yes the regulators are looking at this, but in the wrong places. Not the first time that’s happened.

...got the opportunity of a few days away from it all; helping a mate who was a live in type maintenance handyman at a 'country manor move,  since the owners have decided to mothball the place for the winter (due to large heating bill) - at the end of the tourism season, we were allowed to stay for a few days in exchange for helping him move - while cold, it was a nice interesting old place to stay for a few days - if a bit haunted, but with 65 acres to roam n explore the days were spent exploring...

Anyhow I thought it a good test for the chAvant to prove itself reliable after its initial temperamental shenanigans after I purchased it, hoping that fitting that €15 second hand lift pump was enough to prove itself 'reasonably reliable' and start 1st thing in the morning.... it did all that starting everyday n getting up n down the 300mile round trip to Co Meath  without incident n returning good diesel MPG... so I might actually replace its cracked rear tail lamp n fit a towbar to it, replace its artists paintbrush dipstick bung, with an actual proper oil dipstick etc

I was a bit worried by the Mazda during the week. I drove up a steep hill and it was jerking and nearly failed to proceed. I stopped at the top for a bit to find out what was happening. the engine was running sweetly with no sign of problems , so carried on. Got back up to 90-100 kph and it seemed to be momentarily losing drive (auto trans) and proceeding in a series of jerks making progress very unpleasant. It actually seemed to be something like a gearbox solenoid not working randomly. At low speeds around 50 kph all was well and it seemed to only happen in 3rd and o/drive. BUT at one place I had to stop . Pulling away there was a eureka moment, the engine lost 1 or 2 cylinders for a few seconds. So tried an Italian tune-up, 5000 + rpm for a bit. The car is now running sweetly with no signs of a problem, even on the same steep hill.

Another day of fixing a car in the lashing rain.

Mrs was out for coffee, and I was investigating the terrible brakes on her Roomster.

Rear wheel cylinders are leaking, thankfully the local factors have a pair in stock.

Her mate dropped her back from coffee in her brand new i20, and I couldn't help thinking having something like that for the Mrs to run around in wouldn't be a bad idea - bar regular servicing it would be worry free motoring for a few years anyway

Gear linkage? They are piss weak on those things.

Nope, defo clutch - all the gears go in lovely with the engine off.  Plus the clutch pedal feels "different".

Balls...

is this the problem where the connectors on the big wires in the fuse box overheat and loosen off ?

I had similar years ago with my Cortina, it was something like the finger things on the cover plate had gone floppy/release bearing punching through.

I wasn't feeling well so cancelled the babysitter for tomorrow night as we were meant to be going out to see the Wedding Present in Bradford at the Underground.

I'm feeling a bit better but the missus is now doing something else (plus we obviously have no babysitter) so if anyone wants them i can give them the tickets.

PM me if you're interested.

Battery kaput?

all the stickers will be draining it overnight, OE batteries just aren't specced to handle that kind of load

The Mercedes is still in the paint shop. They’re running late apparently and it will be another week. Or something nasty has happened they need to fix without telling me.

Anyway, I’ve been out in the 2cv and the indicator has developed a fault. Works fine, ie flashes which cancel when required, but the switch stays live. Permanent green bulb showing on the dash - until I tap the relay canister and it extinguishes. I’ve tightened the spade terminals and it still does it. I’m assuming it’s a sticky internal connection but as I don’t want a burnt out relay ( or car) I’ve ordered a new one. I know, high drama time!

I really needed a hot shower after walking 15 miles in the driving rain, but the water heater on the Talbot kept clicking off after 10 seconds. I decided to take it apart, and it's surprisingly basic.

Luckily just taking it apart and putting it back together sorted it out (I reckon the earth terminal was a bit crusty)

There's just some flames on the side of the van and that's how it works. Brilliant.

Half an hour later the water was warm and I had as good of a shower as someone can while in a space not much bigger than a filing cabinet.

Fleet update as of today. Not pictured are the eight series Land Rovers in the other shed, which I can't even get into.

Have also discovered all my old pics of the stuff my dad used to have (all Land Rovers obv). Will put up a thread in due course.

That. LRs suffered it too so with LDV's heritage...

Try to park with that side down wind if you can. Some of the early versions of those heaters had warnings about not using them with a strongish wind blowing into the vent as the fumes end up inside the van.

Woahh m8...

That 'bombay bar b q' out the side of the van.. !!

I think our 'own' Sentinel won't be as hot rock as that when loaded with coal and jogging along.

Proper 'child-proof' when on de olidays, eh?

Not sure where to put this, but here goes.

My wife passed away this morning.

Me and my 2 sons have been at the Hospital since last Tuesday 24 hours a day on 8 to 10 hour shifts depending.

There were 2 of us there at time of death, it was very peaceful.

Possibly a post mortem due to events leading up to, and unsure of, actual reason for death.

Am preparing an eulogy, here's the last line.

'She was a strong principled woman, the best wife and mother anyone could wish for'.

I'm off to blubber now, thanks for your support.

Very sorry to hear that Mally.

At least you could all be there with her.
