Insurance query...

Anyone come up against this?

Renewal for Porsche £236 so not the end of the world but started to shop around a bit as you do.

Neither Direct Line or LV would quote comprehensive 'because its over 25 years old'

Could only offer third party only!

Curiously the Scirocco is also 27 and insured comp with Direct Line, but that's because it's a renewal.

Bizzarro.

Cost for me to insure the J-reg BX16v, £650. Cost to insure £8ks worth of 55 plate Discovery 3, £700.

Given the damage i could do with the Disco compared to the lack of damage the BX would do, how in god's name does that work out?

Barefoot, LV are just odd. The things they will ensure has been getting worse for years. They used to insure anything while they where still Liverpool Victoria, modified, off road you name, they would cover it. These days i think i'll have to buy a Focus if i want them to insure me! They won't insure the cat because i dont know what day it was born ffs.

It started with European breakdown cover - the mainstream guys stopped covering anything over as little as eight years old. Guess insurance is going the same way. Good job there's a whole world of classic insurance specialists out there! My guess is that anything that doesn't fit into the 'send to stupidly expensive bodyshop, buy stupidly expensive body panels from manufacturer' remit is considered a pain in the arse and not worth bothering with.

EDIT - Vanny, why are you paying so much for the Valver?! I reckon you'd be under £300 on a classic policy. It's old enough.

I finally got to drive this little Smart after the brakes finally gave up their battle to cling onto the rear discs.

This one's a 3 pot diesel as used in the Merc A-Class 150 diesels, which gives it a bit of a weird sound but it goes alright (my one has maximum powa 95bhp motor). Although the ForFour's closely based on the Mitsubishi Colt the Smart has all plastic doors, bonnet, wings and bumpers meaning it's very light. My one also has a full glass roof, which is a pretty cool feature as the big windscreen stretches right up into the roof.

Driving wise it's actually pretty good for a small car. It's comfy and it'll bomb along at illegal speeds no bother and doesn't have any problem over taking stuff on a-roads. It also handles pretty well although the electric power steering can have a bit of a weird feeling sometimes. It also seems to be geared really oddly as in there's a big leap between 2nd-3rd. I guess this is an attempt to keep it nippy around town but not revving it's nuts off on longer drives. I slung £15's worth of diesel in it and did 70 miles and still seem to have roughly half of this left, which I recon means 50+mpg.

They still seem to hold their values and my ones got a years mot after it was accidently mot'd last week, 6 months tax and just had a full service and new brakes so I'm hoping it'll sell okay so I can re-use the money to either revive my languishing SD1 or buy something interesting.

It's got a normal 5 speed manual gearbox, which is a massive head start on the smaller Smarts. They're pretty nice inside too and don't feel as cheap inside like some of the earlier for two or roadsters.

Hi Guys, and girls? lol havent posted for a while, had the whole getting ditched for someone else shit to get over,2 years and a ring all for nothing....

In more exiting news im now shiteing again :-) I have managed to get hold of a 1998 Reliant Robin LX,one owner from new,and 12k on the clock, back of the net!

Pics to come,it is suffering from the biggest case of laquer peel i have ever seen, virtually the whole of the roof and bonnet area, which is right annoying as the sides and back are brilliant!im going to experiment with relaquering it,just for the hell of it.

Yo, welcome back Dan.  A Reliant with eczema sounds just the shitey ticket for helping to move on from personal loss - go for it man. Pics required.

Those Smart ForFour things. I've tried a Brabus one of those. It went quite well, but in my hands only averaged 22 mpg around town...

It had the kind of chunky ride that a BMW 3 on runflats would be proud of.

Crap ride? That's me out then.

Frustration is the main theme of my fleet. The BX is still awaiting a service, which requires me to buy an new oil filter wrench. The Disco is away for its timing belt job, but that hasn't been started yet. After two days. The Merc is still not sold. The 2CV is ok though. Due to Merc sale fail, I do not own a knackered Ambassador. The Ferrero Rocher order has been cancelled.

I spent some time on the Saab tonight. The roof was only half going up, which I found was one half of cover not setting a switch. I bent the switch up, which made it engage and the roof closed but then didn't disengage properly, tried to go down and snapped one of flaps off the cover. It'll glue back on. Anyway I know the roof pretty much works and I think a lot of the problems will be resolved when I replace the shear pin in the cover uj. Bloody hell these roofs are complex.

I also started to knock out the dents in the drivers door after removing loads of previous inch thick filler. Its much better but I think I'm going to tack metal strips on and use these to pull some of the dents out then reapply glen miller.

That Civic is ace Trig. I was thinking with that and the Alto you must be compensating for having such a large penis but then I remembered the Cortina so you are probably about average.

And just seen our post Skattrd. The next car is already here (and has been for a while). I need to get the GT6 sorted to release finds for the Imp but if anything interesting that we can tart up and sell on for a good profit - whilst having the joy of using it in the meantime - turns up then hell I will give it a punt.

New (to me) standard leather steering wheel arrived for the Golf today.  These normally go for £50-70 on eBay (they're shared with the Mk2 Golf GTi and the Corrado) and I'm too mean to bid that high, so was rather surprised to win this one for a tenner plus postage.

It's in reasonable nick, certainly good for the money and miles better than the original, which is badly ripped and has been eaten by moss - but would benefit from a bit of refurb though.

Anyone recommend a leather restoring gunk suitable for steering wheels?

My Focus is disgracing itself as usual - after spending a few quid on it, it's still driving rather crap, with added blue smoke and a binding rear brake. The M.o.T is up on July 7th and the tax is out the end of the month so I predict some weighbridge action very soon.

Anyone got a ultra-cheap (sub £500) medium-sized car with a bit of tax and test going? I can go a fair way from base (Norfolk) so distance ain't an issue...

Blimey,  I've got one of these in the shed - I took it off and put a plastic one on cos it smelled, it's actually in pretty good nick.

I'd only kept it to put on my van when it gets painted, might avoid covering it in overspray now!

Went to the Renishaw Hall show and was allowed in!  Better yet, I got to park within spitting distance of the big house rather than being stuffed under a tree in the back field.  Only problem is that I appear to have taken 400 photographs and it's taken me an absolute age going through them all.  There was such a variety of cars and bikes on show I barely knew where to start so I just sort of went a bit trigger-happy.

The Princess didn't ruffle as many feathers as it attracted admiring remarks.  Many comments about how they were rubbish but supremely comfortable and practically everyone knew someone who had one, or had been forced to own one as a company car.  On the whole, it was a car remembered with fondness by many and more so for mine looking just how everyone remembered them back in the day.  I feel quite proud to have put so many smiles on so many faces with my shonky old wedge.

I'll post pictures eventually, but not all 400 hundred of them, that would be mean.  How the hell did I get up to 400 pictures?  Need to learn some self control.

See, it just goes to show that if you hang on to shit long enough it really does come into value one day.

Poorboys Leather Conditioner is decent, but it needs a few coats before it starts to work.

Eeerm, you know what I mean.

Thanks Wat.  Is shoe polish a bad idea, then?

Today i learnt that when driving a Reliant down a single track country road, and some posh horsey blonde in a rangerover is coming the other way, oblivious to anything going on,that its great fun to shout at her as she stops dead in the road, that i havent got reverse gear, and to make her reverse all the way back to let me past :-)
