The new news 24 thread

I’ve gone to Manchester for work. I had bold ideas of taking the BX for the drive up from Newhaven:

but I pussied out as I’ve not taxed it yet.

I swapped the boxes over at home and took the insight instead, and saw a Honda friend en route:

As is obligatory for work trips, I’m now completely lashed up from a mixture of company hospitality and the hotel bar.

As I retire to bed, I have noticed that my room is directly above my car, which provides some strange sort of reassurance 😅

I fear my Rover 200 may not be long for this world. A scruffy R8 is still nearly worthless (great if you're buying, less great if you're potentially selling), with only the best examples being picked up by enthusiasts. Wouldn't be an issue, except its high bite point has now turned into clutch slippage, and its coolant tank now looks like this:

20230209_141615.thumb.jpg.d9f998baa36f3887c4298ccb0f51192b.jpg

It would seem the Honda D series units may not be entirely immune from the shenanigans one usually associate with Rover's K series. I'll try a compression test tomorrow, but with potential engine work and clutch replacement on a car which will still be in the sub £500 category even when they're done... I'm not sure it's worth it. I absolutely hate scrapping things, but I guess at some point we have to admit we can't save them all.

Didn't get round to flushing the coolant on this, but 100 miles later the situation has... deteriorated.

Yeeeeeah, that's looking pretty mullered. Arse.

This must have come as a bit of a surprise when you're driving along and suddenly you're heading in two directions at once.

The offside wheel appears to have gone way past normal steering angle. Like the suspension has detached itself from the car. There didn't appear to be any damage anywhere  else on the car so it just looks like catastrophic suspension failure which is not something you'd expect on a seven year old car.

Oh dear... I do hope that brilliant* idea bandied around- the two years MOT does not come to fruition...

That's a popped bottom ball joint if I've ever seen one

The horrific caked on red brake dust is probably a good indication about how well it's been looked after

⬆️ High mileage usage on cheap shitty Eicher pads that is

The Germans seem to manage it ok.

It would be interesting to find out if the TüV test** is more thorough to make up for this.

I'll find out and report back.

Well this is what I have found on a cursory check. Seems a lot more documentation is required.

One might reasonably believe these checks to be more strict on account of the two-yearly intervals and the fact that a vehicle might conceivably be driven on a deregulated Autobahn.

My rediscovered enthusiasm for car stuff has continued now that spring has sprung.

Bought a cheapo dual action polisher from Argos and set to work on the Lexus. I used this Auto Finesse "One Step" Compound as it seemed reasonably straightforward. I used the Bilt Hamber Double Speed wax on it, it's a great product and a tin will probably last you years.

This is the only crap photo I have, but I'm happy with the results. It looks very smart indeed.

My parents have put their tourer caravan on a seasonal pitch on the Solway Coast this year so we took a run down over the Easter Weekend for a few nights. Fabia was the steed of choice.

Some scrap in Silloth. We also had a look round the Silloth Motorcycle Museum. It's just basically the bottom of someone's house but there was some really interesting stuff. Free entry but well worth a small donation.

Spied a proud Corsa B owner in Maryport.

On  the way up the road we nipped in to the Leadhills Railway and then on Easter Monday the Fabia took us to the Doon Valley Railway running day for a steam train ride and then onwards to Girvan for Ice Cream.

A big weekend for the Fabia. I filled it up on Saturday there and it had done 574.2 miles and used 38 litres of fuel for a frankly obscene 68.69mpg.

What a car.

Another photo heavy update here.

I had managed to maintain my ideal fleet size of 3 cars for a couple of months, a manageable amount for me, probably the most I can feasibly keep on top of. Time to get another then.

In came the ex @Mally Ford Street Ka. @sdkrc collected it and enjoyed it for a couple of days before it came my way.

After the satisfying cleaning/polishing jobs on the Fabia and Lexus I was motivated to crack on with the Ka. First order of business was to remove the hard top. We're coming into some better weather and I'd like to get a bit of use out it with the top down. This left us thusly;

IMG20230410195019.thumb.jpg.bca111c36bd72068cf795f6adc56301c.jpg

It was by no means filthy, after a good wash it was obviously a pretty straight car and looked like it would come up nicely. I removed the stylish* reflective strips that had been stuck to the edges of the bonnet and bootlid. This is how the paint looked after a thorough wash;

IMG20230412201753.thumb.jpg.a2d395a34177e5749de2d141a3e14374.jpg

Lots of swirls and shallow scratches. The DA polisher was deployed all over. I even done a professional* job and masked off the black plastics as I went. It got a coat of wax afterwards. After finishing the exterior I set about the interior.

Seats were easily enough removed. Just two bolts at the front, three at the back and a single electrical connection for the very posh heated seats. Carpets hoovered and then cleaned with a drill brush. Always freshens a car interior up. It all got a general scrub with a brush and some all purpose cleaner stuff.

IMG20230416175251.thumb.jpg.e54296e99985d30fa15ac16b659cd88e.jpg

The interior door handle on the drivers side had broke when Sam was bringing it up the road. Upon inspection it was pulling the full cable, not just the inner. This was due to a burst clip in the handle which holds the outer sheathing of the cable in place. A strategically deployed jubilee clip stopped it being able to pull the outer into the handle and now the door opens like it should.

IMG20230418170323.thumb.jpg.e06d9a64fc151f9c8d6a82ccbe1efd9f.jpg

While in there I had a look at the inop door speaker, done a two way swap and both speakers seem fine so must be a broken wire somewhere. Will investigate later.

The passenger seatbelt wasn't retracting properly. Had a go at the trick of cleaning it in a bucket with some laundry detergent in it. Also some silicone spray. Neither worked so I've ordered a replacement one for £15 from eBay.

IMG20230418123752.thumb.jpg.8dd33098f29052547a544c94887d81d1.jpg

The flap that separates the roof from the boot was loose, I deployed some of the plastic trim clips I got in a big set from Lidl last year for a surprisingly factory looking repair.

IMG20230418183926.thumb.jpg.00888c60f1d34f3cb7e05a1ae4f6e180.jpg

Interior all went back together and I reattached the rear Ford badge which fell out during some rigorous polishing. Here we have the finished article;

IMG20230418192417.thumb.jpg.8060b86fefc8f2693d38a64712e7bc44.jpg

Really happy with how it's turned out. It's a very honest little car,  just as Mally's ad. Everything has tidied up really easily. Hopefully the nice weather keeps up and I can get out in it with the roof down!

The main difference will be the personal level of scrutiny from the tester, who is probably more likely to be a little stricter in Germany than here in the UK. Once again a mentality thing. Obviously depends on what garage you go to.

Also fun fact, despite being called TÜV inspection TÜV is really just the company responsible for carrying out those inspections in certain regions of Germany. In the Eastern parts it's mainly the Dekra for example. Officially the inspection is called Hauptuntersuchung (HU) and Abgasuntersuchung (AU), so main inspection and emissions inspection.

Tape on the bonnet and boot? You have better eyes than me. I only washed it once in 6 months though.

Have you rubbed the hole in the front bumper out that still gives my D in L nightmares?

It's a very nice car that was compatible with my needs at time of purchase.

Hope it serves you well.

I've not done a lot with the hole in the bumper. I used some boiling water on it to try and push it out a bit, managed to get it a bit flatter and reckon it could be fixed* with a bit of fibreglass and filler if you took it off and done it form behind. There is however someone on in Maryport selling a front bumper on eBay, might be a more sensible choice.

Thanks Mally, I'm really chuffed with it. I'll enjoy it for a bit and it will probably be advertised here and stay in the fold whenever I do decide to move it on.

I'd say to try a better branded one, such as Bosch.

I owe you a pint good sir.

Bosch sensor arrived today, removed the Amazon ‘Frankberg’ sensor and swapped it for the Bosch one, all warnings gone, didn’t even have to clear the codes. (I did clear them to get rid of the historic code anyway though)

No warnings, TC/ABS/runflat warning all working as it should again.

"Frankburg" 🤣 FFS 😂 - we've got a daft tyre names thread, maybe we need a daft chinesium car part names thread :)

I guess they must make their money churning out this pure shit on the basis that a proportion of people simple won't bother asking for their money back due to the relative low cost.

Honestly, no bother. Glad to help :)

I got a black bumper offered at £100, which I knew I'd never see back.

Someone on here told me you can just swap the centre section, and they probably had one but I never followed it up.

I could run through my messages but I'm not sure if it was a pm, or just a comment on one of my posts.

I'm not sentimental about cars, I've crashed them for 55 years. Feel free to do what you like.

It's a nice thing in the sunshine though.

Edit, and surprisingly snug in Winter.
